Don, will NYC remain below last season's historic snowfall total even after this storm? What's the most snow we can get from this storm and still remain below last season's total? -

89-90 too, if you want to look for bad winters where DC did better. 65-66 which some used as an analog had 40" down by Norfolk VA while NYC saw half of that

It's interesting that 3-4" is still forecast up by Mt Pocono, it will probably match the last storm in snowfall amounts.

Maybe it's time to have a lower level of alert, let's call it "State of Preparedness"

They really should only issue it for south jersey if anywhere, but the whole idea of "state of emergency" should only be issued for something like Sandy. Maybe they need to have a lower level of alert? Did they ever think of that? And they could call it "State of Preparedness". Leave the "State of Emergency" only for historic and truly life threatening conditions.

it's also a weak storm with a very narrow area of precip correct? A more normal sized storm would easily get heavy snow into our area on that track

Yup, lots of problems on the roads. 6.5" I think.... the earliest 6" storm there on record I believe (here we had 8" on November 7, 2012 a week after Sandy, and 14" in Freehold.)

What a waste of cold air and moisture lol, the GFS kept saying we would get more than that-- meanwhile Toms River (50 miles south of here) got 2 feet of snow.

Yep and you know what else we can do-- stop using pesticides. We have the tech right now to use drones with onboard lasers to kill weeds without harming any other form of life at all. They're already started to deploy them but it should be happening more quickly.

we could still get what we got in that storm (and that was also a daytime storm). we got 1.5" on 2/6/2010 so that's possible again today Staten Island (at least the southern part of it) got up to 6" while NYC only saw a trace lol.

I'd love to see OES on the south shore of LI, it's only happened a few times in my life. We had 1.5" on 2/6/2010.

why is NJ so damn long? Sometimes I wish Long Island was east of Atlantic City lol, especially with storms like this.

I'm very close to the Brown 80% area, maybe just a few miles northeast of there lol, so let's say, 78% zone? I guess 2" is a good number for me also.

If El Nino's are supposed to be mild in December, what differentiates the exceptions like 2002-03 and 2009-10 which were quite wintry in December? Is it just about the Atlantic side blocking? If so, why do we consider el nino more important? We can eliminate the influence of el nino (outside of the stronger subtropical jet) and solely focus on Atlantic side blocking as the major component in colder weather, at least for us.

Lol and here the media is (specifically Lee Goldberg) saying we return to winter and cold weather by early February. Are we looking at sunny and mild? That's not bad at all-- ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN RAIN!

But thats happening anyway and the resulting sea level rise will be horrific I like the idea of creating a pump to constantly mix up the water, but the environmental issues (effect on sea life) that would cause probably wouldn't be good either.

I wouldn't mind a January like 2009 had. No major snow events but the entire month was cold, with minor 1-2 inch events once or twice a week the entire month and so cold that the snow cover lasted for most of the month too.
