2002 was hotter than 1983 for the areas despite not reaching 100.  Plenty of 97,98, 99's for the city and elsewhere.  A degree.

That was one of my top summers too however not as many 90 degree days as 1983.

1983, 2002, 2010 are my top 90 degree day summers (the only ones with 20 or more 90 degree days).

Yeah, we would get smaller Canadian wildfires back in those days. We even had smoke in the late 80s from wildfires in the Appalachians.

But the Canadian wildfires have been at record levels since 2023. June 6-8, 2023 was a first for our area having such thick smoke. A recent study found that the smoke dropped our temperatures by 5°F.

https://www.rmets.org/metmatters/worst-air-quality-world-wildfire-smog-smothers-new-york

The Wednesday morning air quality was bad. The day began in the “red” with AQIs in the 151-200 range. An AQI in that range has only occurred a handful of times in the last few decades in the city. Still, New Yorkers tried to continue with their daily routine activities. By late Wednesday morning, the grey blob as seen from the ABI visible band on GOES satellite, showed the highest concentration of smoke flowing across Lake Ontario, Upstate New York and into the City region. Shortly after, the skies went dark over the city by 2pm, and air quality continued to worsen through the evening.

The AQI was above 480 on Wednesday evening in NYC, technically off the chart. NYC’s air quality was quickly compared to large cities in India and China known for their chronic pollution. At that point, New York City had the worst air quality in the world. The pollution was bad enough to cancel outdoor after-school activities for the 1.1 million students in the largest public school system in the country, and prompt a shift to remote learning for the following days.

why doesn't Canada do something about it-- be proactive and clear out some of these forests.

I see in the US we're now replacing highly flammable trees with less flammable ones.

There's no managing the vast wilderness that are the Canadian boreal forests.

They are not only massive but basically depopulated of people.

tree replacement with less flammable ones is necessary.

you can manage any forest with enough effort, look at how the farmers are burning down the Amazon and thats much larger than anything Canada has.

This is going to be the best August weather we have seen in years. Very impressive Canadian high pressure will dominate. The easterly flow will keep the temperatures comfortable for this time of year with a break in the record heat that we experienced from late June through July. The high pressure will keep most of the rain to our south.

this is basically a polar high bringing in cool Canadian air?

the problem is it will also bring in the smoke from the north

Bro this cannot be fixed by forest management. The forest doesn't need managing in the middle of nowhere.

What did forests do before people showed up?

The only managing that should be done is near homes and power lines.

Expanded data back to 2010 - looks like Mon, Tue then 8/10 and beyond could add to those - no strong heat (95+) but do see plenty of 88 - 91 days through the 13/14th before perhaps more sustained warmth / heat towards the middle , second half of august.  EWR can get there with a N/NNE/E with right amount of sun.

Tony, how many did the mighty 1993 have?

59 last night. New location doesn’t radiate well at all. Not sure why that is. Maybe being on top of a hill?

Probably.

55° down here.

Last 2 mornings great viewing of Venus and Jupiter as they are now at 9 degrees apart as they head toward their closest conjunction on the 12th when they will be < 1 degree apart.

I think someone earlier said that many of these fires are human caused.

I mean they are in terms of climate change, but I think he was talking about people intentionally setting fires.

I wish this weather would last through the Perseid meteor shower, moon or no moon (there was a beautiful half moon last night).

I don't think anyone is setting fires on purpose in the middle of nowhere of central Canada.

There are definitely fires set on purpose or through negligence obviously, I just don't think this is the case.

Isn't it just lightning igniting the fires?

I was talking about this early part of the month right in front of us. It will get warmer again once the big high pressure shifts off the east coast in mid-August. So my guess is that August will finish with above average temperatures. But probably not the kind of heat like we had in July where the whole month averaged 80°+ like many stations did in July.

Probably.  I think the intentional or accidental human fire starting happens in California more than it does in Canada.  Remember the Camp Fire-- I think that one happened because someone shot off fireworks during a gender reveal party.

Why do we even need gender reveal parties? Male/Female big deal.....

For strong heat (95+) 2002 was tied (edit thought it was 6 in 83)

I'm shocked that 1963 is number two, that didn't even register to me as a hot summer, were there any 100 degree days that year Tony?

the 4 in 1993 I think all happened in a row (two in a row of 100+ too).

Some of these fires have been burning for a few years now.
