I miss a good ice storm from the 80's.  You'd go to school with a forecast of rain and 38, and you'd get sent home mid-morning with rain and 28.  Models and forecasters didn't have a dam clue on how to handle cold air damming.

I remember those days, too, Grit.  The 1980s were a great decade for winter weather for those that lived in the shadow of the Apps.  (I was in Lenoir then.)

  2. After 9 winters in Boone this winter will take place in Hickory, just a few miles from the airport to be exact. Non scientific but I will say that the foothills are over due for a big ice storm and several have happened in early to mid December.

Welcome to the lowlands, Nelson. Not quite as snowy as Boone, by a longshot. But, I hope to see some nice aerials if and when we do get winter precipitation.

  3. Another month with over 10 inches of rainfall IMBY.  That brings my total to just shy of 95 inches!  95!  I can't really grasp the magnitude of that number.  Crazy.

I'm hoping the wet trend can continue through the winter and match up nicely with some cold air...

  4. I finished with 8.03 inches between last night and this morning!  Crazy.  The big wet 2020 continues.

Now at 91.99 inches IMBY since January 1, which is 41.86 inches ahead of pace on my 8-year annual average of 57.72 inches at this house.  We still have more than 1.5 months to go in this calendar year...

Can I change my screen name to @Rainforrest?  Oh.  Wait.  We already have one of those.  :D

  5. Just insane amounts of rainfall again overnight. 2.81 inches yesterday. More than 4.5 inches already today since midnight. Been outside fighting to keep storm drains clear since 3 AM so my basement doesn't flood again. Gonna call the city to see if we can get some engineers out here to redesign the water flow. This water flow should be better funnelled.

Over 91 inches of rainfall for the year...and counting...

  6. Rain was not that impressive IMBY today (1.15 inches), but I have now climbed above 83 inches for the calendar year, which is just INSANE for this location.  I continue to build on the wettest year I've ever had at this location in nine years of living here.  Almost 10 inches of rain in October too.  I think 100 inches is probably pretty unlikely, but it's definitely not out of the question and what I am currently on pace for this year.

  7. After rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Delta, I have now recorded over 79 inches of rainfall IMBY, making this the rainiest year on record for my nine years at this location.  And...there are still 2.5 months remaining in this calendar year.  Wow.

If this verifies and we can ride this pattern into mid-October, there's a good chance we could see our first flakes flying in the higher elevations in less than a month. I've seen it a few of times in my lifetime here. :D

Yeah, one of the last times it significantly snowed in October, the Blowing Rock area got around 4-6 inches on Halloween.  I think that was 5-8 years ago.  I took the kids up the mountain to go sledding.  We had a blast.  I then expected a rockin' winter, and it turned out to be very mild, unfortunately.
