  1. I'm not advocating that we do differently...just pointing out the exception that's all
  2. I'd say the one area of college that would feel the most impact of virtual vs in-person is the performing arts--i.e. music and theater majors. I majored in music--and I can imagine not being able to have private lessons, ensembles, and performances (particularly the degree recitals required) must be a pain. Zoom can only get ya so far in that! Lol
  3. Just out of curiosity...what would be that threshold?
  4. Man I didn't even know that could happen there, lol (of course I'm just an amateur hobbyist when it comes to this stuff!)
  5. Besides...we don't have to look too far back to see that: just look how 2017 turned on a dime! Here we are looking up at the eclipse...and the next thing you know (like literally starting the next week)...Harvey, Irma.....eventually Maria, and others! I don't even know much about how stuff happens in the tropics...but that year was enough to convince me about how quickly things can change!
  6. Since apparently it's mandatory to always factor in the fact that it's 2020...bet on this happening at least once between now and late August, lol
  7. Yeah I didn't quite understand that...suspended for voicing a legit concern?
  8. We call ourselves people here But seriously sir, getting a thrill out of extreme weather is probably much more common here than elsewhere, I'll bet!
  9. But even so...if it turns out that children can spread it...even if it harms them less, are we okay with them contributing to increased transmission of the virus? And in particular...the teachers being susceptible to it? To me that's the bigger problem...but the frustrating part is the evidence is not clear as of yet. Prior to last month, it wasn't looking like they thought kids spread it. But now, over the last few weeks, you have two rather discouraging studies come out from S. Korea (saying that kids 10+ can spread it just like adults), and another talking about kids 5 and under having a higher viral load. And then you have the two summer camp incidents. Now you mentioned suspicion about the reason for the pediatrician walk-back...I'm wondering if it's because of the research and incidents that I just mentioned!
  10. I do hope people behave in here...because this is the last surviving thread on the entire site!
  11. Knowing this year it'll probably just blow the germs virus around more! But seriously...this hurricane season combined with corona...I'm just thinking of people being in shelters and such. Yikes
  12. Wow that is truly astounding...(but sadly not surprising).
  13. Now is that an actual tweet? (I know people fake those sometimes). If it is...thats even more sad.
  14. Add that to that video taken down the other day...It just makes me sad. It's like...this is a time we need consistent information, not "my science versus theirs" The mass of confusion created is maddening and has been toxic to our response. You've got a point...so we'd probably still have some of the conspiracy stuff anyway, lol We are who we are, unfortunately... pandemic + deeply polarized country=this mess!
  15. So the theory is that the water not being as warm would mean the the hurricanes that came later in the "chain" wouldn't be as strong?
  16. Just the fact that it's still late July and we're already looking at the letter "I"...mercy. At this rate we might burn through half the alphabet before mid August, lol
  17. And I hope it does end fast (or better yet not happen at all! ) Sorry, MA bias...lol
  18. If we are now at the point where neutral ensos are no longer 50/50 and more likely to be bad than good, and we can only score in ninos...that's a sad reality. Seeing as we may only get like what...1-2 ninos per decade? That would mean we'd only hit above average 2 out of 10 years. Man I hope that's not the reality we're looking at...(and why does it seem like ninas happen more times in a decade than ninos?)
  19. Thank you for making this, PSU. Ya know, maybe this is just my brain, but...sometimes when looking at these maps that show the -AO and all of those things...I have trouble visualizing the storm tracks while looking at them. Are there any vids that can show something like, say, an animation that illustrates a storm moving through/between these various atmospheric pieces?
  20. This statement has more truth than you realize...lol
  21. So we're essentially facing the same setup as last year? (correct me if I'm oversimplifying). If so...wouldn't that make the winter forecast easier, since you could just go by last year, and go from there? Both weak ninos...the Hadley cell thing you mentioned: would it stand to reason the process will pretty much go the same way? (of course I'd like better than last year, but...if we're dealing with this "not coupling to the atmosphere" again...I won't put my expectations past last year)
  22. But wait...then how do we know what kind of ENSO we're in? (And are we reaching a point where we can't rely on history/analogs as much? And if we can't...how do ya make predictions? I'm particularly thinking about last year and how a lot of people got it wrong...partly because a weak El Niño was showing yet didn't behave like one. Are we entering uncharted weather territory overall due to the changing climate? If so...woe to the folks trying to make accurate predictions, lol
  23. Can anybody point to a reliable source for ENSO history? (I'm looking to compare snowfall during neutral winters for my region, lol)
