Yesterday started out partly cloudy in the 80's and went to overcast by 4pm with rain visible falling in the mountains. Not a drop here. As long as 850mb temps can support it, you really don't need a SW wind. 850's are around 16C-17C Wednesday, you would want them a little warmer if you want widespread 90's. You need an offshore wind component and warm temperatures aloft. Some of our best heat waves have come with northwest winds at 10m and 850mb temperatures over 20 C. I guess if you go from AC to AC and have a pool in the backyard it's easy. Either that or people really like to stay indoors when we have the most available daylight of the year. The 4 km NAM gets NYC to 90 degrees: We could hit 90 Wednesday, but there are a few too many ways we could fall just short--winds a little too southerly, clouds and possible thunderstorms.
