Or stay on the outer edges.
-
The best way to chase it is to stay out of the heaviest bands.
-
Depends on what you mean for the start of winter. For me winter starts on December 21st. We could easily get an end of November snowstorm and then it thaws for a couple of weeks in December and then we get cold again in the latter part of December.
-
It can snow in both November and April-- we've seen 6"+ snowstorms in both months.
-
We've had quite a few La Ninas with average to above average snowfall totals.
-
They did say there were nonviolent ways of handling the problem. I think they could be tranquilized and relocated or tranquilized, sterilized and then relocated. There's a variety of methods to control populations. I like the idea of sterilization and relocation myself. I don't like the idea of humans deep in the wilderness because as human populations increase, there is less and less land left for nature. Now, if human populations stabilize that's a different story.

Sounds like Syracuse is a lot better than Watertown (although close to the edge of totality so 1.5 min of totality vs 3.75 min; maybe somewhere in between is even better.)
-
How's the weather up there in the first couple of weeks of April? Wondering where the best place would be to set up for the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse. Thinking somewhere between Syracuse and Watertown as if now.
-
That being said, the good part is that it's predictable where the best bands will set up so if you really want to be in them, you know exactly what counties to live in.
-
Regardless those were both very snowy winters weren't they? 14-15 and 17-18 were both extremely backloaded winters too
-
Thanks Walt. I saw a report of about 0.1" icing from Sussex NJ and there was a report of 5.6" of snow from some town in the Southern Poconos and also near Altoona.
-
That sounds like we might be headed to a semi permanent la nina state (at least until average temperatures get re-calibrated.) However the enso response may be unconventional in terms of sensible weather because we are seeing major alterations in sea currents and SST in other parts of the world too (including the western Atlantic and the Gulf Stream.)
-
That was also a third year la nina
-
Was JFK's latest in 2001 Chris?
-
Thanks Walt, looks like the predictions were right, 3.5" around my part of the Poconos! Why did that area get more than areas to the north of there, Walt?
-
Hope it doesn't happen like the notorious heavy wet snow in October a few years back.
-
That brings in warmer air off the ocean, right, Don?
-
Wow first freeze wasn't until December in 2010? When was the latest-- 2001? Toronto's latest was 2004? That was a very cold and snowy winter.

Those creatures are super smart! I saw a video of one letting her kids play on a swing set in someone's back yard while she stood guard. After a few minutes she guided them out of the area. Another one showed how bears can open car doors to get at food. As long as the door is unlocked the bear can open it! Another one showed a bear carrying a bag of groceries in her mouth (lol-- likely trash) to feed her kids with. And now for the not so smart human creatures. In LA a guy was so busy on his cell phone that he literally bumped into a bear without knowing it and the bear looked at him quizically like-- DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! When he saw the bear finally, after getting his nose out of his phone, he let out a loud scream and ran the opposite way lol.
-
Yep, I agree with this. The trash thing is likely what's causing them to come there, there should be a better way to dispose of trash. Where I live we have containers in the ground with a hatch that opens it (which is what the sanitation department uses). It's wildlife proof from what I can tell. I've had one encounter with a bear. It was last fall- I was raking leaves and saw one pass by me about 20 feet in front of me. I just stood there and let the bear go without making a sound. It didn't care about me at all, nose to the ground, busy in its own little world. I wasn't scared....I'm more scared of mice, spiders and centipedes and water bugs in my house lol.

Occasional Thoughts on Climate Change
LibertyBell replied to donsutherland1's topic in Climate Change
This is poetic justice....finally these chemicals (including fossil fuels) are doing something good. and lol at these people always being worried about not having enough younger people to sustain the olds. Nature always finds a way to protect itself. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/10/cocktail-of-chemical-pollutants-linked-to-falling-sperm-quality-in-research A cocktail of chemical pollutants measured in people’s bodies has been linked to falling semen quality by new research. Chemicals such as bisphenols and dioxins are thought to interfere with hormones and damage sperm quality, and the study found combinations of these compounds are present at “astonishing” levels, up to 100 times those considered safe. Bisphenol A (BPA) was responsible for the highest risks, the scientists said. The chemical is found in milk and tinned food as it leaches from the linings of the packaging. The key steps for healthy male sexual development occur during pregnancy, making the study results particularly relevant for expectant mothers, the researchers said. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/dec/15/fall-fertility-rates-may-be-linked-fossil-fuel-pollution-finds-study Decreasing fertility rates may be linked to pollution caused by fossil fuel burning, a review of scientific studies has found. Over the past 50 years childbirth has steadily decreased. The study focused on Denmark, but the trend is also seen in other industrialised nations. One in 10 Danish children are born with assisted reproduction and more than 20% of men never have children, according to the researchers. This decrease seems to have started at the beginning of industrialisation. Experts have warnedthe trend could lead to an unbalanced demographic with too few younger people to support the older generations. -
TWC predicted 3-5 inches for me down by Albrightsville (also around 2000 ft asl), I wonder if that's going to pan out.

The governor of NJ is getting a lot of anger for re-instating the bear hunt. And he deserves the criticism, especially after he promised to ban it as a campaign pledge. He's using flawed data to say that bear populations have gone up a lot, as the Sierra Club pointed out, the higher reports of bears were because people were home because of the pandemic and as soon as they started going back to work the reports went back down again. He even said that if there aren't enough bear kills (read there aren't enough bears to kill) he's going to do another bear hunt in December! This is awful. People told him that if he really thinks there are too many bears there are other ways of dealing with them other than violence. To be honest there are WAY too many people and they live in wilderness areas where they don't belong and they're dirty and careless with their trash-- those are the real problems. Not the bears! But bears don't vote so they are the ones who have to suffer.

This isn't your first freeze is it? Still waiting for that here, mid 30s, will likely get a hard freeze this weekend when the highs are in the upper 30s and lows are in the mid 20s-- January weather lol.
-
I wouldn't say this isn't a chilly weather time of year. Historically speaking and in my experience our first bout with cold weather (below freezing temperatures) usually comes in the middle of November.
