This should be the Philly areas wikipedia entry for an 80's winter:

Ample cold enough to snow with near or below normal temperatures

Cold dry stretches punctuated by cutters or storms off the Carolina or Virginia coast that rarely hugged the coast north

Monthly snowfall

December 2"

January 8"

February 3"

March 4"

Winter average 17"

Biggest storm of the winter would be 4-6"

Thankfully clippers happened more often back then or those winters would have averaged 8"

That is what I think of as an 80's winter when all of 1987 and the blizzard of 1983 is removed

It goes significantly lower... though the December and Feb numbers from the current period would go down significantly if you removed Dec 09 and Feb 10.

Let's not do the 90's minus 94 and 96. The numbers would be similar though temperatures a good 3F warmer...I might throw up

The true snow drought was March 1983-February 1992... check out these horrible averages:

Nov - 0.7

Dec - 1.6

Jan - 6.8

Feb - 4.4

Mar - 2.1

Apr - 0.4

Total - 16.0

Don't remind me.  Lol.

Those were my prime childhood and teen years.  Might as well have lived in Cape May then and up north the past 20 years, instead of the opposite.  I was too young to really enjoy those winters of the late 70s.  I remember them, but was just 5 or 6 years old.  After 1978's blizzard, my friends and I made caves in the snow drifts.

For me those years were ages 2-11.  I fortunately got to enjoy 93, 94, 96 during my teens.  I'm sure that plays a role as to why I'm in this field.

Smells like snow.

Even if we only get an inch or so it will feel like winter all week. Some years we don't even get that down here. Hideous 97-98, 01-02, 11-12 to name the most recent winters.

For those three winters I TOTALED 7.7". Yuk! I know we weren't alone in those snow drought winters, but...As you said. the rest of this week will feel, and look, like winter.
