  1. I win, and President Grover Cleveland will send emissaries to find out how I do this. Even so, he'll lose the election later this year. But get this, he'll win another one in 1892. He'll be the only president to get two different numbers. Cool.
  2. Maps are improving in the make or break Mar 5-10 period. Can you smell what the Rog is cooking?
  3. Winter Seasonal Scoring 2018-2019 The "four seasons" contest will change this year to a rank-ordered format that will perhaps stay mostly confined to the eleven regular forecasters we have at the moment unless somebody new joins in and plays all months in any given season. So you'll see one table of total scores and one of ranks. The overall low score on ranks like in golf will win the event. 4. I'm laughing at the cone toss, not the tree damage or the potential danger to the people around where it fell. Re the traffic accident on Hwy 400 north of Toronto, a similar outcome during a storm in March 1973 but in that case more deadly results, I think eight people died in that multi-vehicle pile-up.
  5. Seems worth capturing the image from space on this historic deep low (in this image, centre quite evident south of Timmins, ON).
  6. I've only seen snow like that in high elevations of the Selkirk Mountains around here, or in the mid-1970s in Ontario. There was a time in January 1976 when six to eight feet of snow covered most of the London ON region and snowplow drifts were up above ten feet high, the city works people had to go around the side streets placing poles with flags on them to mark the location of fire hydrants. In early April 1975 there was a storm like this one in central Ontario and it closed highways for a week with people stranded in community centres and church basements in towns north of Toronto. But that storm started with only a foot of snow at the most on the ground, so one can only imagine how much worse this one will be for future recovery and travel issues. One thing I can advise (for the Minnesota open country especially) is that if you don't clear the big undulating drifts from driveways etc, they will freeze hard in the freeze-thaw cycle of the strong sunshine and cold temperatures to follow, and when they freeze, they are going to last 2-3 weeks minimum.
  7. Hang in there, looks like another 10-15" event for the u.p. next weekend. At least there should be four fairly decent days to clear snow between Tuesday and Friday.
  8. Gusting to 52 knots at Houghton MI and that's not as exposed as some places might be. Highest gust I could find from the storm was 57 knots at BUF. Low is currently located around Elliot Lake ON about 100 miles northeast of SSM at 970 mbs. Agree in general with the wording of EC blizzard warning but some local amounts may surprise, Lake Huron has minimal ice cover, betting that a mega-squall band sets up across north-central Simcoe County (Midland-Orillia area) which I have seen in real life a few dozen times, you can get 30-50 cm in a few hours when that one gets going. It was always a question driving north into that area, where do you hit the wall of snow, I could usually tell from wind direction within one or two concession roads in the stretch between Barrie and Orillia (used to live in that area including 1974-78, some big snowfall events that gave a similar outcome to what we're seeing in these pictures). Parallel bands from central Lake Huron further south mostly 20-30 cm max, one probably running Goderich to Listowel roughly and another Bayfield to Stratford, but highly variable amounts likely in banding.
  9. The above discussion about the impact of snow at the six locations mentioned is now about two-thirds used up by the snow that just fell at MQT, MSP and LSE (with 2" estimated for APN, a total of 30" at these locations). Later edit, 2.5" also added at GRB, so now a total of 32.5" most of which is confirmed. Most who had some surplus there have now used that up and are accumulating. I still have small amounts left to use up at MSP and LSE, and others have some to use at MQT. The new standings show that the race is tightening up near the middle of the pack.

  11. IAD 20.5" DCA 13.0" BWI 17.8" RIC 2.5" MBY ... 6" on top of current frozen 6" ... but I'm not in MA so I'll say 40" at some ski resort in WV
  12. Scotland. Outer coasts of British Columbia. Victoria Island, NWT. Iceland. take your pick (and your bug spray)
  13. March 5-7 is the jackpot time period, I think this is when the trof will be deepest and energy peaks around then.

  15. DSM will be right in the path of this low, expect cold rain mixing with sleet until the low center passes overhead by about 9 pm CST, then S+ for 4-6 hours, winds backing from ENE to NNE then NNW 40 to 55 mph, likely to give 5-8" there, 8-12" a few miles northwest. Will rapidly become a white-out for highways in Iowa and southern Minnesota. Would predict 10-15" for southeast MN and northwest WI, local 20" maxes and 20-30" into western u.p. of MI with more lake enhancement available there.
  16. Raging blizzard conditions now in central NE will move across nw IA into se MN and nw WI, u.p. of MI should have a blizzard warning too, at least west of MQT to IWD. Potential for 24-36 inch snowfalls in lake enhanced flows, 50-60 mph wind gusts, single digit temps, if that's not a blizzard then what is? This is a wound-up system with a lot of energy. Low is just northwest of TOP at this point.
  17. 40 of 59 forecasters still have not reached their forecast snowfalls at any of four locations. An additional four have only passed RIC. In addition, only one tiebreaker forecast has been surpassed, none of the three for LYH so it's one at SBY. However, recent snow remains "msg" if there was any, another tiebreaker forecast is within 0.4" of being overtaken without that.
