1989 - Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe weather from North Dakota to Indiana. Thunderstorms in North Dakota produced tennis ball size hail at Carson. Back in the day when the NWS only had the zone forecasts, they would always say “ cooler near Lake Huron” over here in the spring and Summer when needed. However, I don’t ever recall a forecast that said warmer near Lake Huron in the Fall or Winter. There are a lot of times especially in the Fall when there could be gale force winds blowing at the shore with a temperature of 50F while it’s in the 30s with frost and calm winds 20 miles inland. Maybe they just figured the average person didn’t care about that? Just my thought for the day.

1863: Unseasonably cool temperatures are felt across the state. Frost is reported in the Twin Cities area.

1951 - The Kaw River flood occurred. The month of June that year was the wettest of record for the state of Kansas, and during the four days preceding the flood much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri received more than ten inches of rain. Flooding in the Midwest claimed 41 lives, left 200 thousand persons homeless, and caused a billion dollars property damage. Kansas City was hardest hit. 1980 - Lightning struck a large broiler house in Branford, FL, and the ensuing fire broiled 11,000 nearly ready broilers. Firemen were able to save a few thousand chickens, however. (The Weather Channel)
1987 - Cool air invaded the High Plains Region. Eight cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Sheridan, WY, with a reading of 37 degrees. Thunderstorms developing along the cold front in the central U.S. produced 6.5 inches of rain at Fort Dodge, IA, and 2.5 inches in one hour at St. Joseph MO. (The National Weather Summary)
1988 - Evening thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Dakotas, including baseball size hail at Aberdeen, SD, and softball size hail near Fullerton, ND. Thunderstorms produced heavy rain in Arkansas and northeastern Texas, with 6.59 inches reported at Mesquite, TX, in just an hour and fifteen minutes. 1989 - Early morning thunderstorms over eastern Kansas deluged McFarland with more than six inches of rain. Afternoon thunderstorms in Wyoming produced up to eighteen inches of dime size hail near Rock Springs, along with torrential rains, and a three foot high wall of mud and water swept into the town causing more than 1.5 million dollars damage. Evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in Oklahoma and Arkansas, deluging Dardanelle, AR, with 3.50 inches of rain in less than twenty minutes.  The NBM shows WFO MQT
reaching 99 degrees, which would place today in a 4-way tie for the
all-time record (period of record since 1961). If downsloping can
get the shoreline to 100 degrees, it will be only the 27th time 100
degrees has been recorded in the City of Marquette since the
1860s (including times with less reliable instrumentation and
siting). The Ironwood WWTP site has not recorded a 100 degree
temperature since the 1940s, while the Iron Mountain WWTP site
has only reached 100 3 times since the 1940s (the IMT ASOS has
never recorded 100 degrees F since it was installed in 1996).
All of this to say, the level of heat today will likely (50+%)
be on the level that most Yoopers would have to leave the UP to
experience in their lifetimes. Overnight lows tonight only look
to fall to the low to mid 70s, providing little relief for those
without air conditioning.

1933: An intense heat wave affects Grand Marais with a high of 90, extremely rare for that location. Most of Minnesota would exceed 100 degrees on this date.

 

1890: A tornado hits Lake Gervais north of St. Paul. People rush from St. Paul to help victims and look for souvenirs. One reporter notes that 'nearly everyone who returned from the disaster last evening came laden with momentoes (sic) denoting the cyclone's fury.'

1895 - A tornado struck Cherry Hill in New Jersey causing fifty thousand dollars damage. It also descended into the Harlem and Woodhaven areas of New York City killing one person, and finally ended as a waterspout in Jamaica Bay. (David Ludlum)
1975 - Dover, DE, was deluged with 8.50 inches of rain to establish a 24 hour record for the state. (The Weather Channel)
1977 - Lightning struck a key electrical transmission line in Westchester County of southeastern New York State plunging New York City into darkness. (David Ludlum)
1980 - Afternoon highs of 108 degrees at Memphis, TN, 108 degrees at Macon, GA, and 105 degrees at Atlanta, GA, established all-time records for those three cities. The high of 110 degrees at Newington, GA, was just two degrees shy of the state record. (The Weather Channel)
1987 - Unseasonably cool weather prevailed across the Midwest. Ten cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Casper, WY, with a reading of 39 degrees. 1988 - There were just three reports of severe weather across the country, and just one record high temperature reported. Thunderstorms brought much needed rains to the Tennessee Valley area, producing nine inches at Senatobia, MS. (The National Weather Summary)
1989 - A thunderstorm at Albany, GA, produced 1.40 inches of rain in forty minutes, along with wind gusts to 82 mph. Afternoon highs of 98 degrees at Corpus Christi, TX, 110 degrees at Tucson, AZ, and 114 degrees at Phoenix, AZ, equalled records for the date. Yeah, sure! Whether it's 97 or 100 it's going to be crazy hot, might as well set a record.  I'm pretty much down for any extreme type of weather.

I have frozen watermelon and ice water for the chickens, and frozen baby carrots for my bunnies to munch on.  Hopefully that will keep them from getting too hot this afternoon.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness being closed to all visitors for only the 2nd time ever due to extreme fire behavior and danger. Love that area so much, hope they get some storms soon.
