  1. Oh 100% March is deeper winter than December in the UP. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year and Winter is my favorite season, so it's a no brainer that snow during the holidays is high on my list. However, I can't ever get used to the general public's fascination with snow at Christmas then wanting spring by new years. Obviously December is usually wintry, but there are a few things that could go wrong. It could be cold and suppressed and there has been times there's deeper snow in southern MI than up North. Or it could be a horrible warm start to Winter with shoddy conditions. But no matter what happens during the winter you can count on deep snow in late february and early march, usually the deepest of the entire winter. That's why my winter trips are always mid to late Feb.
  2. Yup. Mostly rain in the Soo. So Detroit has 15.7" in March and the Soo a T. But they still have 20" depth lol
  3. Wow. Meanwhile Sault Ste Marie remains at a trace in March
  4. I doubt Harry averages low 50s yet. Avg high for Detroit today is 47, warming to 52 March 31st.
  5. So far locally this March has ended up warmer and a lot snowier than I anticipated. I did think we would get a good snowstorm, but I didn't think we'd get a parade of snowfalls. But I also thought it would be colder.
  6. 2013-14 It was flat out the most severe winter on record for Detroit. when you combine snowfall, snow depth, days with snow on the ground, and cold, not to mention wind and constant blowing snow, no other winter has come close. Nothing in the vaunted 1970s held a candle. I suppose in a lake effect belt it's easier top snow records in less than desirable winters. But even grand rapids residents would probably agree that two winters don't compare.
  7. We going to be well below average on the 18th of the 19th. The map you shared was for the 18th-24th, which will very likely finish colder than average even if the period ends warmer than average.
  8. Any long range solution PERIOD should be taken with a grain of salt. This weekends cold shot was fairly well modeled in the longrange. Others won't be.
  9. Today is the first time in two weeks the ground is totally bare. Though plowed piles in parking lots remain. That is a decent stretch for march considering it did not begin with a left over snow pack
  10. I have a friend who lives in the city of Toledo. And it seems like they've had more snow than TOL reports. nevertheless, a huge difference between toledo (14.1") and Detroit (36.9").
  11. Wow. It's funny some winters the state line is so often the dividing line. Then toledo will randomly get a snowstorm.
  12. You know it's mid-March sun angle when...
  13. Not often you see this. Through the first half of March, monthly snowfall sits at 15.7" for Detroit and a trace for Sault Ste Marie.
  14. We're 3 years running now with late April snowfalls. If anything is hit or miss it's late season snows. 2005 had an incredible late season snowstorm Apr 23-24. Some years you get nothing. At Detroit the earliest last flakes were March 11, 1946. The latest was May 31, 1910.
  15. Those maps were horrible. They had interns playing around with Co-Op data and the maps were extremely inaccurate. I'm fine with them stopping them.
  16. If they mandated a rule that you can't start a dataset in the 1970s, these people would give up their day jobs. Locally spring snowfall actually has been on the decline, mostly because of March (even though this is a top ten snowy march lol). But of course Winter snowfall has been on the rise, as has the frequency of bigger snow falls and deeper snow packs. Change in snowfall at Detroit 1973-2022 Fall 3.0 to 2.2 Winter 31.6 to 37.7 Spring 9.6 to 6.5 Net 44.2 to 46.0 POR (1880-2022) Fall 2.8 to 2.7 Winter 26.4 to 32.9 Spring 10.4 to 6.6 Net 39.8 to 42.2
  17. Considering we snow off and on from October through May, and snow averages are at all time highs for many great lakes cities, I don't think I'm going to grow pineapples soon.
  18. Yes it went from very cold to hot. Not sure if you're area got accumulation, it was mostly east side. But we did have snowflakes 5 days in a row (May 8-12).
  19. Actually...see the 11pm-1am heavy snow of May 10-11, 2020.
  20. I remember you saying that when I originally posted it!
  21. I was jealous of missing that one. We only had about a half inch here, just missed it to the south. But as mentioned we have been on a string of late snowfalls. April 18, 2022 April 21, 2021 April 17, 2020
  22. I guess taken literally "dusting AT BEST" would imply to me T-0.4". But the weather observer in me doesn't use those phrases lol.
  23. Meanwhile the last 3 April's at DTW 2022- 4.1" 2021- 3.6" 2020- 4.9" The April 20/21, 2021 snowstorm dropped 3.6" at DTW but 4.4" here and with things blooming early, the scenes on Apr 21st were surreal.
  24. Mostly just flurries and light snow showers except 1.8" with the Nov 19 lake enhanced arctic front
