  1. The scenes we saw last week after the ice storm were incredible. The beauty of an ice storm is jaw dropping. But it also comes with inconvenience, destruction, and hundreds of thousands of people being without power in Winter. So many people losing trees that they probably loved for a day of beauty would definitely not be worth it. Sleet is as boring as you can get but at least at the end of the day it looks like snow and it's harder to melt.
  2. Yes that's what they meant, their service area. Wyandotte has their own electric too so didn't have to wait for DTE here lol.
  3. This was my worst since 2002. I had lighter glazing in the 2 you mentioned and i remember the disaster that Apr 2003 was to the north. BUT I think DTE means this is the worst widespread storm. The heart of the metro area was creamed with ice and more people = more outages.
  4. I'm thinking amd certainly hoping the same thing. Models often start south, then go North North North, then settle back South some.
  5. DTE calling the Feb 22 ice storm 2nd worst in their 125 year history. Quite a few still without power. I had 0.1" of sleet and glaze of ice this morning but now it's 33° rain
  6. I have no problem including the 1970s....in fact I love looking at data from 70s winters...I just have a problem with excluding things before the 1970s. The warm period of the 1930s-50s will really knock down a strong regression line that would be seen if you start in 1970.
  7. I have no idea what my grade will be, have to see what the remainder of the season brings. And wow I thought you would have been impressed with that ice storm. It was crazy and the destruction in its wake is something to see, definitely the power of mother nature. Ice is a total love/hate thing for me.
  8. Since your grade is mostly on storms, if we get this your grade would absolutely be higher than a pure winter enthusiast's grade. We've already had 2 good winter storms (Jan 25 snow, Feb 22 Ice) and a White Christmas.
  9. Winter is Nov to Apr. Any snow and winter storms count.
  10. Nice pic. Jealous. Reminds me of Feb 2021 & 2018 here.
  11. If I go down with the ship I go down with a ship, but I'm still liking a snowy March.
  12. Since 2008, 9 Februaries have made the top 20 snowiest list, and 2 Februaries have made the top 20 least snowiest list. Pretty crazy since snow records go to 1880.
  13. 1.4" of pure powder this morning. Quick hitter, didn't expect that much. Brings season total to date to 21.5". DTW also had 1.4", season to date 21.1". This was our 6th shovelable snow of the season Nov 19- 1.8" Dec 23- 2.4" Dec 25- 2.4" Jan 22- 3.7" Jan 25- 6.2" Feb 25- 1.4" Then another 4" total of non shovelable snows. Here are some ice storm casualties covered in snow.
  14. January 30/31, 2002 was a snow to ice storm that dropped over 9" of snow followed by very heavy freezing rain. It was an insane storm. For me this is the worst ice storm since that. I know for some of the northern suburbs they really got hit bad and April 2003. There was also a pretty big ice storm in March 1997. But the grand daddy seems to be March 1976. DTE keeps calling this the worst widespread ice storm in 50 years
  15. It was a day of chainsaw sounds in the air. I cannot believe how many trees and tree branches were down. I just realized my neighbor's white pine lost a huge branch on the alley side. Most ironic of all I did not lose anything, not even off of my big balsam fir which lost 3 big limbs during the January 25th snowstorm. Hehe now the city will pick them up when they get all the other branches in the alleys. Also, took some white birch limbs from a few blocks down, put them in the garage to dry out, and they make great decor pieces for fireplaces or Christmas decor. Made this ice storm work for me.
  16. That's because the extremely cold 1970s make their mark known everywhere. I know some people hate doing it, but we are allowed to look at climate data before 1970. Nashville January 1931-1960: 39.9 1961-1990: 36.2 1991-2020: 39.1 Detroit January 1931-1960: 26.8 1961-1990: 23.2 1991-2020: 25.8
  17. I know nothing about Nashville so I did not realize that but I know UHI can be a problem. But regardless, this region has been on a run of cold snowy Februarys so a mild February is not so surprising. Not fun for Winter lovers, but not surprising.
  18. Toledos avg temp would still be -3.5° for a Nashville January. 2 years ago in February Toledo was closer to Green Bay. If any month was well overdue to be a stinker it was February. Ready to turn the page to March.
  19. That's the city over from me. The damage is crazy and it's everywhere.
  20. I just lost power because they had to shut it off to replace lines down the street where a huge tree fell. Driving around last night I just cannot believe the damage. It's crazy what an ice storm can do. I had 1.05" freezing rain fall (T snow/sleet). If temps were 29-30 instead of 32 it would've been catastrophic.
  21. It's incredible how almost always the NWS MQT sees so much more snow than surrounding areas. But I've seen it twice with my own eyes now how much deeper it is in that localized area. Imo its not really representative of the marquette area as a whole to keep the official numbers there but I sure as hell know where I would move if I lived in the area lol.
  22. What's funny is that while this was undoubtedly a bad Feb, it doesn't feel AS bad as the snowfall number shows since the first week had snowcover and now the ice storm. Likewise, the first 3 weeks if January were so torturous, when the month ended it was like, wow how did we get a foot of snow in that sucky January?
  23. Detroit has only had 0.5" which also would be 2nd least snowy Feb if it holds. It's absolutely the other shoe dropping after an incredible run. 9 of the top 14 snowiest Febs have come since 2008 (records date to 1880)! The month does seem a little wintrier than that since the first week was blanketed in snow and we had the big ice storm.
