The light winds today make me think ORD will not hit 104+...it's begging for a lake breeze to form. The question is around timing...does it happen by 1 PM, or 3 PM?

A very slow moving lake breeze has already formed...Shows up well on OBS and radar.

Seems likely that it won't make it to ORD until after 1PM...and by then it might not even matter given high temps the past two days have occured before 2PM.

At this point I'd probably be more concerned about the higher dews slowing the heating at ORD than the lake breeze. You almost wonder if tomorrow has a chance to outperform today (especially if the front slows just a hair more) as models have somewhat lower dews and the start should be at least as warm as this morning.

The NAM has had tomorrow being warmer than today for several runs now for parts of northern IL. With temps into the mid 100's by 18z tomorrow.

I could easily see ORD and DTW reaching their highest temps tomorrow. We will be very warm in the morning, so temps could approach upper 90s to around 100 by 11AM across many areas, and great mixing ahead of the front should allow for the highest temps seen during this heatwave. 105 for ORD and 104 for DTW could very well be obtainable.

Days at ORD (since 1959) with a daily mean temp of 90.0 or higher:

1. 07/13/1995: 92.5 (high 104, low 81)

1. 07/06/2012: 92.5 (high 103, low 82)

3. 07/14/1995: 91.5 (high 100, low 83)

4. 07/05/2012: 91.0 (high 103, low 79)

5. 07/04/2012: 90.5 (high 102, low 79)

6. 07/15/1980: 90.0 (high 98, low 82)

6. 07/24/2005: 90.0 (high 102, low 78)

Tomorrow will probably join this short list too...

ORD is up to 100...which breaks the record for the date (99 - 1988). This is 2F behind yesterday at this time.

This is the 4th 100+ day this year, which makes 2012 tied with 1934, 1947 and 1953 for 2nd most 100+ days in a year on record (Record: 7 - 1988).

This is also the 3rd consecutive 100+ day, which ties for the most consecutive on record with 7/3-5/1911 and 8/4-6/1947.

Edit: Intra-hour 101 so far.

lake breeze looks like it's at the Edens split...ORD might have another hour

The lake breeze boundary looks like it barely moved in the past hour.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to check again I guess. Didn't seem like it was moving very fast.

Lake breeze has only moved 3.9 miles since 10:15AM.

The pace has stayed consistent, so it likely won't make it to ORD until after 2PM at the earliest.
