It was nice having some snow, now it's all rain and drizzle here. Looks like after a couple days of cold, we are going to have a "January thaw" possibly into the middle of Jan as the AO goes back positive.

Yes not looking real good long range. But a break was expected I believe. Hopefully we come back strong the back half of the month as this is the meat of our winter. So far only 1.5 inches here this winter so not any better than last winter yet. Would hate to see back-to-back duds.

Happy New Year to all!!! It is pretty slick out there this morning and it looks like flurries and freezing drizzle are the order of the morning. Hope we all get a nice snow at some point during this winter! :)

Happy New Year to you and everyone else on here as well. We had some light snow flurries here late last night and some freezing drizzle, the roads are a mess!

Drought situation getting pretty bad in Norman now. Lake Thunderbird is 7.5 feet below normal and is soon expected to reach record levels.

OKLAHOMA CITY -
Experts say Lake Thunderbird will hit a record low next month and that has Oklahoma's third largest city scrambling to find ways to keep water running.
One option for Norman includes purchasing water from Oklahoma City. OKC officials say their city is battling its own water issues, but they also say it is possible to provide Norman with water.
Supplying Norman with water depends how much Norman will need, according to Oklahoma City public works director Debbie Ragan. Lake Hefner in northwest Oklahoma City and most lakes across the metro are low, but none of the lakes are quite as bad at Lake Thunderbird.
"No one living can ever remember Lake Thunderbird getting this bad," city manager Mark Edwards of Del City said.
Lake Thunderbird serves residents in Norman, Midwest City and Del City. The tri-city area is home to nearly 200,000 people. Midwest City and Del City also use deep water wells. Norman does not use wells.
"We hadn't had to ration, so we're in good shape," city manager Guy Henson of Midwest City said.
Henson's counterpart in Del City says he is experiencing a similar situation.

"With the water wells and everything we've got in place, we will be fine," Edwards said. "It's Norman that's got [its] back up against the wall."
Norman survives entirely off of Lake Thunderbird and Thunderbird needs life support.
"Once you get out of the conservation pool, you're in pretty dire straits," Norman mayor Cindy Rosenthal said. "It's a very serious situation."
Oklahoma City has a contract with Norman to sell water. So far, Norman has not asked Oklahoma City for support, but needing that support is a strong possibility as the drought continues.
Oklahoma City issues requirements for use of its water. If used, Norman residents would need to abide by Oklahoma City water conservation orders, according to Ragan. Only a limited amount of water would be supplied to Norman. And, Oklahoma City would reserve the right to cut off its water to Norman, if necessary.
Options for keeping Lake Thunderbird alive include using pipelines to direct water from other lakes, recycling water by allowing treated sewage water to be used and building a new lake. A new lake could take more than a decade to complete, and officials do not know where it will be built.
To save as much water as possible, all three cities are now required to cut back 10 percent on the amount of water pulled from Lake Thunderbird.
The City of Norman says water rationing orders will more than likely be necessary starting in the Spring.

Drought situation across the S Plains is really getting worse.  I knew it was bad west of here but that is getting pretty extreme.  Let's all hope and pray for a wetter 2013 or a lot of people are going to be in trouble.

The drought is worrisome for this area since it's going to probably allow the dryline to mix farther east which sets up severe weather farther east. Instead of getting the storms 'lined out' like we usually do here, that probably increases our chances for supercells. Put that together with a developing La Nina and I'm not looking forward to Spring.

The 12z Euro is rain for the first system and I can't tell what it shows past 180... if there is an overrunning situation or what.

The Euro weeklies, which came in warm a few days ago, has dramatically shifted to very cold now. The Superensemble also shows a very cold pattern coming up. It's going to be interesting to see where the coldest air sets up at. If it is west/central or central/east US.

Yes looking good WRT cold temps.  Just so its not so overpowering cold that everything coming across is suppressed.  Prolly be a good pattern for all the east coast crew.

The East Coast would probably be warmer for longer as the trough favors the west/central part of the US initially. Hopefully we can get something before it shifts to the east... if it shifts to the east. It's also possible that we get screwed, like you mentioned, with everything being more suppressed as the models are just now 'catching on' to the cold air and they will probably come in progressively colder as we move forward in time.
