  1. Not a UFO but I did get a picture of the Horsehead Nebula through my very light polluted side yard (there's a post office parking lot nearby that stays lit up all night.
  2. I see a lot of 12/5 analogs in there and a big surprise to see Boxing Day in the mix too. The 12/5/95 storm wasn't the big one that month though but the 12/5/03 event sure was.
  3. I remember this happened in Feb 2008 and we ended up getting 6-8 inches of snow. That can happen in February though, it's more difficult to do in December
  4. and Feb 1961! one of the greatest winter precip storms of all time (right behind Feb 1922 and just ahead of Jan 2016) We need to go back and retroactively start naming these so that they can be catalogued properly (especially when there is more than one of these in a month)
  5. thats awesome I wonder what the temp is at- Muttontown (coldest place in Nassau) and FOK (coldest place on Long Island) as well as MJX (pine barrens of NJ) and JFK and MVY (pine barrens of NE)
  6. I was looking for the northern lights tonight but couldn't see them but as luck would have it, I saw a bright meteor streaking below Sirius that was just about as bright as Sirius itself! Also as luck would have it, my camera was sitting on its tripod pointed right at the meteor.....but with a drained battery! =\ I think this was an early Geminid, and the shower is supposed to peak Saturday night (when it's supposed to be cloudy here) but I should have one more night to see the shower tomorrow night (and maybe Sunday night again?)...so I'm recharging the battery now. Looks like the peak of the Geminids is actually Sunday night- Monday morning, so I'll have a few more chances!
  7. edit updated map shows 3.7 at Scranton and 2.6 right near my other house, got a nice T (long duration snow flurries) here on Long Island
  8. Thanks for this Walt! The Scranton total was updated to 3.3! Where was the 4" report from? Also, looks like my other home in Albrightsville didn't get an inch?
  9. at this point, 6" of sleet would be exciting
  10. I remember back then February's averaged colder than january's and both averaged in the 20s....found an old Weather Almanac that had temps from the 1700s and 1800s!
  11. wow that entire period sucked out here, not a single double digit snowfall event between 1983 and 1993 here and no 30" snowfall seasons between 1979 and 1994 No snow days for me in that entire period on western LI
  12. the year before snowfall measurements became official it's said that NYC got 100"
  13. December 15th....it's the "BlueWave" storm. He mentioned it first so it's going to be named after him if it happens. If not....it's the "BlueWave" bust lol.
  14. But I thought the last 10 days are supposed to be warm? How much of a difference is there between our current average and the warmest year on record and what year was it?
  15. John Lennon's anniversary of his tragic death- RIP
  16. yes- or going from single digital to 50 inches in consecutive years (2001-02 and 2002-03) actually 2000-01 to 2001-02 to 2002-03 was a fair repeat of the years you quoted.
  17. averages dont mean anything when it comes to snowfall- as a matter of fact, a so-called "average" snowfall season is the least likely outcome.
  18. and there is so much variability that it doesn't even make sense to use averages.
  19. I'm telling ya it was obvious that coastal SNE wouldn't get much snow and they didn't This was an interior SNE and CNE/NNE snowstorm.
