  1. I am hoping we have some clear skies early tonight to see more of them. When I woke up at 3 am there were still clouds to the north and northwest, but it was clear to the northeast and in other directions, I waited an hour and the whole sky cleared up nicely Where's a good cold front when you need one lol? It was absolutely frigid this morning though, deep blue skies and very low humidity!
  2. wow absolutely amazing, and you're in Allentown right? Or nearby? Did you see them as clearly as the pictures you got?
  3. blue and purple are the rarest colors to see in Northern Lights, they are from ionized nitrogen!
  4. That's absolutely amazing-- they were people saying they looked better in NJ than they ever looked from Iceland lol
  5. the sky finally cleared out here a bit after 4 am and in the camera LCD they were easier to see, with my eyes it just looked like the sky was slightly brighter than normal
  6. Sue them or call the police, light pollution is a health hazard. I have filters that block light pollution. I actually have an idea, set up reflective mirrors or other reflective material and reflect their light pollution right back into their windows. People like that piss me off so bad I would be tossing bricks at their lights.
  7. I woke up at 3 AM, there was a bank of clouds to the north and northwest. I waited for awhile. Around 4:30 AM it cleared out so I took pictures from 4:30 AM to 5 AM. It would have been better had this happened in the winter when our nights are longer, but it was still sufficiently dark at that time to take images.
  8. wow what time and what direction did you look-- North? and how bright were they with your eyes?
  9. Capturing it on your camera counts as seeing it, was this over Long Island?
  10. we don't really get severe weather down here at the coast (which I'm perfectly fine with), our severe weather even when we're under a warning consists of some downpours and gusty winds for like 10 minutes.
  11. Don is tonight supposed to be just as good as last night was? Just look earlier because clouds will come in later? I plan to look around 10 PM tonight.
  12. wow Don how visible are they with your eyes and what direction did you look in?
  13. which part of PA? how visible is it with your eyes and what direction did you look in? we have clouds here to the north and west and it's clear to the south and east lol. I guess the northeast looks pretty clear too. But north and northwest are cloudy.
  14. Astronomy is way more interesting-- bring on northern lights and more eclipses!
  15. Oh you're up late looking too? I got some advice, even if you can't see them take pictures of the night sky with your camera (long exposure 4 sec to 10 sec) and they might show up in the images.
  16. we were in the low 50s Now I'm looking for Northern Lights!
  17. and hopefully the clouds break in time for a historic Northern Lights display tonight!
  18. ugh yeah I just wish we could at least have normal temps and sunshine though lol
  19. I thought that + part of the cycle was supposed to be ending soon? Hmmm lol When did the PDO switch to negative though, was that around 2017?
  20. why is it so cold up here? you'd think with heat that strong it would push its way up here?
  21. And did the recent -PDO start somewhere around 2017 (right after the super el nino)? And as for the AMO did that switch to negative a few years ago too? Thanks, it's good to know where we stand. After seeing that giant sunspot on the last day we had sunshine here (Wednesday) I know we're in for a HUGE solar storm this weekend (and maybe Northern Lights even down here). But it's not looking good for next winter at all.
  22. Is there any fixed or approximate length to these cycles that we could calculate how long they last? Looks like the AMO cycle is also important for our winters.
  23. Saturday will be absolutely amazing with clear skies, I hope we get to see the northern lights!
