    COVID-19 Talk

The Arizona idea is wacky. Not sure if they scrapped that or not. Would have to play games with start times at like 7am and then again later in the evening to avoid the blistering heat. If we are destined to get back to some semblance of normalcy by early summer, maybe they just play a shortened season in regular ballparks with no fans. Regular testing probably wont be an issue for big time sports athletes.

There will not be a grand opening. My best "guess" as to how this plays out in general: by June 1, most of the stay at home orders will be lifted, non-essential businesses will be permitted to re-open, with strong recommendations for continuation of social distancing/use of masks. Bars and restaurants, fitness centers/gyms- it will vary from place to place, but they will gradually be opening up through June, likely with some limitations for a period of time. I imagine the NFL will find a way to make the season happen, maybe shortened and with no or a limited amount of fans in attendance. I have given up on the idea that widespread testing will be available, as this administration shows little interest in committing to make it happen. So we likely get to see how things go in the weeks/months that follow with continued limited testing/contact tracing. Let nature take its course! Hopefully we have some big ass early summer heat wave, and maybe that will help suppress it. I might be completely wrong on all of this, but given the more optimistic projections and the economic hardship imposed on many, it is difficult to imagine keeping things "locked" down into mid summer.

Wide open? Doubt it. I have repeatedly said I believe when many of the stay at home orders(not lock downs, as they don't exist here) expire mid May, we will likely be moving in steps back towards "open for business'. Yeah some of the red states will begin that process sooner. Already happening to some degree.

Not arguing your general point, but you tend to go binary when it's convenient. COVID can also be very problematic for a significant group of people in their 50s and 60s. There are plenty of middle aged people in this country who don't eat well/ are overweight/ have bad genes, that predispose them to (known) cardiovascular issues, and for whom the fear of catching COVID will not overwhelm their basic desire to stay alive.

Ok. Point taken. Not sure that is something that would overwhelm the data though. Plenty of "younger" people are at risk due to lifestyle and/or heredity, and not sure this applies in many of those cases.

Hard to believe someone with chest pains, esp if they have a known underlying heart condition, would just ignore it because of COVID. Self preservation is a thing.

  10. A bit dated but I just saw this. The shot I took above is looking towards Baltimore corner, where it touched down. My thought at the time was most likely a rain shaft, but that was probably the location of the tornado as well. Regular season is unwatchable, but yes the playoffs and esp the finals are entertaining.

A lot of the stay at home orders expire May 15, I believe. If the latest projections are correct, it would make sense to begin to relax things (outside of known hot spots) at that point. The biggest issue will be getting people back to work in cases where they are required to be in close proximity, and/or depend on public transportation. If the current lack of available and efficient testing/appropriate PPE is somehow resolved, then it should be possible to execute a 'reopening' in stages. Remains to be seen ofc.

This becomes a bigger "issue" as the weather warms. The way things are looking, it shouldn't be a problem in many places over the next month or so. Small gatherings outside around the pool will go on regardless.

People are outdoors and if they are staying in groups of a few and moving along it would seem to be low risk. Problem is where it goes from there. People tend to get 'too comfortable' at some point. Adequate enforcement is key.
  19. Wind picking up with the back edge of showers moving through. Rain didn't about to much here- less than a tenth. Maybe I can get some mowing done this afternoon.
  20. Nice sized wild turkey roaming around out back this morning. Is there a meat shortage?

Expect to see more of this in places that 'rush' to get back to normal. The availability of fast testing is still somehow elusive, and it's the SoS at the federal level. Pence says the testing capacity is there to reopen. Okay.
  22. Put on your PPE and make a beer run!
