Lightening struck my neighbors cherry tree 3 yrs ago. It a barrel 6 feet in diameter. Split it to the roots. I was in my home office and it sounded and felt like a bomb went off. Shook my house. I looked and saw half of it falling to the ground. Tree was detonated. I have stacks of it still - we split it up and divided it among the helpers. I do not remember seeing anything blackened. Could have done, but I didnt see it.

at least you can see the sun now.

NYCs air is worse than the air in Toronto - which is in the country that is on fire. Dang. I keep thinking about like Chernobyl or something where there is a radiological disaster, and this is how the radiation would propagate, only you could not see it or smell it.
-
It would never be snow next, I can assure you of that.

I got pea size hail from it.

I got hail. pea size hail rn.

Wind really whipped up here in Westchester. I can see dark clouds to my northeast and have been hearing thunder from the same direction. I probably just experienced about a 35 MPH gust.
-
NWS issued a SWS, said ping pong hail and 60 MPH winds here. Saw neither but we had a few boomers and flashes. Its all past HPN heading south. more later looks like.

May obs/discussion thread - Welcome to Severe Season!!

I just commented in the NY thread…I smell smoke on the breeze. The air down here is thick with haze, as bad as its been this week. Is it from Canada or is it something else? This has happened before about 13 yrs ago when Colorado was on fire so it is possible. -
Am I crazy or am I smelling smoke? I am pretty sure there is a light whiff of it in the air.

May obs/discussion thread - Welcome to Severe Season!!

I love late season snow piles. When I was a kid I would grab a couple snowballs from the last of the spring piles and throw them in the freezer for some reason I can't really recall. Prolly I was like pretending I had snow year-around since there was some in the freezer. -
I just picked up a bunch more wood pellets for this cold spell. Damn. Hate this shiz weather upcoming.

I sprang for the mini split a couple years back. I got a 36000 btu multi head unit and it handles the house pretty much. Cheap to run. I decided also to get a heat pump water heater which is also cheap. Bonus: I have a dry basement now! I used to have wall units which sounded like helicopters and cost a lot to run. Wish i changed em out sooner. -
I have seen plenty of bears including grizzlys in Wyoming. The scene was clear to me! The bear was running down the deer. Adding that one of the 2 boys might have caught some of the action in their phones. I will try to track it down.

Hmmm. I call BS - this is not always the case. Last August I was driving in the Catskills with an exchange student from Germany who just got to the US a day or 2 before. He was talking about how amazed at how much wilderness we have when we all spotted a big ass bear tearing up a hill toward a few deer that were feeding. I never saw anything like it. That bear was a killer. We passed by before the scene ended but I think the bear had closed enough ground to get to one when we saw it unfold. To me it was behaving. Like a Savanah lion. The German kid was freaked out. He never saw a bear in the wild much less a killer bear. Me neither in my 50 years!

You are still among us. It worked.

I don’t know how I resist the urge to do the same thing and bolt. I know you are not supposed to do that. Stand there and make noises and wave arms and make yourself a threat, so the theory goes. That feels like basically the bear would think thats the bell from the ice cream truck ringing. one time I saw a bear at night. I did not really know it until I was probably fucked. I was walking down a road and I saw its eyes in my flashlight way down a bit and I thought it was a racoon. Beady green eyes. Not a deer. When I got to the spot the bear was (he left) I realized the eyes would have been 3 feet off of the ground and then I put the 2 and 2 together and damn near pooped my pants when I realized I miscalculated. That thing could have 10 feet from me right then! I did not run because I didn't know if I would be running toward the bear! I just beamed the light in every direction until I got back to my camp. Shit scared literally. Same as you. I feel you, man!

I think we need to add the eggplant emoji this site.

They need it for the watersheds, esp. lake Powell and Meade. Those need a decade of snow like this to catch up most likely. At least this year the water diversion to Southern California won’t be needed thanks to their record snows as well.
