My dad always said everything is driven by the price of oil. He was an HVAC tech for 30+ years (it was called oil burner service man when he started) and his observation was that every time the coat of oil went up, so did the price of wood. Unless you can cut your own, the price of a cord will increase too.

While researching for the insert, all the info I gathered indicated the only fuel source less expensive than piped natural gas (on a per BTU delivered inside the envelope), was wood you cut yourself. Shortly after moving to Maine in 1973, I read that more than half the world's people used wood as a heat source, and I thought that to be sort of quaint. At our NNJ home in NNJ, we had a fireplace, but it was more for atmosphere than heat. We moved from a Fort Kent apartment to our first house (tiny 2-story) in mid-May 1977 and couldn't wait to add a woodstove. I'd installed a Jotul 602 the day before the move. We've run woodstoves as a major heat source ever since - no chimney fires (yet).

He retired a couple years ago so lost the deal.

It takes a certain breed to be able to deal with these cases and even then there are just cases like this that break anyone. My heart broke the day when this all brought to the forefront. Yeah, she did this but there could be case studies done as to what brought this woman to do what she did. She’s not the first we’ve seen do this either. We need to take a hard look at these cases as see what it is that triggers these.
