It is what got me to start keeping a weather diary/report, which I still do to this day.

That was the sound heard here in Oct 9/10 1979 when 4-10 inches of heavy wet snow fell on still leafed out (but turning) trees. Just the continuous pop, pow, snap, bam from trees breaking.

30.8/30.1 and light freezing rain here, getting a small glaze already on non snow covered objects.

At work, just looked out. Snowing pretty good, roads covered and I'd estimate 2 inches.

The Blacksburg radar at Copper Hill is down this week, so that makes the I-81 slot up to about Staunton look like nothing going on...

Nice coating here now as a good combo of small and pillow feather sized flakes falling. 34.0/31.9

After being rain and temp near 37 all day have switched over to a snow/sleet combo and temps falling, currently 35.9/33.1.

Driveway is wet here too, from rain....36.8/33.2

Ultimately, 6.4 inches of dry, powdery snow fell at National Airport. The high temperature only reached only 23 degrees before the sun rose, and the very cold temperatures helped snowfall measurements to be fairly uniform across the area. ??

There were 4 days with measurable snow on ground at the 7 am reading time. The average high was 41.8 degrees vs a normal of 42.5 degrees, a -0.7 below average. The warmest day was on the 1st with a 58.1 degree reading. The average low was 26.6 degrees vs a normal of 21.8 degrees, a +4.8 above average. The coldest reading was on the 30th with 14.5 degrees. The overall averaged temp was 34.2 degrees vs the normal of 32.1 degrees, a +2.1 above average. The highest wind recorded was 35 mph on the 20th. Records for the month are 2 new daily rainfalls, one on the 26th and the other on the 3rd. Overall a slightly warmer and wetter than average January for around here. Records from October 1979.
