Big time heat focused in sne Sunday-Tuesday to close out July
powderfreak replied to weathafella's topic in New England
I think of my grandfather (rest in peace) being 85 years old and freezing cold all the time. The only time he could get warm was sitting on his porch in central NY when it was like 90/70 at SYR. He’d be legit cold at like 80F if the dew point was in the 40s/50s... just like DIT/Kev. Complaining about “cold evenings” when it’s like 70F outside, acting/dressing like it’s about to snow. -

Where did you find that graphic!? I didn't know CoCoRAHS had that ability... awesome. I looked quickly but couldn't find it. -

Ha! One shark death in a 100 years and shut the ocean down... "abundance of caution" sounds familiar. -

For sure, the beach is a whole other animal to the very controlled environment of a pool or inland water. The lack of waves and currents, that stuff is strong and requires a strong response. At a pool or lake, you're basically making sure a small child doesn't get in over their head or fall in. It's a job that goes along with washing dishes at an Italian restaurant at night during a summer of yore. -
Yeah even if it's not record lows like that, you usually expect the radiators to pop a 45-48F once in a while. And what the hell happened in 2001. That's like return of the ice age.

Our average here in the 700-800ft range at the valley bottom is 80/56 right now. It should be low 50s just as often as low 60s... we should see 40s once in a while. Like stuff where you wake up at 3am and want to close the windows and doors because it's cold inside. With an average high of 80F, we should have days where it struggles to hit 70F just as often as days that hit 90F. That's crazy to me. I can't even imagine struggling to reach 70F at the same frequency that we have touched 90F this year.

A nice cool evening... aka probably right in the "normal" zone but feels cool this summer. Into the 60s by 9pm is refreshing. -

For someone who likes to rip the band aid off a season and go immediately into the next season, I can see how April would be infuriating to you. It's not the most boring but it can sure suck. I'd go like April 21-May 21 here... early April is still legit snow chances and skiing, as the mountain snowpack is usually still near it's peak depth. -

I consider myself a strong swimmer, grew up in the water, spent my high school/college summers as a Lifeguard, and I've never been so terrified as I was in a rip current in Florida. Mostly due to my incompetence, I'm a mountain guy, not marine. The surf was pretty rough to begin with, but as soon as the water got over head height I was sucked outward like I've never felt before. Even swimming sideways, by the time I was out of it I was alarmingly far out and had some rough surf to get back in. I remember thinking, oh this is easily how people drown. You are exhausted afterwards and with high surf, even getting back in required getting slammed by a few waves that felt like being in a washing machine, upside down, spinning, etc. -

Same up here. We've had some quality damaging wind/flood events. Though 2017 was that huge region wide wind event in October or November? Last Halloween up here had that near record flooding that matched or exceeded Irene on some rivers. That one sort of surprised and over-performed. -

Yeah boring can be very nice. Need to wait for October though to really get those strong autumn FROPAs and wound up synoptic lows. October usually has some good wind and precip. -

Yeah even post FROPA here has had a max/min of 84/57 which will be about +2. It’s been impossible to get a below normal day this month. -

Been a busy decade for hot July’s. Can’t wait to do it again next July, ha. -
Congrat's man. Sounds a bit too heady for my simpleton brain, but fun accomplishment to get a book out there.

ALB recently dropped out from 60s to 53-54 for dews too. There are pockets of dew mins scattered around the Northeast. -

Look at that 48F dew at BOS... today was pretty incredible from a comfort standpoint. Woke up to dews in the low 70s but then that 20 degree dew point drop midday really changed things. It's incredible how much the dew point factors into comfort. Regardless of the temperature. -

Are they spreading it in the locker room? No way that's all happening outside It has to be locker room or just spending time together. You don't get 15 players and a few coaches on top of that to just pick it up outside the game. -

Ha, that might be better. At least he won't give up any home runs. Just walks. Half of the Marlin's team has tested positive for COVID after more positive tests today, yikes. This won't last long anyway. -

It is the best lake in Vermont, hands down. Not even close really. Such a cool spot and topography. -

Yeah I saw the Red Sox were looking for anyone who could "throw the ball forward" to pitch for them. -

Is 2018 the current July record for BDL? Edit: Just looked it up, looks like last year 2019 is the current record for "Hartford Area." Not sure if it's year's of "Yore" right now or if we should just call it "each year gets a little hotter", ha. Summer of Yore is probably a pretty cold summer. -

72/63 here... a 9F drop in 20 minutes. Finally got some rad cooling going on. -
Yeah it was 80F at MVL at 1-2am! It had dropped into the 70s at like 9pm but spiked back up ahead of the rain. Looks like MPV was 78F at 3am that night. Every station from NNY to NNH was 75+ at like 2-3am.

So our floor to ceiling windows face south and east in the living space, which is great in winter for heating but we do have to keep the blinds and everything buttoned up during the daytime in summer. We also do the lock the house up tight and dark during the daytime to keep it cool and then open it up at night... but I just remembered why this year is different, ha. Mr. Bear. With only 1200 square feet we still have three large 8-foot sliding glass doors, one in our bedroom and two in the main living area. At night, those wide open provide extremely ample cooling to the point where with all 3 doors open we can almost match the outside temperature by morning. It’s almost like sleeping in a tent but inside, ha. We can lock the screens and with no crime and a dog as an alarm, we’ve always been comfortable with them open. This year though we have a resident bear for the past 3-4 weeks now. He’s been at our screen door at least twice... once we only saw the paw prints on the porch after the dog scared it off, the second time we had Piecasso pizza on the kitchen counter and I ended up staring at him 4 feet away with only a screen separating us, he had his nose up near the screen sniffing. After a bear entered a house on River Road in Stowe to get to the kitchen, and another one walked through a screen door in Underhill at 3am to get to the kitchen... my wife will absolutely not allow the doors to be open after dark. So we need to A/C as windows aren’t doing it. The Underhill story is identical to us... couple keeps their slider doors open at night to cool off, bear came through it and the couple woke up to plates smashing in their kitchen. I keep thinking the bear might be gone but then even this morning I found a huge pile of black, berry-filled bear scat right off our back steps. So he still makes the rounds nightly looking for food. He’s an adolescent and truly isn’t aggressive (we’ve seen him several times in the daylight too), but this is his zone on the Rec Path apparently. He just doesn’t know any better.
