The lack of meaningful cold air / snowcover globally thus far, and even what's projected heading into early November, is not exactly a great signal for a sustained winter pattern any time soon. That being said, things can certainly flip on a dime, and that doesn't preclude intermittent cold shots or even snowfall opportunities. BTW, the SSWE / Polar Vortex hype every season by certain mets is becoming some real shit.

EF-2 tracking 3.5 miles. 1 man was injured trying to protect this newborn from a falling tree, but fortunately no fatalities.

Mary Sheffield (Detroit's mayor) says the NWS informed her privately it was a tornado, although their final official public report along with the rating is still pending. This is the first tornado to touch down in Detroit proper since the historic July 1997 outbreak. At the very least, I'm thinking EF-1 (possibly EF-2).

More and more evidence via X coming in that a tornado might have in fact touched down the lower east side of the city. Widespread damage.

Just cloud cover and maybe some sprinkles, but that will knock down temps briefly until the weekend. It was the 3rd top 10 hottest Summer and 4th top 20 hottest Summer though within the past 5 years...

Seems it could have been GRR and/or IWX, as they opted to go with a single watch over the whole area. The GRR portion of the watch in particular looks iffy though.

It ended up being largely a nothingburger for Michigan any way, outside a narrow corridor from the Tri-Cities to Lake St. Clair. Instability, low-level moisture and shear were sufficient, but the nebulous forcing wasn't enough to overcome the residual cap and the dry air advecting in aloft. Kind of unfortunate, because I'm sure meaningful rain would have been nice for the Detroit area after the past few days..

Pretty large enhanced risk area stretching back into NE OH tomorrow, on top of the broader slight risk area for MI / IN and the rest of OH. Seems to be some question as whether the pre-frontal trough vs. actual cold front will be the focus point though...
