  1. Another 0.91 inch of rain today. Maybe more tonight? Unsure. Up to 15.53 inches for the month of August. Just need 4.5 inches more over the next ten days to make it to 20. That's doable. Right? Tropical storms in the mix for next week...

Well, the latter portion of the month of August was much drier IMBY. Gonna round out the month with 16.43 inches of total rainfall unless I get any rogue sprinkles in the next hour. Still very impressive but not quite historic.

  2. Had summer thunderstorm number 100 today with .72 in the gauge (6.8 for the month). Think we can get to 10 inches for the month, maybe a lot more with tropical trouble
Yeah, I'm up to 14.11 inches for the month. Can I break 20? Never done that before. I think 17 is my previous max for one month. Oh, yeah, it's raining...

  3. Almost another inch of rainfall today from a thin line of storms. (0.97 inch to be exact.) The rainfall is truly prolific this year! Just amazing! Drought? What's a drought? I think I live in a swamp now.

  4. Really bad photo (lighting was horrific), but you can see the whirlpool and suction created when I finally got some clearance on the drain. I then had to man that spot for a couple of hours to keep it free from debris. Otherwise, all that water goes across the road, down my driveway, and right at my house, putting incredible pressure on my basement wall. I'm gonna have to talk to the city and see what they could do to alleviate this situation, if anything.

New drainage system with dial sump pumps was still working hard to combat the water.

Nice respite so far today, but I expect the rain to pick up again soon.

  5. Yep, it was crazy. Started raining around 8:00 PM lat night. Picked up 2 inches by 1 AM. Then, it really began to rain. Picked up another 6 inches by 3 AM. Just torrential buckets of rainfall. I have now recorded 8.93 inches of rainfall since it started last night. 8.93?!?!

I was outside with a metal rake and wading boots for the 1-3 AM timeframe, fighting to keep a storm drain clear so my basement wouldn't flood again. With a new interior drainage system and by God's grace, we remain dry inside.

  6. Lots of rain IMBY last night - over 1.3 inches.

Tonight is a repeat.  The heaviest rain has been all around us, but still another decent amount.  The rain this year has been prolific.

It's the beginning of August, and I'm only 3-4 inches off my average yearly total for this location.

  7. Really strange evening on the storm front:

Storm blew up right over my house around 8:30.  Radar returns showed bright yellows over me, and yet not a drop fell from the skies.  Then, as I was falling asleep around 10:30, I was rattled back awake by loud cracks of thunder, as another storm had developed over me.  This one dropped a little over a tenth of inch.  Finally, I was awakened around 1:00 AM, with very heavy rain, lightning, and thunder for another 0.68 inch of rain.

Typically, the storm activity diminishes as the evening wears on, but last night it seemed to do the exact opposite and get stronger as the hours passed.  Weird.

  8. Pretty rainy the past couple of days here in Hickory, and the rain chances remain fairly high for the remainder of the week. I received over half an inch of rainfall on Sunday and over 1.5 inches on Monday IMBY. Rain chances from NWS GSP for my area are 70% or greater for three out of the next four days. The humidity is high...

  9. Made my first trip to Wiseman's View last night. Watched an impressive storm blow up near Charlotte. Had a great sunset and afer dark wasn't bad either. We even saw a weird glowing area on the gorge floor with no infrared signature.

    That place is great!79061d8d72ce8e44976a5ad0993f3fb3.jpg&key=8d33229c7655a2eaa4308ddb5f8b4561aeabcf90927eca8752d86185a716333253b1f6c5817091b5136627352aea68ec.jpg&key=b400fe093a7d6cd9d008ff57427bd0e855502fe5210acab9f3d289c4310825d53c0b36cdb4a7a8ca7d201eab40c7a807.jpg&key=ff0e7f06c741f7b1c9224e36146ec1e0c2d04d5a375e435538498f8a696229d6

    Amazing pics!

I agree with Tyler. The Gorge has amazing hikes. I once camped on the western rim (Wiseman's side) just before Christmas. Crazy cold, but what an adventure!

On the eastern rim you can combine a lot of the peaks into the same hike (e.g., Table Rock, Hawksbill, and Sitting Bear). You can also hike up Shortoff from the base near Lake James and ridge walk over to Table Rock. It's quite exposed to the sun as you hike up, but once up on top it is almost level for quite a ways.

I'm currently on my way back from Rocky Mountain NP. Lots of amazing hikes over the past two weeks. Those mountains are so different from our own, but each are beautiful in their own ways.

  10. High of 58 IMBY. On June 16! Just. Wow.

Also, over 2 inches of rainfall today too. That was quite the busted NWS forecast of 0.25-0.50 for the day. The rain and drizzle continues even now...

  11. Got a pretty cool shot of an overshooting top with some bolts over near Greensboro last night. Saw some other stuff too...no clue what as to what it was though.

Loved that first shot, in particular. The yellow flowers with the storm in the distance made for a nice contrast.

  12. After an NWS spot forecast this morning for less than a tenth of an inch of rainfall today here in north Hickory, the rain from TS Bertha is slowly winding down and almost out of here.  My gauge has measured 2.45 inches so far.  Now, that's a busted forecast.  :D

  13. Wow! Those are some impressive numbers you guys are reporting so far. Still hovering around 2.25 inches for the event here IMBY in Hickory and have been in a lull all morning. Seems kind of low for the WPC's original outlook of 5-7 inches for the Hickory area. Of course, there is still a lot more potential in the next 48 hours. I love these cool May temperatures, though. I will be wishing greatly for them come July.

2.69 down south of you. Got nailed last night as we had 1.19 at 11pm.

Wow!  That's a two-inch difference in only a few short miles.  I don't guess we have any chance of seeing the sun until Friday, at the earliest.  Cool, rainy, cloudy weather for several days.  I can't complain too much for mid-May.
