WxKnurd
About to head back to Montana and we finally had our first snow in Billings, overperformer and ended up with 8” or so when they were calling for 4-5”. Been nice to have some cold these past few days here in the foothills at my parents, prepping me for heading back to the first cold snap of the year out there!

Evaporative cooling . The Model's tend to miss it many times.
Tyler Penland
Can I order a repeat of this pattern in January? Drop 3-4º off the column and we'd have ourselves a couple nice storms on the way. Liking what the GFS is showing for late next week. Hoping the backside of the Tue system produces up high so I can get out and snow hike on Wednesday. 2
Met1985
Down to 31 now. That line in Eastern TN if holds together could bring us some light snow.

Maggie Valley Steve Posted yesterday at 11:01 AM Share Posted yesterday at 11:01 AM GSP mentioned Winter Weather Advisory coming either later this afternoon or tomorrow morning for all of the Mountain areas including the SW Mountains for tomorrow night. Looks like snow changing to freezing rain event. They are also mentioning the next event would be Thursday night into Friday with snow likely for all areas including Asheville/Hendersonville before changing to sleet/freezing rain. The upcoming medium range continues to advertise a fast progressive pattern with moisture every day or two into next week.

In fact, I still speak of a walk in the snow, ice, or just bone numbing cold, as a "Jebwalk"., as do some on this board...my two now adult children know this term, and like to check in on me when winter weather is present, and ask if a Jebwalk is on the agenda. In any event, having just moved from Souhtport, NC, I have enjoyed the "real" fall weather in Sep and Oct this year, and am now looking forward to "real" winter weather this winter. I am a bit too far east for NWFS, but occasionally I hope to see flizzards break containment...and otherwise looking fowward to potential winter storms that might bring accumulating snow to this elevation... Welcome and thanks for your service! It's a good crew here. My daughter lives in Southport and I'm sure you can chat about the crab cakes at Provisions...anyway welcome aboard. Welcome! Sounds like you're near the Bat Cave / Bearwallow Mountain area. Bearwallow has been known for some good winter weather from time to time. Funny you mentioned the Mid-Atlantic forum, that was my first introduction to AmericanWx as well. Spent the 2010 Snowmageddon/Snowpocalypse blizzards in the DMV when I was in the Navy. Fun times! Welcome to the mountains, hopefully you brought the winter weather mojo with you!

BlueRidge...yes, I am right next to BW Mtn..the peak is about 1.5 mile hike/700 ft up from my house. I have mined the Bearwallow Econet station for much data to prepare for winters here. Elsewhere, I was there in Montclair VA (P William Co) for that amazing winter of 2010-11. I think I totaled up approximtly 85" of snow that winter. I worked with several USN METOC officers as part of Joint ops while on AD, and then while working as GS civ service employee for Dept of AF Weather. Traveled to both Monterey (NPS) adn Stennis during that time, among other trips

Glad to have you here WxHawk - Southport is an interesting place with a lot of history...and good seafood! But I am happy to be out of the heat and humidity - much prefer the full 4 seasons and potential winter precip here in the NC Mtns.

I have family that live on Bearwallow, I used to ride my four wheeler through GH when it was a cow farm. Of course that was years ago! I wasn't far from Montclair back then, I was in PG County, living on Andrews AFB. We were at 80-90" as well. Best winter I've ever lived through!

Maggie Valley Steve
It's going to be a close call here in Haywood County overnight. I see GSP has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Buncombe and Henderson Counties now. Frankly the models are struggling beyond 24 to 48 hours. Until they settle down, it's hard to put much faith in the medium and longer range guidance.
chris21
We actually had a good amount of ice up here Sunday night. Interesting in that it coated everything including the road and my entire yard! I'm sure we will get slammed again tonight. Cold air gets trapped in my high valley because it’s surrounded on all sides by high peaks. Should have some upslope snow showers and a refreeze tomorrow afternoon up here also. Def winter!
