I was just think of Dec 11-12, 1992...the one @CoastalWx likes to forget b/c he got royally screwed in Brockton when so many others basked in white glory, getting their biggest snowfall in nearly 10 years! That even started w/ sig wind well before the pcpn started (reminded me of he Bliz of 78). You know you are in for it when that happens! Then a full day of R+ in ern MA, that turned to S+ predawn the next day and I got 18" in Woburn. To get that much rain first and that much snow in a single event is practically unheard of. Woonsocket RI had 7" total pcpn (20" of that snow). That is huge amount of pcpn in the NEUS for a nor'easter in a winter month. And it was not that extreme as far as low/high combo. 985 low stalled E of the Delmarva and a 1035 high in Quebec. Yet coastal flooding was epic.

the one thing that seperates those two composites is weather or not a +iod forced upper divergence patterrn occurs into midwinter the sst signal pretty much always goes away but if the event was strong enough the upper divergent signal over the western io can stay and all years with no snow had it and all years with lots snow did not My grand theroy is that when its just the nino like pacfic forcing the n america wavetrain the cooler anamolies are centered over the se conus and a -nao tends to appear ( or more negative compared to the other compostie) and mid atl can get a good snow or two while when the western io is also forcing the wavetrain it interfers with the el nino centering the cold over the sw conus which torches the east and leaves it without snow i should note cs3 has the divergent signal emerging in nov but collapses it by jan

I dont wanna sound to weenie but i dont think people realize how good of a look the nmme is for mid atlantic snowfall its jan feb maps look like carbon copys of the avg of the 5 strong/super nino events that produced good snow here you have the same key 3 features 1 big goa/pac low 2 hudson bay ridge 3 trough centered over the gulf coast of course details are not exactly the same but big pic it basiaclly is and its certiannly not the same as the one with no big snows in dc

Huh? They 100% have been behind this entire storm.... they weren't so bad with the coastal flooding but we're slow at first, the winds well... yeah they were very behind. High winds have verified, coastal flooding has verified, jersey shore has no sand left long island beaches have no sand left. A storm this jazzed up, this early in season with so many leaves on trees is like a tree massacre.... and such a long duration is unusual.

thats not true this enso state is not "histroically unfavroable" we only have two events like it one torched and had no snow the other had a torch dec then near normal jan feb that had a blizzard in there There are defenitly more unfavorable enso states for mid atl snow

I keep seeing people talk about the 2015 - 2016 record El Nino and how the winter of 2015 - 2016 was so horrible. I sure as heck don't remember anyone complaining about the 27.5 inches of snow Central Park got in one storm.

100% dead-on. ...I just hit on all of that in he piece I just published...competing convective forcing nodes....one in the central Pacific in association with the western warm pool that was dislodged eastward, and one with the El Niño....we are now rooting for the same warm pool that we have spent the better part of a decade cursing out.
