Certainly not the deepest snow we have the season, but its a winter wonderland nonetheless. Went out for a walk today to enjoy the return of white. Temperatures have spiked into the low to mid thirties but should plummet soon with perhaps squalls

Autumn/Winter 2019-2020 Banter/Complaint Thread

Haha i hope it isnt coming. As jonger said, just a bad pattern this year, it happens. We've "lucked" out since we are far the North, but it's been a bad pattern. -
Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion

Extended continues to look active. Thinking several more snow systems in the offing, the more north one is the better. -
Whats funny, is that outside of the record or near record early green up in 2012 (no actual records exist to compare, but id say its up there with 1945 as earliest on record), most years since have had a late greenup. Its actually to the point where it almost seems like the color season and spring greenup have each shifted a bit later, maybe like a week
-
Fair point, esp regarding temps (avg snowfall is 6.9"). But i think of april as the bigger transition month. April is a month that most years has both days with snowflakes and days where it feels like summer. But in terms of looks, outside of 2012, march landscape definitely looks more like winter than spring.
-
March is overwhelmingly a winter month here.
-
Here there are lots of piles in parking lots and some elsewhere, but no patchy snow survived.

Almost a match to me. Im at 22.3". Dont get me wrong, i loved both big storms but i would prefer more evenly distributed.

Munising and grand marais almost always do well. I notice some grass is green (not spring green but not brown) but then some is not. Ponds and smaller lakes have thin ice but only a fool would attempt to go on it. Bigger bodies of water are open or with chunky ice. Now that the snow here has melted, if not for all the snow piles around it may seem like mid or late March rather than early Feb. Hopefully the upcoming pattern replenishes our snowcover downstate and adds to the depth up north. There have been years where my drive up 75 shows snowcover is just as good down here as most of the rest of lower mi (outside of the ever present gaylord lollipop) so its good to see that this year the north is really cashing in and making the most, tho they usually do in milder winters. -
What are you at on the season? Lol, 2 warning criteria snows here but everything else has been in the T to 1.3" range.
-
Definitely not mad at cyclone. As I recall he did have quite a few lean years and he may have had a long stretch between 6" snowfalls if I'm not mistaken, though he would certainly be the one to clarify that. After many years of the Eastern sub being the jackpot, they've gotten some love in the Western sub as you can now see.

After a somewhat unexpected 0.6" of snow last night, temperature has soared to 50゚ with blue skies. This is the 1st time I have seen any blue sky since January 21st. Only snow piles remain.

11-12s sucktitude receives more than enough discussion so it goes without saying. The winter sucked, but was not a futility winter. 06-07 & 15-16 were somewhat below avg but nowhere near futility. 1952-53 is probably one of the worst winters ever at Detroit. The total snowfall of 16.6" ranks it "only" as 7th least snowy on record. Only 16 days had 1"+ of snowcover, and 13 of those 16 recorded a depth of 1"! The other 3 had a depth of 2". The largest snow of the season was 3.2", but like many others it included some rain and melting, ao while its possible depth was 3" for a bit, 52-53 remains the only winter on record to not see an obs time snow depth of 3"+. It is also the only winter on record to have no snow depth over a T after Jan 31st. -

Yes which is why its crazy that we havent had the usual small to mid-size events that make up our climo. Here are the top 5 events at DTW this season so far 9.2" (Nov 11/12) 6.8" (Jan 18) 1.3" (Dec 31) 1.1" (Jan 7/8) 0.7" (Jan 5) Completely at odds with our typically climo -

I don't think any of us would trade a 25" blizzard for a 4" storm. However, if you read some of the other sub forums they literally get excited over a few flakes of snow. When the famine is here, it isnt fun lol. Flakes fall in the lakes pretty much every day even in terrible patterns that are not torching. So many different climates make up North America -

Haha strictly just conversation. I love our entire state and all the lakes that surround it. I will be in Munising February 16-19, and looks active here before that, so hoping for lots of winter fun! -

Im sure they have. It was strictly a snowfall comparison as to what the UP might average without lakes. Winnipeg, like Minneapolis only even more so, certainly makes the most snow cover wise out of the amount of snowfall they receive. But we were strictly discussing how much snow the Great Lakes may avg... without the Great Lakes -

Actually even that's not true. Snow weenies in washington dc or cincinnati would kill to have the winter Detroit or chicago has had thus far. Its all relative. I was up in bos neck of the woods in 2016 (or was it 17 bo?) when they had a very subpar winter for their standards. It was still about a foot to foot and a half of snow on the ground, but in marquette city there were actually bare patches in the urban areas. Of course I was in heaven, but that foot might as well have been a balmy 60° to the locals who expect feet upon feet at that location in the heart of winter. -

Actually i disagree. All of us winter lovers want respectable conditions for mid winter. In fact we had them just last week. There is absolutely NO denying this is not the courier and ives winter snowlovers want. And also, i am probably more like beavis than most on here. I dont care about how impressive the storm is (if i did, this winter is not that bad actually). I just want a winter landscape, and if it comes from sifter snow for days on end while the big ones are suppressed, so be it. But beavis typical gripes about climo and unrealistic demands of winter are very far off the grid. And this is in no way a knock on him, as i said, we are probably the best match on here. -

Actually, the Midwest, Great Lakes, and New England have have had a lot of snowy winters the past 20 years. Averages exist for a reason, and unfortunately balancing out does happen. -

Ive never seen a soapbox like yours lol. You have a right to your opinion but so does everybody else. You literally just said the climo in the entire lower 48 is terrible. I don't know why you don't just move to the North Pole lol. I have seen nobody sugar coating this Winter, if anything, any optimism it is immediately shot down with negativity. Yes, the Winter as a whole has sucked. Yes, we have had many winters like this before. And yes, most other sub forums have it worse than us. I spent lots of time outdoors whenever there has been snow this season, and I highly suggest others do the same. I said it last week and I will say it again, it absolutely kills me when I see someone, assumably sitting inside, complaining about how the long range looks bad when they have snow outside their window. Then when its melted, i do indoor activities lol.
