    The energy star guidelines that came out this summer say that you should have it at 78 during the day, 82 at night, and 85 when you are away.     I’m not seeing anything like the past few days on the models. Maybe I’m blind but I see average to just below with some low dew days and some tropical dew days. But I am seeing more drier days than we have had. I don’t want to rush the pattern to autumn yet and want to enjoy some more summer. Each season for its own.

    Odd the weather channel is going for a below average month temperature wise for NYC and Boston in August. I think it will be just above average because of the cool start but warm to hot finish.

    This might be the first "historic" heatwave where I do not even hit 90 degrees. Just a few days ago I had a forecasted high of 92, 99, and 95. Yesterday was 89, forecast for today is 89 again, and tomorrow 87. Sunday through at least Wednesday looks like a late September pattern and that could extend.

    Damaged but not broken. It will come back multiple times between now and Christmas.

    I was outside working on my gutters and siding. It was hot but it wasn’t unbearable. With the clouds I felt fine. Then again I’m also the guy that goes for runs on vacation in Florida in August.

    Just had a big storm in Patterson. I have to say hearing the Mayor call this heat a matter of life and death was ridiculous. It is hot but it is not hotter than we typically get in a summer lately. It is hot and heat does kill but let’s not pile on hyperbole.

    No heatwave happening in Patterson, NY. Temps have been adjusted down. Today won’t get to the 90s. Maybe tomorrow.

    It’s also true that very few were actually calling for an ice age. That is a myth that has been perpetuated since the 70s. A Time article and a few other pieces but most studies showed warming.     “Cool shot” now is average based on the models I’m seeing. Days like today cannot be beat but ending just a hair below the average for the day.

    Oliver Stone. Roger Stone is a political consultant. Nuclear will make a great bridge fuel. As for biofuel we could do it with algae using diatoms. Some species can be up to 60% lipid which is oil. Very cool stuff because it burns like fossil oil and then recapture the CO2 to grow. Also switchgrass and ethanol production is not as easy as algae.

    There are plenty of studies about it. The birds being struck by wind turbines are a huge issue, but still more are killed each year by glass buildings and windows. As for batteries this is one I get a lot. Mining is rough on the environment for sure. But coal mining is even more damaging and since that is my background I can say that coal mining creating issues forever with acid mine drainage. At least with lithium and modern day recycling we can pretty much remanufacture a battery to near 100% battery health with minimal damage. Once you burn a mined or drilled fuel it is gone but the damage remains. I don’t think anyone wants to proceed with reckless abandon. The one thing that really terrified me though is the solar blocking studies. Too much can go wrong there especially since we don’t even know everything about our atmosphere and currents. Until we can predict the weather more than 3 days out with high accuracy I’d rather not mess with solar input.

    Agree. Nobody is giving up air travel, cars, boats, etc. but shockingly there are many against clean energy and renewables. I get it all the time in my field and don’t quite get it.

    I think it is going to be tough to break 95-100 for the same reason we don’t see 100s in Florida often. The humidity is ridiculously high, which does tend to limit the high temperatures. I am very confused though by people saying this summer is not “hot”. It has been a very warm July statistically. June was cooler than the new normals, but around average from total historic temps. I am always boggled as an environmental scientist when people claim humans have no impact on climate. I always explain to my students, look around. Go back 100 years and you were lucky to see people owning one car per family. Now look at the world. We have gone from 2.5 billion in 1950 to 8 billion today, and everyone uses petroleum. It has 100% improved our living conditions like nobody could have every predicted, but it does come at a cost. As for those against biofuels and renewables, I don’t understand at all. Clean energy is just smart and will be cheaper. Former Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said the main reason they invest in biofuels is because it would be amazing to control their own fuel and not have to hope a war won’t break out. And then he mentioned all the great environmental stats from it.

    I don’t know about real heat, but it would be nice to have a brief reprieve from the real dews!

    We’ve all been brainwashed into having pristine lawns of a non-native species. There are ways to conserve though. Cut the grass long and help it develop deeper roots. Also clover is truly not bad. It is great for pollinators and stays green even when things are dry.

    Yeah it is just crazy how such a short drive makes such a difference. Even through Putnam and Dutchess Counties.

    Whatever happened to the people saying this summer would be lucky to see 5-10 90 degree days? One thing I've learned lately is to never underestimate the torch! Also kind of weird to see so many on LI wanting more rain, whereas here in the Hudson Valley everything is still near or above flood stage. Pretty crazy driving around the past few days seeing roads washed out, like completely gone.

    They cover much more than LI. They cover all of the city, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Westchester, Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, New London, including northeast NJ. Orange and Rockland are in rough shape. Parts of the Palisades have been washed out.

    Got one gutter unclogged during the lull, but this is absolutely ridiculous. The older I get the more I enjoy winter. No yard work, minimal bugs, and no flooding rains. Oh and you can do one of life's greatest activities, skiing.
