  1. 32 with light snow, pellets in Sparta. Nothing on the ground. Schools are closed today. Not sure that was the right call yet, but many do err on the side of caution.
  2. Watch for some evap cooling as the system moves in? A degree or two here and there will affect areas of accumulations (grass vs. pavement), especially NW. TWC hourly shows this starting right at the morning rush. Hmmmm.
  3. It seems like we dodged the worst of the freezing rain up here in Sparta. There isn't much ice accretion on trees and power lines. However, what's on the ground is a crust overtop of paste which is causing real problems on some side streets, sidewalks, and driveways. Snow blowers can't do this, so it's a lot of scraping. Temp is currently 33.4 with light rain, and I think TWC is full of it with a forecasted high of 43 (which would be helpful if it verified, but probably not happening).
  4. TWC is really hyping the threat of a nasty ice storm for northern and inland central NJ and much of PA. Meanwhile dewpoints in my area continue to hover in the single digits. That's going to lead to a good deal of evap cooling, at least in the beginning half of things.
  5. I teach, and I hear a lot of co-workers convinced we're getting a big one from reading TWC and Accuweather. We're in central Sussex County, NJ, so I guess it could go either way. Campus here sits in a bit of a geographic bowl, so I've seen colder air get trapped here, whereas two miles up the road it's 5 degrees warmer.
  6. Light snow and wind here. If that squall line holds together, that could be a real doozy on the roads later.
  7. Interesting. It's still 42 degrees, and already, what melted off today is re-freezing. I did not expect to go out and slip on the ice, at least not yet.
  8. Nice to hear from you again Walt!
  9. Getting treacherous in Sparta with the setting sun. Sleet and freezing rain mix. Ice accretion was minimal all day but has picked up in the past two hours. Temp is down to 30 and all surfaces are icing over. Ironically, a good coating of sleet could be modestly helpful, at least for walking the dog.
  10. Um, there are temperature across Sussex County right now down into the mid-30s. The hourly forecast shows temperatures rising until about 3 am and then crashing thereafter. Is it really going to warm to the mid 40s out this way before heading south again? Because I'm a little skeptical.
  11. I wouldn't underestimate ice accretion at any temperature below freezing. True 30-32 probably isn't as harmful as the 20s, but I've seen it where my location gets stuck at 28 or so, or gets into an evaporational cooling situation that shaves a couple more degrees off. Then we have bigger problems, as we did in the December, 2019 storm. It didn't affect a very large area, but was highly disruptive for some out this way.
  12. I agree with gravitylover RE: your often utterly ridiculous take on things. Ice storms can be damaging anywhere, especially with aging infrastructure that definiately needs to be addressed. But to suggest that it only affects "hicks and neandrathals" (your terms, not mine), is short sighted and asinine. Take a look at weather history. You will find many storms over the years have affected various parts of the world in destructive ways, including many communities of color who don't have the means to pick right back up and rebuild or move elsewhere after a natural disaster.
  13. Low of 3 in Sparta. It is a nice winter morning as long as you don't mind this sort of thing, and if there is no wind.
  14. Light snow is falling in Sparta, even though the radar over me is clear. We've gotten a dusting this evening so far.
  15. nudge it a little west, but not too far. I don't want to be in the complete pummel with snow zone, maybe a foot would be neat, but my enthusiasm wanes soon after that.
  16. It will be interesting to follow developments over the next seven days. Meanwhile, our low here in Sparta was -5, the coldest I've seen since moving here a year a half ago. I'm content with the current snow/ice pack for now (~3-4 inches), given how cold it's been.
  17. Looks like a high of 36 will do it here - close but enough to avert a zr disaster. Went from heavy snow to heavy sleet to heavy rain overnight with gusty winds. Now light rain is falling. The refreeze on this one is going to be epic, with the ground is frozen solid the water is ponding all around on top of the snow, where we walk the dog, etc.
  18. That cold air appears pretty stubborn up here in the northwestern part of the state. We've actually dropped back to 20.5 from 23 earlier (probably evap cooling). We've got a ways to travel if it's going to be 40 up here by morning. It's currently snowing moderately with about 1.5 inches of new snow.
  19. That's what worries me. If the time above freezing is of shorter duration, and/or it never makes it beyond the mid-30s due to all this very cold air right at the surface, that can turn into a huge mess. Give me all snow or all rain, ice sucks.
  20. Can we speak to any ice potential in NW NJ and surrounding areas up this way? My high is only supposed to reach 40 tomorrow morning, so any wobble in the track or entrapment of cold air could be hugely problematic, as I sit here recalling December 2019. It didn't impact a large area, but was crippling for those that it did, as ice accumulations were well beyond that which was forecasted.
  21. Low of -2 in Sparta, Sussex County this morning. It seems there are a lot of moving parts to this storm. Is there any thinking that the excessive cold air currently in place contributes to a more prolonged period of freezing rain/ice for my area? TWC shows my high at only 40 tomorrow morning before starting to come down again. That doesn't leave a ton of room for margin of error any where up this way, particularly in places where cold air can get trapped for a while.
  22. 2 in Sparta with a refreshing breeze. Those dewpoints are way down there this morning. We have the humidifier cranked way up. Having eczema is no fun on these kinds of days.
  23. Good radiational cooling tonight. I'm down to 5 up here in Sparta with no wind.
