    I have read the winter up in Montpelier, VT this year has been what the normal winter in Philadelphia would be? My argument about caring about temperatures is this-- I remember you posted numbers on this last year or the year prior-- we have been setting new records for temperatures in the 60s followed by significant snowfall... I think the record is 2 days (2 days after temperatures in the 60s we had a 6"+ snowstorm?) This year the extreme warmth has been in the middle of the nation, I heard that central Canada has been in the 70s? Broke their previous record by 4 degrees! I hope this doesn't mean wildfires later in the spring and summer!

    Yesterday wasn't half bad though, we had sun for about 2 hours. People really are thirsting for sunshine aren't they lol It's not my fault that the planet is 70% water 30% land, if I could geoengineer it, it would be about 40% water and 60% land. We don't need that much water (and it would fix the sea level rise problem too.)

    Looks like the PDO overrides both the el nino and whatever -nao there is, doesn't it? This is very similar to the late 80s early 90s pattern.

    I dont understand why people care whether it's in the 40s and sunny or in the 60s and sunny, it's not going to snow either way so it might as well be warm right now. If and when we get snow later in the month it won't matter what the temperatures are here right now.

    Indeed, I've been talking about the Fermi Paradox for years in these terms. Highly technological civilizations are fragile in the sense that what brought them great success is the same thing as what can be their great downfall.

    Yes and none of this should be necessary, because we knew this was happening even back in the 80s (and some probably knew of this even before then), action should have been taken to curb emissions much sooner.

    I love pianos but never owned a grand piano, it sounds like a lot to maintain lol. I love their sound though. I have an electronic piano and I download different kinds of piano sampling sounds onto it and I always pick a sampling of grand pianos because their sounds have the deepest most genuine timbre.

    SO2 balloons have already been launched, still in the testing phase, but expect this to be deployed every year starting around 2024. It's not a good thing but it is what it is. Sucks for us stargazers too, because it will make the skies more hazy and add to the light pollution issues (which also impact health and the environment) which we already have.

    Same thing in the summer, Ray. A lot of it has to do with more moisture in the air and more rainfall, which keeps overnight lows higher. The worst possible combo for me, in the summer I want dry and hot during the day and lower temps at night.

    all of this can be neutralized by computer controlled turbines that use motion detection to stop a specific fan from turning when a bird or bat approaches.

    The real issue with lithium batteries is them being highly flammable and what happens in flooding (but you shouldn't be driving in these conditions anyway.) That's why solid state batteries are much better as well as green hydrogen when it becomes available. Skyscrapers and planes are much worse for birds and we can also help them by reducing the godawful light pollution (which is a health issue for us too.)

    Thanks, when December produces no measurable snowfall, it's a strong indicator of a really low snowfall winter.

    But these wind farms are now computerized and they will shut down when a bird approaches. The planes that hit birds are far worse as are the light pollution of buildings that kill birds, you'll see thousands of dead birds at the bottom of these buildings, not to mention how bad light pollution is for our health.

    What determines where the cold air goes, Ray? And do we have any predictive power in that department?

    The latest single degree low I can remember happened on 2/28/15, we missed a single digit low in March by only one day. Is this the latest single degree low we've had in at least 30 years, Don? When was the last time we had a single degree low in March? That was such an unusually cold back half of winter too. I bet 1966-67 holds the record for our latest single degree low (and latest 0 temp for Long Island, which happened in March.)

    it's an interesting that even just 0.8" of snow can help drop temps Larry I think number 4 should be 3.2"?

    Hell, a single digit low at that time would be less shocking than the -1 we had on Valentine's morning in 2016, especially after how warm the previous December was. But were those single digit lows you mentioned above-- specifically in 1958-- after snowstorms? 1957-58 is an analog for this winter, but so is 1972-73.....
