I think it kind of dives south a bit overnight.

But clearly it's not coming over us.

1953 and 1955 are absolutely wild because they each had two such periods.  Don the second period in 1953 could be extended into early September when it peaked at 102.....

1953 ran from 8/26 through 9/3. I've added the updated chart.

JFK's extreme heat events:

image.png.f43105e219159d51c2c2605b2fa18910.png

1966 and 2010 were both at 100 or above (2010 a little hotter than NYC, 1966, was significantly hotter than NYC.)  Some of those other periods were really long, an 8 day heatwave in 2013 which peaked at 100 (hotter than NYC) 2006 had a 7 day heatwave that I don't even remember that peaked at 99 wow. 1993's 7 day heatwave that peaked at 101 I remember well and also 1999's 5 day heatwave that peaked at 102. And 1983's 6 day heatwave that peaked at 100 which was our previous hottest summer prior to 2010.

Thanks Tony, do you have anything from the 6 day heatwave at JFK in 1948 that peaked at 101?

1948 was when their period of record began.

The 1948 event would have been shortened to August 26-28, as there were three consecutive 100° highs.

Yes that was an absolutely amazing heatwave that resembled 1993 in some respects, three straight days of 100+ at NYC and 2 straight days of 100+ at JFK.

JFK's recorded history also began in 1948 as Idlewild.

53 was drier (very dry)/ the heat was most pronounced in late August in September.

Despite the expected extreme heat, it is possible that New York City's Central Park will fall short of the criteria needed to qualify as an extreme heat event (Clarke et al., 2014 Methodology). To get there, there would need to be at least 3 97° highs, every high during the period would need to be 90° or above, and the average high during the period would need to be 97° or above.

Below is a list of such events:

image.png.f95cd008b7e2cd050d0c169364ca8174.png

1953, 1977 and 1993 all stand out for being 8-9 days in length.

1977 being the most intense out of those and also the longest.

A derecho and WW3 on the same day. What are the odds?

well, some have said that nuclear testing led to some of those extreme heatwaves in the 40s and 50s (1944, 1948, 1949, 1953, 1955)..... there's no real proof of that though and if that's true, what led to the extreme heat in 1966? A drier climate is the likely cause for all of these.
