  1. Is there a purpose to making up the days though? If the kids pass their tests and do their work, why should it matter if they go to school for 180 days or less?
  2. March 1888 may have been one of these absurd monster events....from what I read about 1888 there were monster storms that entire season in different parts of the country.
  3. I hate damp weather too, which is why I hope the pattern of dry springs keeps going
  4. I wonder why we don't have multi year el ninos, at least triple year el ninos are unheardof in the modern record
  5. Looks like la nina is the normal base state of the Pacific Ocean
  6. I think that one hit here...we were under a Blizzard warning for that in late January last season (Nassau and Suffolk).
  7. That didn't just hit them that hit New York City and points east too. A foot of snow from Brooklyn on east. That was our one snowstorm last season.
  8. there is no such thing as "future" radar, it's just another highly imperfect computer simulation.
  9. I dont even remember that storm, wasn't that the same one that dropped a foot of snow here?
  10. 1933 was part of that 11 year bake off summer list we all know and love and had a hyperactive tropical season followed by a record winter for cold and snow. Reminds me of 1995-96 and 2010-11. 1944 was the peak of the 11 year bake off summers from the pre 1950 era though lol
  11. That was a semi permanent la nina, the entire 30s outside of a couple of years was like that, it exacerbated the dust bowl (along with horrible farming practices.) Also a semi permanent la nina has been linked to the end of the Mayans. It causes droughts that can extinguish entire civilizations. This makes a strong argument for climate engineering. In science we change things for the better and weather and climate should be no exception.
  12. and that was only cold compared to the most recent 30 year average, it was still mild compared to the overall December climo history.
  13. the sun is trying to come out here on western long island too
  14. That reminds me of Feb 1983, the storm began around noon on a Friday and the snow quickly became heavy, we were let out of school an hour early, that's it. Walked home from school with my dad in the snow when I was 9 years old.
  15. People are way too glued to the models, anyone who actually watches the weather and the trends this season could tell you no way no how this was going to accumulate in the city
  16. and just imagine the meltdowns when the Red Sox underperform again, or maybe they've already come to expect it!
  17. Makes you wonder what March 1888 actually was...by reading the reports that storm alone was probably 40 inches. It shut down the city like nothing has before or since.
  18. I've acquired other hobbies like setting up bird feeders of various types and started planting bulbs in pots. The variety of wildlife even here is fascinating, I have parrots, woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays (including some giant ones), and all sorts of song birds visiting all the time.
  19. beer is actually healthier than cola is but that's a whole different convo lol
  20. It's why no snow days back then plus most of the events were timed to weekends or mid winter recess. We had a couple of 6-8 inchers but school didn't shut down for those either.
  21. I guess you could say this is more like the late 90s than the late 80s, however the level of warmth now is even greater than it was then, especially in the winter. Note-- we also had a three year la nina then but 00-01 was significantly better than this season even with the March 2001 bust included.
  22. yeah for snow futility this reminds me of the 80s, but the temps are definitely MUCH warmer....the 80s reached snow futility in a completely different way than what we have going on now.
  23. I'd like to see sun if it doesn't snow-- rain is completely useless right now.
  24. why is remote learning so bad? I found in class learning completely useless....I did all my learning reading books in the library and staying ahead of the class and acing my tests without ever really listening to anything my teachers said.
