December 2020 General Discussions & Observations Thread
LibertyBell replied to bluewave's topic in New York City Metro
Chris remember Dec 1995 when we had the mid Dec snowstorm and then it got very cold after that and the snowpack persisted through both Christmas and New Years and was even around for the Jan 1996 blizzard? We got the big melt a week or so after the big blizzard and we even had severe weather in Jan with temps in the mid and upper 60s with lots of flooding and the big Massapequa supermarket roof collapse! -

I still remember Mallow celebrating whenever a La Nina was forecast because he thought Seattle would be getting a ton of snow and the NE would get screwed lol. -

good I knew climate change had to have some positive effect and warming of both the Pacific and Atlantic seems to be it....killing off of the negative influence of la ninas in the Pacific and making noreaster precip bombs much more likely in the Atlantic are some good results for us weather enthusiasts. -

I thought it's supposed to rain Sunday and Monday? -
close to 8" in the Rockaways as thats what the total from Howard Beach was, cant find the PNS to see what the JFK or LGA totals were, but we had close to 8 here about 2 miles north of your former residence in Long Beach. Did you hit 10" in Huntington? I see you had a last late burst of snow that ended around 1 PM or 2?

in Jan 94 we had two arctic outbreaks that went to 0 or below, I remember there was one where we went from 0 for the low to 32 for the high at the next midnight and then a 55 high the next day as a screaming sou'easter blew through..... -

December 16-17, 2020 Storm Observations and Nowcast
LibertyBell replied to wdrag's topic in New York City Metro
why not just use the rainfall totals and apply a snowfall ratio to them depending on the temp and you can get an estimated snowfall total based on that? or you can use radar to estimate snowfall totals just like you can do with rainfall?- 1,011 replies

it was really good but not historic across long island.....J01232016 was historic across a wide swath of the region ;-)

I always point to that storm when people say that a storm cutting across Long Island cant be all snow here.

Not to mention that 2020 has a chance to be the warmest year on record globally. By the way, now you're going to be hardpressed to find anyone who doesn't agree that a snowless October-November is good for December snows (and perhaps winter as a whole), you and I have been discussing a possible mechanism for this and a reason why this may be and I tend to agree with your theory that the pattern needs some time to "recover and reload" after a wintry event so perhaps a late October or November event portends badly for December and perhaps for winter as a whole because of this. Remember it took us until mid February to recover enough from A11072012 to get to N02082013 on the east coast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_2012_nor'easter A mid-level shortwave over the Midwestern United States was moving eastward on November 6, just four days after Hurricane Sandy dissipated, toward a trough over the Southeastern United States, and into an area with abundant moisture and favorable conditions from the jet stream. The combination was favorable for a nor'easter to form,[3] and on November 7, a strong low pressure area developed along the coast of North Carolina.[4] At the time, there was an area of cold air inland the Mid-Atlantic States and New England that would allow the precipitation to fall as snow.[5] By November 8, the system drifting to the northeast, located about 90 mi (140 km) south-southeast of Boston, Massachusetts, with a front extending northeastward to Nova Scotia. Its large circulation dropped rain and snow across the northeastern United States.[6] Some areas within NYC, got close to a foot of snow across Western Long Island, including Eastern Queens County in a narrow snow band that set up because of the coastal front. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_February_2013_North_American_blizzard The Early February 2013 North American blizzard was a powerful blizzard that developed from the combination of two areas of low pressure,[5] primarily affecting the Northeastern United States and parts of Canada, causing heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds. The storm crossed the Atlantic Ocean, affecting Ireland and the United Kingdom.[6] The nor'easter's effects in the United States received a Category 3 rank on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale, classifying it as a "Major" Winter Storm. -
31 inches at JFK and 34 inches in Jackson Heights from J01232016 (according to my new naming system for these storms, J signifies the 10th winter storm warning event of the season nationwide, and the numbers signify the date of course), that storm was characterized by a large swath of 30+ totals west to east, including Allentown, PA and Morristown, NY all the way to JFK and Oceanside west to east. The other storm you are thinking of is N02082013 (N signifies it was the 14th winter storm warning storm of that season nationwide and I just looked up the date since I didn't remember it lol), this was the storm that dropped 40" across parts of coastal CT and 38" on eastern LI. There have been other 30"+ storms in that region but this was the biggest for them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_February_2013_North_American_blizzard The Early February 2013 North American blizzard was a powerful blizzard that developed from the combination of two areas of low pressure,[5] primarily affecting the Northeastern United States and parts of Canada, causing heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds. The storm crossed the Atlantic Ocean, affecting Ireland and the United Kingdom.[6] The nor'easter's effects in the United States received a Category 3 rank on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale, classifying it as a "Major" Winter Storm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2016_United_States_blizzard The January 2016 United States blizzard was a crippling and historic blizzard that produced up to 3 ft (91 cm) of snow in parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States from January 22–24, 2016. Evolving from a shortwave trough that formed in the Pacific Northwest on January 19, the system consolidated into a defined low-pressure area on January 21 over Texas. Regarding it as a "potentially historic blizzard", meteorologists indicated the storm could produce more than 2 ft (61 cm) of snow across a wide swath of the Mid-Atlantic region and could "paralyze the eastern third of the nation"
