  1. the shark was only 5 ft from the beach!
  2. NY just passed some of the stiffest drinking water regulations in the country- now applying these regulations to 1,4 Dioxine to Trace amounts (it's a cleaning chemical found in water on Long Island) using a UV cleaning system and using a carbon filtration system to remove PFOA/PFOS....... the new regs will cost $700 million but are worth it for cleaner water. Town of Hempstead is suing Dow for the chemical dump...the extra cost should be passed onto them.
  3. Thanks, how far back do the records go? Do you have anything for 1993?
  4. I dont take these things seriously 5-7 days out but for some reason the mets on WABC have been barking about an "east coast hit" since this morning.
  5. I just hope we dont go all Florida summer weather and its always humid and in the 90s and we dont ever hit 100. I liked those summers more (91,93,99, 2010, 2011), not the yucky Florida summers we now have.
  6. we need to build a wall to keep that sea breeze out ;-)
  7. the high was 95 here, two degrees below last Monday when we hit 97. I love the low humidity though.
  8. they had to change the saffir simpson scale because of similar rounding
  9. Chris, whats the record for max SST in our area? I recall seeing 85 degree SST off the Jersey Shore in July 1993, never saw anything that high again.
  10. seeing more subtropical bugs here too unfortunately. this climate kinda reminds me of Florida, especially in the summer. It doesn't hit 100 there near the coast, but they always have this stifling humidity and temps in the 80s and 90s.
  11. is this rare during a la nina? I was wondering if the impending TC strike for Hawaii was a rare event for them during a la nina too.
  12. 100 and 90 degree temps both seem to be less than what we had during the 90s, but that is to be expected, as the humidity levels rise, it's harder to reach extreme temps. But when the humidity levels rise, it also makes the min temps higher, so it's a give/take scenario.
  13. Yes that was when both LGA and JFK hit 97 while NYC only hit 93. Out of curiosity how much hotter were the the 850s last July when we hit 99 on back to back days and saw the record heat indices?
  14. hmmm I missed the one in 1983, I was out of the country for summer vacation from school. I do remember it was really hot when I got back in early September though. That reminds me of something I wanted to ask you (and Chris).....normally, when we have big el nino winters, we have a really hot summer with 100 degree temps after that.....it happened in 1983 and it also happened in 2010....... why was it that it didn't happen in 2016? 2015-16 was a good match to 1982-83 especially because of the "one big snowstorm" nature of the winter (which tends to favor coastal areas), but the summer after 2015-16 wasn't at all like the summer after 1982-83.
  15. wow that's been happening a lot this year, even when we have a strong westerly or northwesterly breeze to start the day. Sometimes we hit 100 before the shift happens..... if the shift occurs after 1 PM......do you think it could be delayed until after that? I dont think JFK has hit 100 in August in my lifetime, it's usually July or not that summer.
  16. why are we still allowing for development along the shore? I know that Miami, New Orleans, Charleston, and NYC all have plans to replenish the sand and even build sea walls to keep the ocean at bay, but at some point it wont be enough. NYC has a trillion dollar plan to extend the coast outwards.
  17. I hope today didnt ruin the chances for an 80 avg.....the forecast for today was really blown by the local mets, no one expected a washout
  18. and no sea breeze on Monday, so maybe JFK can hit 100? I've heard it's going to cool down after the middle of next week, so if it's going to happen at all this summer it'll have to be next week.
  19. I'm hearing that this is going to be the end of the big heat for awhile, so if we're going to hit 100 this summer it'll probably be on Monday. After the middle of next week, looks like we're going to go back down to normal temps for awhile.
  20. Yes, that will make Saturn a nice target for my camera. Even without a telescope it can be done with a nice long lens (around 600mm EFL.)
  21. This has an amazing map showing where Neowise is: https://theskylive.com/planetarium?obj=c2020f3&date=2020-07-20&h=00&m=00#ra|11.840402637121267|dec|45.5351978494491|fov|80
  22. it's being reported near Babylon (south of Montauk Hwy) too!
  23. Looks like that predicted methane release from Siberia may be right around the corner....
  24. Yesterday was the way heat is supposed to be! lol NYC was 4 degrees cooler than JFK
