NorthArlington101
After some showers, it has gotten 99% clear skies here. Let's hope this holds for the next 6 hours.Looking at satellite it looks like more clouds will be coming, but think even DC should clear up for at least a bit. Would be a nice surprise, especially if the timing mentioned earlier is right.

NorthArlington101
I saw the they are predicting midday tomorrow UTC, which is 7am tomorrow morning. So 3 am - 5 am might be a good time to look.I’d set an alarm for 4am, assess, and drive if needed. Might be clear by then anyway.

WVclimo
Clear as a bell here now after a heavy rain earlier. Stayed socked in all night last night so hoping for a repeat.
NorthArlington101
I think I got a better picture of the “aurora” today than I did yesterday lol Honestly… aurora is epic. Very cool because of scarcity. But on pure “what my eyeballs can see” the rainbow is cooler. If both were equally rare, I’d take the rainbow.
NorthArlington101
Quick read of Twitter suggests we aren’t gonna see anything come sunset… Bz is hovering around zero. Need that to change dramatically… which it can, but nothing yet.
CasualObserver
We drove 2.5 hours to Reddish Knob in GW National Forest hoping for the best. We have our dog and snacks so we're prepared to wait it out a bit.

NorthArlington101
2 minutes ago, SomeguyfromTakomaPark said: What is bz and where do u track it From Google: Quote The interplanetary magnetic field is a vector quantity with a three axis component, two of which (Bx and By) are orientated parallel to the ecliptic. The Bx and By components are not important for auroral activity and are therefor not featured on our website. The third component, the Bz value is perpendicular to the ecliptic and is created by waves and other disturbances in the solar wind. The north-south direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz) is the most important ingredient for auroral activity. When the north-south direction (Bz) of the the interplanetary magnetic field is orientated southward, it will connect with Earth’s magnetosphere which points northward. You can see bZ here. Right now it's fallen to -5... IIRC it was -50-ish last night.https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/auroral-activity.html

baltosquid
Forecast picking back up. Mostly cloudy here, can actually see the moon and some stars through a patch of sky but not placed where I can see the north horizon. Hopefully continues to strengthen. NorthArlington101
Seems like folks are seeing it in Michigan - hopefully the action is better for us pre-dawn or tomorrow night. The storms rolling in obviously won’t help though.

I don't know how that's possible. Bz is -4.28 and kp is only 6. We aren't seeing anything at Reddish Knob.

I don’t know, but it’s local news reporters and not randos, so I’m assuming they aren’t lying. I’m surprised to see the ob myself.
baltosquid
Tonight might end up more of a long-exposure, horizon based photography thing in low-light pollution areas - CME does seem to have had an impact based on the auroral oval forecast (and it got a tad stronger last update as well) but it doesn't look close to last night. Hopefully tomorrow is better, seems like it will at least provide a better chance of clear (enough) skies!!
NorthArlington101
Set an alarm for 4:00am with the full expectation that it’s a waste of time. But if it’s not, maybe I’m the only photographer who gets the elusive Capitol + aurora shot!
