  1. Is that why super hot summers are correlated to very snowy winters? I think so..... Those of you who hate super hot summers should remember that....
  2. The weird thing is I remember 1993 as super hot at JFK too-- do you remember that super heatwave in July? JFK exceeded 100+ on two straight days. That was the first year I used a/c lol. I remember that entire summer as hot all the way up to mid September. 90 degree heat from May until September! 2010 was definitely hotter than any other summer-- I wonder when we'll see a summer like that again?
  3. I love this because EWR clearly matches up closer to JFK than the heat island of LGA does. 1993, 2002 and 2010 are the hottest summers in my memory too. Going with pre 1990s heat, 1983 was the first summer that matches what we have going on now, do you agree, Chris? That was both extremely hot and extremely humid. Also, going even further back, what was going on in 1944? That was such an amazingly hot summer, seems really out of place back in the 1940s. It was an 11 year summer, which could of course be the reason. I wish I could experience that. And 1966. Those would be my two favorite summers to experience.
  4. Oh that's a shame, I think the airports all had July 2010 as the hottest. I remember July 1999 and that was extremely hot too (20 90 degree days that month, to tie July 1993 if I remember correctly), but July 2010 was a tick hotter than that. Did July 1955 hold the record before July 1999? I love these 11 year summers, it's too bad the pattern didn't hold last year.
  5. Weird.... one thing all those summers have in common is that they all had multiple 100+ degree days at the NYC airports? Newark having 25 days of 95+ and 10 days of 100+ in 1993 if I remember correctly is absolutely mindboggling. They had 5 in a row in July, while we had 3 in the city. That still remains the greatest heatwave of my entire life.
  6. There really is no such thing as "average" or "normal" as that always keeps changing. Why don't we just go decade by decade and show them how each decade has been warmer than the previous one? We need to stop using averages and normals when those no longer apply because of how quickly the climate is changing. I think expressing it as decade over decade changes is much easier.
  7. I see such sociopathic behavior from various cartels-- not just fossil fuels, but logging (deforestation), the chemical cartels, various farming cartels (animal farming, big ag, etc.), basically humanity screwing up the environment for short term gains, resulting in long term losses. I see an "everyone for themselves" kind of situation developing where society divides into various factions because of these different emergencies coming to a head all at the same time. Like you said, the mass extinction event is already happening and has been for a few decades, but as more people realize what's going on, they will (and already have) divided into different factions and society becomes much more divisive....like a panic driven reaction, as they are looking to do whatever it takes to save themselves rather than face the hard decisions that need to be made in order to save society and the planet.
  8. and a lot of tropical activity. July 1955 set the average monthly temp record at NYC until July 2010 came along
  9. 1977 had authentic blazing heat though, rather than just high min days The good old 11 year pattern!
  10. For JFK it's 2010 bar none..... 10 days of 95+ and 3 days of 100+ Is that the record year for the other airports too?
  11. It makes it very yucky and humid, Friday was disappointing, not much sun at all, I guess that was a bust.
  12. why has the skill continued to be so low at this range? It's disappointing how little advancement we've seen over the past 20 years in medium to long range forecasting
  13. and a new mass extinction event on a much shorter timeframe than previous ones
  14. This actually reminds me of years when we have snowstorms in November and it takes awhile for the pattern to reload after that and December is nearly snowless lol. Usually we end up with a below average snowfall season but sometimes we luck out and end up with a winter at or even above normal snowfall like 2012-13. The snow came back two months later...the analogy in this case would be heat coming back in August (hopefully it happens in July which is our peak heating month and when we have the highest chances of hitting 100.)
  15. Wow- there are some hot summers in that list with prolonged heatwaves! What happened in May 1996 that it didn't hit 90 again until the last day of August? Also, how does the peak heat from yesterday compare at JFK vs what happened in 1996? They were similar from what I recall, maybe yesterday was even a little hotter than how hot it got in May 1996.
  16. Hey Chris does this resemble what happened in 1996? Didn't we go into a cool, humid and wet pattern after the May 1996 scorcher then too? Most of the summer lacked 90 degree heat. Also, specifically for JFK how does the peak May heat of yesterday compare to the peak May heat in 1996? I'm using the same weather equipment I had then and I think it was actually hotter yesterday than it was in May 1996. Something else which is interesting-- why is it that we've seen more extreme heat in April than in May? It seems like the April max of 96-97 in 2002 and the heatwave we had that month hasn't really been exceeded in May. You'd think that with a temperature that high in April we would hit 100 in either May or June, but it seems like extreme heat stabilizes in the upper 90s until we hit July. I wonder why that is?
  17. Is there a way to compare this to the peak heat of May 1996? I have the same weather station I had back then and the temperature I recorded yesterday was slightly hotter than the peak heat in that historic month.
  18. I beg to differ on these hot streaks though. The only really hot summers in the 00s were 2002 (my favorite) and 2005 (not as great for us on the coast.) Then we had to wait for 2010 to have our all time summer and 2011 was great in July, but just that month. 2012 and 2013 were good for hitting 100 but not historic like 2010 was. Question.... why are 1991 and 1993 only listed as barely above 1 degree above normal? Those were historic summers with record numbers of 90 degree days and multiple 100 degree days! Is this because of the min temp? That's why I believe that heat should not be judged by min temps....it should only include high temps and the number of 90 degree days-- that's pure heat, while mins just indicate humidity.
  19. They're warm but not really hot like 2010. Days like today are what I expect and want from climate change, not mediocre "high" temps and swampy humidity. I also want extended superheatwaves 7+ days above 90 (why dont we have heatwaves like that anymore?) and multiple widespread days of 100+
  20. I'm not I only like days like today-- what I expect and want from climate change, I hope we have many more days like today all summer, but 100+ everywhere including here on the south shore!
  21. annoying because that makes the heat mediocre and the humidity high, hopefully it's a strong westerly wind all summer so more days like today, just hotter
  22. No every day better be just like today but 100+
  23. 96 here, basically the perfect day This is what I want and expect from climate change. I hope we have this all summer, just add a few more degrees to make it triple digits everywhere!
  24. I wish we could invent a device to destroy them
