  1. We're only halfway done. But so far it's definitely not as bad as 2011-12 here. Plenty of time for improvement or unimprovement lol. The wintriest spells have been mid November, the week of Christmas, and late January. We have had snow on the ground continuously since the morning of Jan 22 with no melt in immediate sight. We are at 19.2" so far....2011-12 was my all time low (since I started in 1995-96) of 25.5".
  2. Interesting graphic. Side note, I see your phone does the same annoying thing mine does when making a post lol. Crazy enough, with the half inch of snow today, Detroit actually is in an exact tie with last season to date. Both 2021-22 & 2022-23 were at 19.2" thru Jan 30th. Avg to Date is 24.2". Last season finished at 47.1", which is a 2.1" above avg but about 6" above the longterm avg.
  3. You are in the Indiana suburbs of Chicago right? I did not realize it has been that bad. Whats your season to date? Going beavis is justified. In fact that's what it should be used for, not knit picking little things during snowier times.
  4. Picked up 0.5" of snow this morning, which brings my January total to 11.6" and the season to date 19.6". Made up quite a bit of ground the last 8 days. DTW will finish January with 11.7" of snow bringing their season to date 19.2". I do think it's cool how so many people made snowmen during the packing snow last week. Every day I stumble across new ones.
  5. When I drove by this huge snowman, along a main road, this afternoon, I literally lol'd and had to turn around for a pic. Wish I got a better one.
  6. I'm like a grandparent talking about their grandkids when it comes to the Winter of 2013-14. I just can't get enough of it. The polar vortex storm was awesome and the temperature drop behind it was something I've never seen. Digging out in -50゚ wind chills was quite an experience. And to think that that was only the beginning of a historic winter! The sunset pic was taken right after the polar vortex storm ended. The rest of the pics are from February.
  7. Snow depth here is now between 4 and 5". Extremely dense. With the cad coming might be a nice time to take a brisk winter walk at a metro park.
  8. I didn't realize snow was that close lol. Forgot to ask, what did you get the 25th?
  9. Just got a little light freezing rain here. Temp only got up to 32 so never got warm. Looks like Toledo hit 40°
  10. It's definitely been an "A" Winter in Minneapolis. Here, right as we enter the midway point of Winter, I have to say my grade has bumped up to a "C-" November had a surprise heavy burst of snow on the 12th where it puked the biggest flakes I've ever seen, and then the Arctic front on the 19th dropped a few inches with below 0 windchills. The December 23rd storm with temperatures near 0 and wind chills of -30 creating blizzard conditions may have fallen short of initial accumulation potential but it was pretty sweet to see 2 days before Christmas. Then waking up Christmas morning to a fresh and unexpected 2" blanket of new snowfall which covered the old drifty snow and made for an absolutely courier and Ives Christmas scene January was the definition of dumpster fire until last week. All of a sudden we're over 11" on the month thanks to 3.7" & 6.2" storms this past week, both caked to everything, the latter of which was a good storm, and we have snowpack in place for the cold
  11. We were spoiled with a lot of great winters that definitely made expectations extra high. This Winter has really been a widespread stinker but even all the complaints about the last several winters, at least locally, don't make sense to me because while they were not great they were not bad at all. Winters like this make you appreciate even the average ones. We definitely made a nice big leap in snowfall totals this past week, but at the halfway point of Winter no idea what the rest is going to bring. February is looking to start pretty zzzzz unlike recent years, but who knows if that will stay the course or not.
  12. I remember quite a few days with blowing snow last winter but like you said, all depends on if you were at work or not. Would be cool to see it blowing off a big building like that. Actually last February had a couple of good storms. Including the one on the 2nd and 3rd. I don't care how short of initial expectations it was, we still had 8 to 9" of snow on the ground February 4th. And then of course the Winter before was even better with snow getting up to 14" deep in mid February. The last few winters certainly had periods of highs and lows but overall I don't have complaints unlike others on here. A more widespread blah winter like this one makes you appreciate the average snow seasons more lol. 13. This is what I get for complimenting the models on performing so well with the January 25th snowstorm. For an event that's one day away I have literally no idea what's going to happen here.
  14. Had some good squalls here too. Dropped 0.8" of snow as temperatures warmed from 26 to 36 so its compacting/melting. The solid snow pack continues to be Snowman/snowfort heaven.
  15. My brother who lives in lincoln park chicago for some reason thought he was included in the snowstorm the other day. When we were sending pictures (family group text) he was like wow that's crazy the storm was a dud here. Now today he just sends, "we had more snow today than we had in that storm".
  16. Models stayed steady and the forecast was dead on for January 25th snowstorm, and i said afterward this was well forecast and played out as expected. So I'm sure we will be back to our regularly scheduled model mayhem for the next event. And we are.
  17. Picked up another 0.2" today. A slushy morning but nevertheless beautiful. The conifers have kept their snow but a lot of the snow on other trees fell off. Snowmen and snowforts everywhere with the textbook packing snow. Lost a few limbs off my big balsam fir. https://www.weather.gov/dtx/2023-01-25-SoutheastMichigan-Snowstorm
  18. Thump snows for sure. That was what made this a good storm. We had bigger storms and deeper depths the last few years, but that was a prolonged thump for sure!
  19. Finished with 6.2" here. My snowblower constantly clogged because the snow was SO wet. Detroit officially had 6.5". Seems like a general 6-8" in SE MI just as forecast. No complaints at all. The marginal temps were well advertised and it absolutely RIPPED this afternoon.
  20. The scenery is absolutely incredible. Side roads are trashed but obviously the snow is very wet
  21. We have crossed the 3" mark. DTW is currently at 1/8 mile visibility.
  22. There's many different ways to rate a storm. In terms of rates, the best rates we've actually seen here in recent years we're on February 4th, 2021 when we saw that in the same band come through and give us nearly 3" in one hour, but the event itself only lasted 3 hours and dropped 4.2". Then of course, a few weeks after that we had an 11" snow storm on the 15th and 16th but it came over the course of 2 days and was a bit drawn out. Last Winter, the much maligned February 2nd and 3rd event came in 2 waves, a very underperforming 6" with wave 1 and 3" with wave 2. Then a few weeks after that we had another storm drop nearly 7". So we've had several different good events but each of them has their own thing to pick apart. With this event, I'd have to say the ratios would be what I pick at but it will be remembered for the consistency of the models and several hours of HEAVY snowfall!
