  1. ^^In a way this was a bit stranger than 2011. That was after the atmosphere had experienced a significantly turbulent event (Irene) and wavelengths were messed with bringing a higher chance for an anomalous cold air intrusion. This was just sort of "in the course of things".
  2. It's not the cars that can't handle it it's the tires they come with and the tires that people buy to replace those with. I have a few neighbors with Subarus and assorted other AWD cars and they struggled with the conditions yesterday. They fought through it last year too and just can't seem to understand why. I get around just fine in my BRZ with rear wheel drive and ~4 1/2" of clearance and nobody can figure out how I do it. Tires people, tires. The LRR pieces of crap that come on your cars get you decent mpg's but suck when it's cold and slippery, the car companies have to spec them to bring their fleet averages up that extra 1-2mpg but you don't have to stick with them. Then you have all of these people that go with UHP's or Max Performance tires because some dude on the internet told them that's the best for the car but they never seem to think that the recommendation is coming from someone in Texas. The whole thing gets me so frustrated...grrrr.
  3. The crust on this stuff is pretty significant. I expect that with the cold temps tonight it will be pretty supportive, maybe even enough to hold my 45# dog up. That was some heavy work shoveling the driveway.
  4. Quick burst of heavy sleet followed by about 20 minutes of heavy snow with another quick burst of sleet as it wrapped up and now the sun is coming out and the wind is up. That was a fun storm to watch, glad I didn't have any reason to be out in it after the first hour or so, sounds like it was a mess out there.
  5. Haha me either, I actually haven't been outside other than stepping out the back door to stick a ruler in the snow last night since I got home around 5:30 yesterday. I'm so not looking forward to cleaning this up. It's heavy and frozen and the plow pile at the end of the driveway looks like it's totally gonna suck
  6. What a mess out there now. Freezing rain overnight and heavy sleet this morning has put a 'nice' crust on everything. I wonder when the trees will start coming down? Not looking forward to it, I have no gas for the generator
  7. A few years ago I had to go through the Bronx on a night like this and after almost 90 minutes of getting trapped behind stuck vehicles I gave up and drove up the sidewalk for 2 blocks to get past a mess, had to use the sidewalks two more times before I finally got out to the BRP. When I hit that first hill at the golf course I had to use the shoulder and grass to go around all of the cars stuck in the middle of the road. The hill on the Sprain going up to 287 was a slalom course. Subaru FTW!
  8. Usually I'm all excited to go out and shovel and be out in the storm while it's doing its thing, not so much tonight. It's just plain old ugly out there, it's windy and sleeting and just well, yuck. I must be getting old About an hour ago 3 cars came down the street within a minute of each other, it had been over an hour before that and now it's been another hour with no activity. I'm guessing the roads are a real mess. Julian be careful going through this area...
  9. Heavy wind driven sleet now. There hasn't been a car moving on my street for an hour or so, I'm wondering if all of the roads coming up the hill are blocked. Not going out to find out
  10. Wind flipped to southerly a little while ago and it's a mix of big flakes and heavy sleet now. 7" down and it's getting ugly.
  11. Looks like I'm going to finish with a bit over 7" unless there's another serious burst. Not bad for November, it started around 4pm so about 2"/hr. It was really grainy at the beginning but started sticking to the roads almost immediately and now it's going back to grainy after a few hours of nice big flakes. Wind is coming up now from the south too.
  12. Umm yeah... You're gonna be that guy that's doing 10mph and making everyone else late Just steal your wifes car. See ya FTL?
  13. Thanks guys. It definitely has the feel and look ahead of a snowstorm out there now. Boy the turn from late summer to fall to winter was too quick...
  14. I wish my property was right for solar power. The house and ground faces generally east and all of the south and west sides are lined with 60-75 foot trees on the neighbors sides so at prime time I get very little sun once the trees are leafed out. I could pull a few hours early in the day but I don't think that would be enough to justify the cost.
  15. I didn't get a chance to mow once the leaves started coming down and the grass was already a few inches at that point. I'm looking at 6" at least What are you thinking for start time? I'm going to be east of you in CT around lunchtime then have to head down to Newtown and Danbury mid afternoon.
  16. From about the Dover/Pawling line north it's more common than further south at this point in the season, along the Taconic spine that line seems to be somewhere around Rt 55. It's like the high country in that area gobbles up the last of it and it transitions to more of a coastal influence until things get truly cold and continental air overwhelms and the offshore waters cool down to the low 40's then the line moves down into north central Westchester/Fairfield counties from about Mt Kisco across to Wilton.
  17. A while back I looked at 2 local WU stations and did a quick tally and by mid September both were well over 50". It's kind of surprising that BDR and POU are both hovering near there now but I know there were lots of times where it was pouring here and they got skunked. I'll have to go back and add up the totals from 9/10 to now and see how far past 60" my area is now. I can tell you that it's so soggy in the woods it's tough to leave the more heavily traveled areas without sinking in a couple of inches.
  18. It's almost looking like some of those streamers will make it down here this afternoon.
  19. Every now and then when the timing is just right those streamers will cause a flash freeze around here but usually it's just showery and squally. So what are we thinking for Thursday/Friday? An inch of sleet topped with 2-4" snow sounds about right to me. Even if it's just a coating of sleet we are going to need something for the snow to stick to because the ground is still really warm. I'll hope for no or very little rain as we're already so soggy and that would just add more heat to the surface before the frozen precip.
  20. Oh man I'm so sorry We're all too young here to be having to go through something like that. Lean on us if you need to...
  21. I have a shovel collection, there's always one with the right blade shape to move what I need to move or break up. It keeps me young and humble too It also gives me the chance to spend more time outside in the snow when it's falling because I like to get it out of the way before there's too much at any given time. Most importantly I can shape and stack my banks to be the biggest on the block