  18. I just added 12" at BWI-IAD, 8" at DCA and 4" at RIC, which is the over-under on what I expect this pattern to produce now to end of contest. That gives the following top six: 1. Shadowzone ___ 6.1" 2. BTRwxT-G _____8.2" 2. Prestige ww ___ 8.2" 4. NorthBaltiZen __ 8.4" 5. Mappy ________ 8.6" 6. wxwatch007 ___ 9.9" The maximum that could conceivably be added might be 20" at BWI-IAD, 15" at DCA and 8" at RIC. That gives this top six finish: 1. High Stakes ____________13.8" Half way from the over-under to the extreme, it's Cobalt in the lead but mostly the same leaders as above. So there's a group around 30th to 40th place now who could do quite well with perhaps one big storm or two moderate ones and a few minor top ups. Let's say there's just one more event and it goes south, so I add 2" to the northern three and 12" to RIC, then this is the outcome: 1. stormPC _____________ 14.2" 2. Grothar in Herndon ____ 16.3" 3. 19. Just finished, Mr President, no foreign interference found anywhere. My list is back on January 14th, since you've posted the entire list, I won't bother moving it to this page but it has pretty colors to look at. By the way, LYH added 3.2" and is at 19.6" now. SBY was still missing as of last check, did it snow over there? They were at 5.0" before this event. All kidding aside, just one big storm and this whole exercise becomes academic.
  20. Have updated the files back on page five that give the overview against RIC and DCA actuals. Working on the list of snowfall required, as we have the full list now from Prince Fred wx, I am checking it against that, so far down to 15th place and it all matches up. Will go faster now that I am past most of the adding on type errors, down to the thundering herd of reducing errors. But will we find that distant watering hole? Coach Belichek says yes, the secondary looks tired and this play should work Tom ... and Tom says yeah, I can do this. (on three, KU wide right cut to the left sidelines).
  21. We're just going into the fourth quarter, and Belichek is whispering stuff in Tom Brady's ear, and he's smiling that smile. Current leaders, enjoy what little time you have left.
  22. Looks like it was a mere 0.1" for RIC ... will update my tables for all locations back in the thread later Thursday.
  23. LSE and GRB have now become 6th and 7th locations to surpass contest normal snowfalls. MSP will join them after its next snowfall event. Good locations to have surplus snow in your forecast would seem to be APN, GRB, MSP, LSE, MQT and YYZ. The contest is getting very close now in terms of projected total errors. If I assume that each location will add 20% to its current total, then the order would be considerably altered from the current contest order. These are the total "locked in" errors that you have to date (where your forecast already exceeded by actual snow, sum of red numbers in the tables). But it all depends on where you have the snow available to use up, if most of it is CLE and YXU, then everyone else has similar totals there. This list shows the total locked in errors, amounts left to use up, and total amount left to use up at APN+MQT+GRB+LSE+YYZ+MSP which are still in play for some. vpbob21 ___ 31.2" (has 210.8" left at 16 locations). ... 47.7" at the six (APN etc) Roger Smith_32.2" (has 271.7" left at 17 locations). ... 84.2" at the six (APN etc) slowpoke ___36.6" (has 129.6" left at 14 locations). ... 10.2" at two of the six (APN etc) cyclone77 __ 39.9" (has 151.9" left at 13 locations). ... 15.3" at APN only madwx ____ 43.2" (has 174.1" left at 12 locations). ... 17.8" at two of the six dmc76 _____48.4" (has 306.3" left at 16 locations). ... 29.1" mostly at YYZ DAFF ______ 58.8" (has 107.8" left at 10 locations). ... 0.3" at APN Miss. snow __59.9" (has 174.3" left at 13 locations). ... 48.2" at four of the six. DonSutherland 88.5" (has 314.6" left at 15 locations). ... 12.9" at APN and YYZ Stebo ______ 96.9" (has 177.9" left at 10 locations). ... 9.2" at MQT and YYZ jackstraw __105.7" (has 211.7" left at 11 locations). ... 2.7" at YYZ ______________________________________________________________ It seems very likely that all (perhaps most for YYZ) of those six-location totals will come off the total errors so with my total of 84.2" coming off, it means you will be trading at double the differential of your total (applied to current differentials) so that only looks good for vpbob21 and Mississauga Snow who will lose about 80" but are ahead by more than that now. I can catch just about anyone else ahead of me on these stations. However, this does not factor in when MKE, DTW or perhaps CMH flip to accumulating errors, I don't have anything left at MKE. So there's one scenario, if it snows heavily across the north and not much in places where I'm behind, such as ORD, then I have a chance. You can look over the errors and see what's your best bet for a high finish. I don't think there's any point in looking at CLE or YXU, they aren't going to reach anybody's forecasts (so your errors there in relative terms will not change). MLI is used up for all forecasters and PIA soon will be (vpbob21 has a bit more to use there, an advantage of about 12").
  24. Yeah it will be there by tomorrow, won't be much (0.4" or so )
