Here in the Syracuse/CNY area of Upstate NY we rely on NW flow to give us our snowfall off of Lake Ontario. We have been significantly below normal snowfall-wise for years...because the cold NW flow has been missing.

I understand what you're saying. It's easier to go back on here and find discussion that you might have missed. On discord, you have to scroll up and up and try and find "the line" where you left off. I really appreciate the ability to easily post images, pictures, and videos on discord though.

Yeah, I was reading in your sub about the weak low showing up at night and it's still RAIN there. That's been the case up here as well the past several years. Just no cold. Mild, maritime air in the dead of winter with rain even when Lows pass well to the south. It's disgusting. Even in the northern U.S. now, you want to be above 1200 feet in elevation if you want to see some real winter weather outside of the rare cold spells that can possibly produce.

It's actually not shocking anymore. This seems to be a reoccurring theme even up in these latitudes year after year. Not surprising at all to see green grass in the winter with all the bogus thaws and consecutive days of low temperatures being 10 to 15 degrees above the normal high for the time of year.

Yup. I really think the WARM Atlantic waters combined with La Nina have especially been terrible for our winters. SW flow...which Buffalo thrives on for lake effect. Here? Not at all. Rochester still has yet to have the ground completely covered!

Lol. It's been painful chatting with the Buffalo guys and their excitement of already hitting 100 inches on the season...while here in CNY, we have yet again started another season well below normal and highly doubt getting anywhere close to normal.

April will be a good time to come up. We get more snow in the Spring than winter these days...lol. Go to Watertown. It's closer to the cold source. Lol. Actually, I suggest the Thousand Islands, not far from Watertown. Beautiful area.

Absolutely. That SW flow torches the Syracuse area off the hills to the south. I hate it. We've had many overnight highs throughout the year because of it. The boiling water off the coast isn't helping either.

They've just had some dustings that melt quickly. There's been virtually no North wind or cold air off of Lake Ontario to fire up the lake effect. It's been all SW and W events thus far. That's one of the reasons Syracuse is so far behind as well. Plus, with no cold air, the synoptic systems have been rain or slush. Syracuse has seriously underperformed the past 3 winters. This could be our 4th consecutive winter of below (substantially) the 100 inch mark. That's never happened before since record-keeping started.

While here in Syracuse we are at 50% of normal snowfall for where we should be right now. Rochester still hasn't had the ground covered.

Well,, I have lived in Upstate NY for 5 years. Every year, especially here in Central NY, has been exceptionally warm, with heat records being broken left and right. Every single winter has been well-below normal snowfall. It's been especially hard here in lower elevations, where the warmth just floods in. While thaws are normal during winter, it's just been M.I.A. and seriously like an eternal November. I lived in Michigan for a decade before this, and it was very similar. I saw the decline of winter in the Great Lakes throughout the teens. Hopefully it's just a "blip" but I am doubtful. Winters up here remind me of a somewhat snowier version of what they were like when I was growing up in Southeastern PA. Rarely any pure snowstorms anymore.

I see what you're saying. It's been yet another awful start here in Central NY too. Sure, Buffalo and Watertown lucked out, but for the rest of us in Upstate...yawn. When you move to a locale that generally (or used to be) is snowier, you expect winter to start arriving in November and early December. The past couple years, we have had to wait until January. Seems like we have to "thread the needle" in the interior much more now than in the past.

You guys will be growing bamboo pretty soon at this rate.

Amusing...

Several inches of rain in Baldwinsville last week. Several inches since yesterday morning. The grass is turning nice and green. Perfect timing for hopefully some beautiful Fall colors starting to show in a month.

Across the state from Pitt in Scranton, they have even more than Syracuse and MUCH more than Pitt with 17 days this summer of 90 degrees or above. Sort of the opposite of what one would think.

Stupid Sizzlecuse had a nice June, but then once it got hot in July, it's been hot. 13 days of above 90 degrees and then 8 more AT 89 degrees. If the temp goes above 83 degrees here, it SOARS through the 80s and sits at 89 to 92 degrees. It's like the "set state" for afternoon highs here on hot days. 3rd consecutive summer with over 20 days around 90 degrees. The gateway to hell.
