July 2020 General Discussions & Observations Thread
gravitylover replied to Rtd208's topic in New York City Metro
Those storms are just barely east of me. It's bangin' and rumblin' pretty good with a solid wall of rain falling and a few lightning flashes but I can't tell if it's c2g or c2c. It's totally backlit by the sun to the west and has a hardcore Matisse thing going, too cool edit: It didn't stay totally dry, I did get 3 minutes of heavy rain, 7 minutes of rain overall, and some wind but it was very obviously a fringe situation. -
How is it that so many times a line of rain/storms splits as it gets to me and I stay dry while I can see it raining just east or west of me? Today it's east, black and stormy, lightning, thunder and I can see the wall of rain. A lot of times the last 20 years I'd be the one getting hit but this year is the exact opposite. Just a weird observation but last week proved it out when Brian in Fairfield CT, 30 miles south but just a few miles east got pummeled while I sat here and watched the storm headed his way and stayed dry. edit: It didn't stay totally dry, I did get 3 minutes of heavy rain, 7 minutes of rain overall, and some wind but it was very obviously a fringe situation.

The year started out 'bird strong' but has definitely fizzled. I was out in a forest area today that has historically been a bird wonderland but it was mostly quiet today and I don't know that I heard more than just a couple of cicadas. It's so noticeably quiet it's unnerving, the only regular sound is the mosquitoes buzzing in your face. At one point I thought my daughter was behind me so I stopped to point out how dry a terminally wet area was and it wasn't her behind me it was a coyote. It had been running with me for well over a quarter mile. I started talking before I turned around and when I did it was just sitting there looking at me like a dog, it was so cool! Anyway, so bugs in the garden... Japanese beetles and earwigs are a pain in the butt this year, neither of which has been an issue in the past.

Is that your backyard? Not the worst Coronacation spot Pretty great pic there too Sweet shot dude! Tag me when you're headed somewhere to see it again, I've missed almost all of the great celestial events the last few years.

July 2020 General Discussions & Observations Thread

Damn, 6" more than here ~30 miles north. My wettest period so far was 1.3" in a few hours late Saturday but I was only at ~1.7 before that. October. We are going to get significant snow again in October and early frosts will doom the garden in September. Then it will be 65° t shirt riding weather on Xmas eve again. -
Yup, gonna get wet. Bummer, I was hoping to ride in the morning.

Over the last 5 years the difference is noticeable, the last 2 is mind boggling and super scary. At least here the bird variety is still really good but I don't expect that to be the case next year. In fact I think the birds of prey variety and numbers is still increasing as well as ducks, I've seen more ducks this year than I can ever remember around here. Your broad spectrum idea is most likely the culprit which explains my 2 year observation. Since the current administration relaxed the enforcement of marginally sufficient regulation 3 years ago an already bad situation fell off a cliff.

I didn't know that, thanks! I've been trying to add pollinator attracting plants to the yard for a while now. It seems to be working but this year there has been a massive decline in the number of bugs, particularly bees and butterflies. So far it's only been a small problem in my garden because of the attractants but I can drive 300+ miles on the highway and barely have any on the windshield and that's kind of scary.

So are we getting wet tonight or will it wait until after noon tomorrow?

Possible few SVR/FF Sat July 11 Noon-11P

I've never called a report in. Since the turn of the century I've hoped that those that need to know follow the forums and the reports we post are seen and utilized. Is that too optimistic? -
Went from a reasonable .4 a little before 7pm to 1.7 by a little after 8pm. The wind was definitely worse than Fay delivered and it brought down some big branches and made another big mess in the garden that negated the hours I spent fixing yesterday's damage.

That last round of storms came through in a rather dramatic fashion and dropped an inch in a pretty short time. The wind was worse than yesterday, the rain was much heavier and w lost some big tree branches in addition to more garden damage. Uggh -
Only another .4 so far today but it has been wet all day and now it's boomin' and rumblin' and raining pretty hard. #bringbackthedrought

1.1 storm total, 1.6 for 7 days. While it has been damp here for over a week it's not really that wet, wet enough for plants to flop over in the garden though

Stand still and sweat. Yuck. -
1.1" total. I may have saved most of the corn, I'm not totally confident but I am hopeful. We'll see. The tomatoes are probably gone but may be able to be replanted. Melons and squash are good. With the greens that are done coming out there's plenty of sunny room for root veggies so that's today's plan. I'm guessing you guys don't really care but it feels good to talk about it.
-
So you're part of the problem. All that insecticide spraying is killing all of the beneficials and pollinators. Stop it!
-
.85 Well that wind wreaked havoc on the garden. All of the corn is laying on the ground, lettuce too and 3 tomato plants are broken off at the base
-
That's gonna be expensive, hope ya got a good gig up there
-
The wind is up with some gusts mid teens to near 20, rain ranges from .15>.25 within a few miles of me.
-
It didn't take much to knock over the windward side corn plants
-
Yeah I've had very little rain so that in itself isn't the problem, it's the wind and excessive rainfall rates that do garden damage that I don't want.
-
I was hoping this storm would fizzle, I really don't feel like dealing with a TS at the moment but, since it looks like that won't happen it's time to get cleaned up in the yard and get some fresh gas for the generator. 3-5" of rain and a bit of wind could make things messy.

I'd be inclined to keep the thread here. There will be other threads in that forum that people can refer to but some of us don't migrate over there. From what little I can see I agree with you that the coasts will be most affected but I always wonder if orographics will come into play up here in "the hills" with tropical systems. There have been a few over the years that were awesome up here with double the rainfall they saw south of here.
