Aaaaaanyway back to weather....

The Euro is showing the potential for a few flurries early Thanksgiving morning with the ULL piece of Wednesday's frontal passage coastal blob thing. A few hundredths at best, and 2m temps are iffy. But 850's are definitely cold enough...-6 to -8 at 6z then around -6 at 12z. Maybe a repeat of Turkey Day 2010?

There's been more than one Euro run that has had this.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FAIRBANKS AK

1254 AM AKST SUN NOV 20 2011

...THE RECORD COLD CONTINUES AT FAIRBANKS...

THE COLD SNAP CONTINUES TO RE-WRITE THE RECORD BOOKS AT

FAIRBANKS. THE CURRENT COLD SNAP IS ONE OF THE MOST SEVERE ON

RECORD FOR SO EARLY IN THE WINTER SEASON. HAD THE COLD SNAP

OCCURRED IN DECEMBER...JANUARY...OR EVEN TOWARD THE VERY END OF

NOVEMBER IT WOULD NOT BE AT ALL UNUSUAL. WHAT MAKES THIS COLD

SNAP MORE UNIQUE IS THAT IT OCCURRED THE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING.

SATURDAY WAS YET ANOTHER RECORD SETTING DAY AT FAIRBANKS. THE

HIGH OF 23 BELOW AT THE AIRPORT WAS ANOTHER RECORD LOW MAXIMUM

TEMPERATURE. THE OLD RECORD OF 22 BELOW WAS ESTABLISHED WAY BACK

IN 1911. THE LOW OF 36 BELOW BROKE THE RECORD OF 33 BELOW FROM

1969.

SATURDAY MARKED THE 5TH CONSECUTIVE DAY WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE OF

30 BELOW OR COLDER AT THE AIRPORT. THIS TIES WITH 1956...1969 AND

1989 FOR THE MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH A TEMPERATURE OF 30 BELOW

OR COLDER SO EARLY IN THE WINTER SEASON.

THE LOW TEMPERATURE HAS NOW BEEN 35 BELOW OR COLDER EACH OF THE

LAST 5 DAYS. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE SO EARLY IN THE

WINTER SEASON AT FAIRBANKS. THE OLD RECORD WAS ONLY 2 DAYS...AND

WAS LAST RECORDED IN 1989.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE HAS NOW BEEN 20 BELOW OR COLDER EACH OF THE

LAST 4 DAYS. THIS BREAKS THE RECORD OF 3 DAYS IN 1989 FOR THE

MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 20 BELOW OR

COLDER SO EARLY IN THE WINTER SEASON.

TEMPERATURES THIS WEEK ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN WELL BELOW NORMAL.

A COLD LOW WILL DROP OUT OF THE ARCTIC AND INTO THE WESTERN

INTERIOR MONDAY AND INTO THE GULF OF ALASKA TUESDAY. THE AIRMASS

ALOFT WILL BE COLDER THAN THE AIRMASS CURRENTLY ACROSS THE

INTERIOR. HOWEVER...THERE IS FAIRLY HIGH CONFIDENCE THAT THE NEXT

PUSH OF COLD AIR WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY CLOUDS AND FLURRIES. THE

CLOUDS WILL ACT AS AN INSULATOR AND KEEP TEMPERATURES SOMEWHAT

WARMER THAN THIS PAST WEEK. TEMPERATURES MUCH OF NEXT WEEK ARE

EXPECTED TO BE IN A RANGE OF 10 TO 25 BELOW. THERE WILL LIKELY BE

LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN THE TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK BETWEEN THE HILLS

AND VALLEYS AS THE CLOUDS AND DEPTH OF THE COLD AIR WILL PREVENT

MUCH OF A LOW LEVEL INVERSION FROM FORMING.

What would get to me more would be the four to five hours of daylight during the winter. We just crossed the Christmas Bridge today, the sun sets later on Christmas afternoon than it does today.

Central Alaska is pretty neat. I visited in July and temperatures were around 70. It's actually somewhat dry up there. It's interesting to look at their normal temperatures. Average highs drop 5-6 degrees per week starting in October. The normal high on 10/1 is 45. By 11/1, the normal high is 18. It's also possible to see 80s and 90s in the summer. The rule in Fairbanks is that they close schools when temperatures reach 50 below. Something about the integrity of the metals used to build the school busses.

The southern end of Alaska is less extreme, but receives much more snow. You can see leftover snow up in the Chugach mountains throughout the summer.

What would get to me more would be the four to five hours of daylight during the winter. We just crossed the Christmas Bridge today, the sun sets later on Christmas afternoon than it does today.

I visited Alaska in July two summers ago. Started in Juneau, then Anchorage and Seward, then up to Denali and Fairbanks. Even drove to the beginning of the Dalton Highway (most rental cars are expressly forbidden to be driven on the Dalton). Anyway, here's some pictures from my trip...

Yes. The darkness would get me too. I don't even like how little daylight there is here during the Nov-Mar time frame.

I was there last winter (end of december) and asked them the same question.

I got the typical answer of: "We are just used to it"

Kind of like dewpoints in the upper 70's during the summer here, i guess. (minus the freeing your b**** off)

I suppose if you are born and raised in that kind of climate you would be used to it. I (and most folks here) know that I'm a summer, warm weather person, but still, while uncomfortable, I think a 90/70 day has to be more tolerable than a brutally cold -30 day.

I have to think that the human body's natural adaptation is to favor warmer climes rather than cold, just thinking about our origins. I mean, being exposed in -30 will kill you. Being exposed in 90/70 won't (probably).

That was pretty much the article in the science section of the Inquirer today that we came from the tropics. Even at PHL's latitude there isn't enough sunshine in the winter to help us produce sufficient amounts of Vitamin D.
