  1. Hey super -- I forget the year but one time we had a quick band of snow move through at evening rush hour with temps in the teens. It had been very cold for a few days but no prior snow, so there was no chemical residue on roads. Most places got just a quarter inch, but tire action from cars flash froze it and all roads became sheets of ice. Salt trucks were helpless because roads were jammed. The area became paralyzed and people were trapped in their cars for hours -- up to 10 hours or more. My wife's mom was in her car for 7 hours for her 12 mile drive. Many people just abandoned their cars and walked off. I have 0.4 in Germantown. I just need 0.1 more to get me to a cool 20" for the winter.
  2. Light snow and 17 in Germantown; about 1/4" so far. Anyone remember 1/5/2003? That was a similar set up with a weak disturbance moving through with cold temps, and expected to drop around an inch. It just popped right over the central part of the area, and I ended up with 5 inches. One of my favorite overperformers.
  3. Light snow and 15 in Germantown, already dusting all surfaces. Radar returns are light but look focused over our area.
  4. I have GOT to experience lake effect some day. That's definitely on the bucket list.
  5. That was a real nice squall in Germantown; temp down to 22. I don't know how you'd measure this -- might be a quarter inch or so. Based on radar, I'd love to see what it was like around Mt. Airy.
  6. 2 miles NNE of Germantown, 39.208660 N, -77.251600 W November 15: 3.0 Jan 12-13: 12.5 January 17: 1.3 January 29: 2.5 January 30: 0.2 Total: 19.5
  7. I am teleworking so I'll put a full day in rather than going in 2-3 hour late. Down to 11 degrees and streets, which were not treated, are a sheet of ice. MCPS closed just as I'm typing this. Hoping for a squall later!
  8. My snow is so wet and dense that my electric snowblower quickly choked on it. Had to just use the shovel. They didn't do our streets and it's like 1-2" of slush. Going to be a sheet of ice tomorrow morning.
  9. I measured 2.5" two miles NNE of Germantown, which puts me at 19.3 for the winter. Incredible good luck considering how bad the winter has been for much of the I-95 corridor.
  10. I was on that 3:30 from Union Station -- it was PACKED eh? Beautiful here too with just about 2 inches. In December 2003 I left Union Station with just rain and had 8" on the ground in Germantown. Another great ride was the "psuhoffman storm" of 2011. Left with rain and arrived to 4" and blinding snow.
  11. Light rain in NE DC, a few blocks from Union Station. Taking the 3:30 MARC train and hope to see some snow as I head NW.
  12. PSU's snowfall posts above got me thinking to compare his averages with Boston (Logan Airport) -- their average is about 44 inches a year -- pretty close to what PSU gets. Wow what a micro climate! How about summer -- do you rarely hit 90? BTW Boston -- so far this winter they have only received 1.8 inches! That has to some kind of record? And they're not getting much tomorrow night (maybe an inch), then deep cold for a few days before the warm-up. I can't believe it's almost February and I have 16.8 to Boston's 1.8.
  13. I will take that Euro map posted above and RUN with it.
  14. They said the transition period over the last part of January would feature big temp swings and a lot of back and forth with the models, but things would be more stable once the big cold settles in at the beginning of February. I hope we get one of those long lead-time tracking events in a couple weeks.
  15. Perfect test for the Radarscope precip depiction -- the ground obs line up perfectly with the snow vs. rain. You can really see the CAD on it nicely.
  16. 2 miles NE of Germantown, 39.208660 N, -77.251600 W November 15: 3.0 Jan 12-13: 12.5 January 17: 1.3 Total: 16.8
  17. WOW you're going to Killington for the long weekend? Oh man you're in for some serious cold and snow! LOL Saturday night 10-14 inches with low of 6 degrees. I went to Killington this same weekend in 1995 and it rained and reached 50. Anyone see the Washington Post article from a couple days ago about the Polar Vortex having split into three pieces? Here is is in case anyone missed it: Polar Vortex Fractures - Washington Post
  18. Where in Maine? I've been looking at the VT forecast since I've skied there -- holy crapola! 1.3 here, bring me to 16.8 for the winter. Great winter already, even with the December miss.
  19. Oh they were bad! I saw a few cars slip, especially when starting from a stop. The unplowed neighborhood streets are easy; it was that half inch of new snow on Rt. 355 that was super slick. My 19-year-old son drives home from work at Wegmans at 6:00. Glad he took the Outback! I didn't do the proper measuring and I know was compacting earlier. I have 7" on the ground now with moderate snow, 28 degrees.
  20. Wow! What area of Germantown are you? I am next to Milestone near 355 and 27, and have closer to 6 inches. Just went around the corner to pick up a pizza and the roads are BAD again. Moderate snow and 29.
  21. Best snow rates I've seen all day - almost moderate. They never did plow our cul-de-sac so anything new will accumulate there.
  22. Congrats! That is an industrious young man there. Lot of kids these days are content to just sit around. Steady light snow 2 miles NE of Germantown, with larger flakes mixing in.
  23. Mother in northern Calvert just a few miles south of Wes reports 5.5. That area looks good for some ULL later on!
  24. Just cleared the driveway and walk with my electric snowblower. A cold smoke storm, it is not! That stuff is fairly dense. Right about 5" here 2 NE Germantown, and 29 degrees.
  25. Supernovasky: where in Germantown are you? I am 2 miles NE of Germantown, near Milestone. I have 4.8", 27 degrees with light snow.
