Sucks for the ski resorts.  They had such good conditions last weekend.  They can deal with warm but 5 inches of rain is tough.

Yeah.  Drove by Sapphire Valley yesterday on a tour of local waterfalls.  It was rather pathetic-looking.  There may not be any snow left at all after today's torrents.

Dry falls on the Cullasaja River was rip-rouring, though:

  2. Honestly, I think since 2010, this has been one of my better decades for winter storms. Two 12" events, several 6"+ events, first white christmas. Anyone who thinks these last few winters have been bad didnt live through 1988-1989 until March 1993 around here.
BullCity (AKA QueenCity), I'm pretty confident this has been your only decade since 2010, so I don't think anyone can argue with your statement.

Went up to the AT on Big Bald after work. Easily over 2" up there with huge flakes flying. It's been snowing for 24 hours now and still going. 35200611d1480749f721dca7292ecffb.jpg&key=11207e56f14dd84c8cdf5ab1ebae58a2ac644d1c3feb0d0d401a5ed0e25cec7f1371a8e738bd170db9d1ce840cf0994e.jpg&key=b5e4e0b8da5bf3cc904c7e7e885f314cdf90a268c693d325508db1471b0c6320

Beautiful pics, Buckethead.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm quite jealous.

Saw a few flurries today at the intersection of I-40 and I-26, but that's the extent of my my winter weather observations so far for this winter.

  4. Crazy little storm cell on the extreme NW of this rainfall passed right over my house this morning around 4:30 AM. Five brilliant strikes of lightning, each rolled by rumbles of thunder so loud that the house shook. Then, the rain. 0.51 inch in ten minutes! It seemed tropical in it's intensity. Then it was all over. No more rain for us overnight as the axis of precipitation seems oriented in a training fashion from SW to NE just to our south.

Today's forecast for Fairbanks, AK. Can you imagine.

    Thursday

Patchy ice fog. Sunny, with a high near -41. Wind chill values as low as -65. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Ice fog?!  Fortunately, it's only "patchy".  Can you drive through a fog of ice?  Does it hurt to walk into it?  Is it penetrable? :D

    Just. Crazy. Cold. Amazing.

Edit:  I just checked their forecast on NWS too.  It adds the phrase, "Sunny".  Can you actually use that phrase when there are less than 5 hours of "daytime" and the sun will be very low on the horizon?  The ice fog may actually obscure it.

Edit 2:  Reading their AFD is just unreal.  Check this out:  "For the Fairbanks areas, near power plants, some industrial flurries may occur as the atmosphere wrings out the moisture in the power plant plumes."  Industrial flurries!  I don't think you should make snow cream with that snow.

  7. Thanks for updates. Any chance us poor folks in Southern NC can get in game. Looks huge for nothern N.C. and Southern Va
There is no game at this point. No one is in. There might be a scrimmage next week, but we're not even sure we have enough to field a team.
