Upstate NY Late Season Snow Potential

Recommended Posts

Don't look now...but the last two runs of the NAM have put out a generous 0.75-1" of QPF, mostly snow, for early Saturday morning centered along the NYS Thruway. Euro had a much weaker system in terms of QPF but potentially cold enough to support flakes for what does fall. Same goes for the GFS.

I wouldn't buy into the NAM at this point...it was pretty bad this year...although it did really well with the leap day event and thermal profiles were pretty good throughout the winter.

Right now I think just some flakes possible, but potential is there for a light to moderate event, especially in the typical sweet spots.

The NAM just shifted well south on the 12Z run. What a surprise... LOL

Am I shovelling at 1150 ft down in Monroe on Sat? it would figure that I would wind up with almost twice as much as up in Queensbury......where my snow blower resides.

Monroe seems to be shaping up to be a bit of a sweet spot.Portions of the Catskills and Poconos should manage 2-4" easily. Likely mostly some flakes for those of us in the valley...but I could see a light coating for some though if this thing doesn't pull a complete whiff.

I was only about 8 miles or so northwest of Monroe today near Chester, among other places for work. Balmy day down there ...but I guess things can change fast with the cold air aloft and some dynamics.

As to here ...36 at midnight and heavy virga underway. LOL ..but eventually it should start as snow and accumulate a bit.

.5" or so.... still a light fine snow filtering down though and 30.2F. The best stuff must have gone through the southern/central Catskills.

Last night I decided to take the "western" route home from Goshen....up 17 to Roscoe and then 206 to 30 and all the way north to my neighborhood up here. That area toward Roscoe probably did pretty good.

You did a lot better than me. It's white here, but similar to Logan11 at <.5".

Crappy rainy day turned into a nice snowy wintry day around 3:30. It has snowed hard at times since then but has had trouble sticking but the grass is starting to turn white.

Seems to be quite elevation-dependent. Friends in Bovina at 2000+ reported snow earlier -- but not down here at 1500'.

Now it is snowing nicely with large, composite flakes.

Snow all day here with leftovers from yesterday still on the ground.

That is so funny because it started out as a little snow/sleet around 1:30 in Andes but then went over to rain. I left at 2:30, but when I got to the highest elevation on 206 there were flakes mixed in. When I got to NJ to have Palm Sunday dinner with family, up in the "high" areas of Bergen it almost seemed like it was about to mix, and I had wondered about what was happening Upstate. So it did turn back over...interesting...I thought it was only getting warmer. Regardless, the precip. all the way back was very heavy, which, of course, makes it easier to support snow.

Postscript on Saturday's event....

The southern Catskills got the most ...if you want to call 3 inches a lot.

The Slide Mountain obs isn't literally at the summit. The summit is a good 1500 ft higher and probably got more. That's a great hike I would recommend. It's a good trail and gradual enough that most people in reasonable shape can do it.
