  1. Skating is underway on my pond with about 3" of some of the clearest ice I've seen. Hopefully we get a chance to freeze up again after the torch.
  2. I had to spend some time fixing lights this evening, after yesterday's water ingress and rapid freeze wrought havoc on shunts and leads. Thank God for the LightKeeper Pro. Have a nice Christmas in whatever way you're spending it, folks!
  3. 7.5, down from a high of 55.9. The 50-degree threshold lurks.
  4. Definitely going to have some ice issues shortly. 27 here as well, with roads still plenty wet. Hopefully nobody slides into the ditch while proclaiming flash freezes to be a fraud...
  5. Squally AF. You guys aren't gonna believe this, but the wind makes it feel a lot colder than it really is!
  6. There are definitely times when fish are just pouring over the banks, but it doesn't seem like this rose to that metaphorical and literal level. During the July '21 flood I was scooping up bluegills on the road and trying to toss them back in on the far side. Bass don't seem to have that problem as much.
  7. Sounded like a freight train in the 5 o'clock hour, although not much damage, so maybe the atypical direction just made for exaggerated audio effects. 1.69" of rain was enough for a good pond breaching.
  8. Nice day today. Feels a little springlike with the grass all bare and ducks dabbling in open sections of the pond.
  9. Some of the best jebwalks don't have any snow.
  10. From near 60 to mid-teens in six hours on Friday night.
  11. Valid, but I can't bring myself to worry about snowpack around here. It's a lost cause most of the time. (And, incidentally, I haven't surpassed my March '18 depth since then.) I like the longer and brighter days for enjoying what falls. There's something magical about hiking or snowshoeing right after a spring snowfall, when everything's caked in snow and the sun warms your face as it climbs. It's fleeting, but more intensely beautiful imo. And, crucially, a strong send-off to winter makes the coming warm season feel less daunting. Sure, the inverse could be argued - snow is better when there are more snow chances on the horizon - but if I had to choose...
  12. Hot take: I'd rather have a snowy March than a snowy December
  13. Yeah, and it's not like it was just some abstraction that we have to accept on faith. The big synoptic storms have been there. The cold air was around.
  14. If it weren't for the lofty potential, I'd have been ok with this month locally. 5.5" of snow over a few events. Nothing legendary, but far from the worst December in recent times.
  15. I won't be satisfied until we completely eliminate blue thickness lines from this domain.
  16. I don't think there's enough involvement with the PV lobe to count as a third phasing vortmax.
  17. I enjoy a good anomalous warmth event. Not my first choice, naturally, but still interesting.
  18. A sub-960mb low over the lakes would be pretty epic.
  19. It was a sneaky Currier & Ives morning with 1.0" of pasty snow glinting in the sunlight, and mist in the glens and hollows. All a distant memory now, of course. 35/35
  20. The Gulf of Alaska shortwave is quite a bit flatter too, more reminiscent of yesterday's big runs.
  21. 0.6" new snow in central Dutchess since the changeover around 5 pm.
