SmokeEater
Every other large building in the area besides the hospital is just gone. Looking at the street map on satellite its about 4000 ft N-S from 20th to 32nd streets. Heard both those roads mentioned in damage reports. What other medical facilities does Joplin have, Have doubts whether St. John has the capabities to handle a lot of injuries as they got hit directly. EDIT: very concerned about lack of significant warning time with this storm as well. They didnt have 20-30 minutes warning here... What we can't see from the ground, the roof is off of the hospital. I doubt they can take any injuries at this point.

CT Rain
Not to derail this thread but the wx channel stream online and some on the air is bordering on inappropriate IMO. The damage pics are unreal. Hope most people were able to make it to shelter before the tornado hit.

southmdwatcher
How much lead time of a warning did Joplin get, was this a confirmed tornado prior to Joplin? This sounds as if it hit them with little notice and or rain-wrapped. The images from TWC are definitely bordering on inappropriate.

NaoPos
Do hospitals typically have cyrogenics tanks? Liquid oxygen or nitrogen? Absolutely. Pre planning our local hospital, there's always reserve O2 tanks and such in case of emergencys. he building smoking with white smoke is either steam or blowff pressurre. 02 and NItrogen are extremely cold under liquid state, so steam could the case. Not good if it's exposed like that though. It's a seprate building which is good. Can't hear the "hissing" noise indicitive of blowoff, so hard to say. NaoPos
Mike B, hate or like him, is doing his Job. Alerting the public to the devastation ongoing. He's better off getting the footage, than trying to crawl into a collapsed home. Although, with the lack of responders, its a tough call. I know i;d want anybody and everybody looking at me. Crying on air now*...
