Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion

Retire DTX met Bill Deedlers Winter outlook for the Great Lakes https://weatherhistorian.blogspot.com/2019/11/neutral-enso-takes-back-seat-to-other.html?m=1 -
Crazy to think that our peak was just 1" under that, and the non lake belt areas of northern MI are well behind SE MI out of the gate. I It is still one month before the Winter Solstice, but still.

Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion

So true, we have already broken so many November snow records this year. Lets go for monthly record too. If no more snow falls, we have already locked in 4th snowiest November (which was locked in by November 12th). -
It's just the beginning. What was your peak snow depth so far this season?
-
The scenes here this past week were incredible for early to mid November. Grass is starting to show now, but lots of piles remain.
-
Still a Winter wonderland, what a week of scenes it has been. Seeing so many plowed snow banks this time of year is crazy. Yesterday I attempted leaf cleanup...definitely a challenge this year lol. The rooftops are still covered with snow, glittering, but the ground is slowly sucking up the snow during the daytime hours. Depth down to 3" (deeper on elevated surfaces) from a high of 9" after the storm, still no grass showing yet.

Early and late snows may often be the "stat padding" type, but this past week I would hardly consider stat padding. It was an absolute deep Winter week, with a historic November snowstorm at Detroit, and likely Windsor (if they would actually measure). -
For Detroit the 1st half or November was by far the coldest 1st half of November on record. The previous record, 1976, was 1.2゚ warmer. Also the 9.5" was the snowiest 1st half of November on record as well. Our week long Winter wonderland is also a record, and even though the ground is starting to suck up the snow, I notice that while the depth on the grass is around 3", elevated surfaces still have closer to 6".
-
The conifers are still holding onto their snow days after the storm. Definitely an unexpected landscape for days in a row the 2nd week of November
-
Records falling like dominoes at Detroit the last 3 days November 11th: Record snowfall of 8.5" ***largest calendar day snowfall on record for November*** November 11/12th: Largest November snowstorm on record, 9.2" November 12th: Record low maximum of 25F November 12th: Record low of 13F November 12th: Record snow depth of 9" November 13th: Record low of 7F ***first single digit low in November since 9F on Nov 21, 1969*** ***coldest Nov temp since 7F on Nov 24, 1950*** ***there has not been a colder Nov temp since 4F on Nov 30, 1929, or 90 years ago!*** November 13th: The 7F is the earliest to hit single digits on record (old record Nov 16, 1933) November 13th: Record snow depth of 7"
-
That is insane. I just took a walk in the deep snow with a full moon overhead and the air so crisp and cold it crunched, looked, and sounded like midwinter, not November 12th.
-
Drove through a heavy band of snow this morning. 0.2" at my house and DTW but up to an inch in a few spots.
-
More flurries here today. Trace #5 since Oct 31...lets get something measurable now!
-
Will be interesting to see if we can get any measurable snow here. We got on the board with our 1st trace Halloween evening then continued with a trace each of the 1st 3 days of November.
-
Hey now, dont sell your winter short long before it starts lol. You may see more severe winter weather than that. However that said, whats going on in the Rockies is VERY impressive. They are used to October and May snows, as well as January days of 70F, but this is something else. With all the subpar winters Denver has had lately, this might be one of the severest stretches of winter weather theyve had in some time.

Definitely looks like an early dose of Winter. But we had quite bc a few snowfalls last November before December turned very mild and then Winter roared back in January. Hopefully this Christmas season has lots of snow to go with it! -

True. I had 96.2" and Detroit 94.9" in 13-14. But it wasnt JUST the snow, it was the severity of the winter. The brutal cold, winds, and nonstop blowing snow which is why i have a hard time seeing that winter matched for overall severity. In shear terms of snowfall, especially with it seemingly increasing in the lakes, id say its definitely possible. -

Impossible lol. But i can dream. -
Most years areas they get MUCH less snow than you, and less snow than me, get snow before us out in the Plains. Obviously the northern plains get harder hit but even further south. Just how it works, and a sign that Winter is knocking on the door!
-
The northern plains are set to see a potentially historic snowstorm in a few days that is "unheard of for October" in terms of size and intensity. This is after the more isolated but very intense Montana snowstorm last week. Two unheard of snow storms before mid October!!! Perhaps it will be signs of a wild Winter this year. The northern plains and Western States usually get snow before us, but this is quite an early start!
-
Yeah last winter did not deliver any big storms here (biggest 6.1") and was below avg in snowfall despite colder than avg temps for the cold season. Despite this i had never seen a winter here with so many ice storms. Ice (outside of a few minor glazes) had been really missing in action for a while here. It was still a fairly "wintry" winter, just nothing exciting in the snow department here. Which after so many years of se mi snowmagnet, i can share some. But im certainly hoping for a snowy winter this year!

Hoping for a good Winter sub forum wide!

That's crazy. At Detroit the total since 2011-12 is a 33.0" surplus. Going back to 2007-08, the last 10 years, Detroit has a surplus of 112.4"! That's assuming this season is done which it may not be. Does anyone have the avg for Toledo? I'd like to see their stats in that time frame. I know chicago is definitely a surplus but probably not quite as high. FYI the lowest back to back winters here was 1936-37 & 1937-38 with a total of 35.5" (12.9, all time lowest, followed by 22.6).
-
Wow, I didnt realize that. Thats crazy.
-
I loved last years tundra winter of deep snow, but outside of the massive Feb 1st snowstorm there werent really any big storms. Now 2013-14 on the other hand, that winter was a haven for one snowstorm after another, We had 6 storms over 6"+ here (4 of the 6 were over 8") so its crazy if Cleveland missed all of them.
