LibertyBell
1 minute ago, psv88 said: No. It just depends on the wind direction. Today the wind has a northerly component so the south shore will heat up faster. But by mid afternoon that will change. Yes, it has to hit 100 by 2 pm.... thats why the rapid temperature rise in the morning is necessary to get to 100 before the sea breeze hits here. It's like following a rain/mix/snow line lol

It makes a run on 103° later. That would tie the all-time June record set back in 2021. The forecast for tomorrow is a few degrees warmer at 105°. Was it right about JFK hitting 90 before 9 am? It would be the first such occurrence in June. The list is below: The highest temperature two days after 1" or more rain was 99°; the highest temperature one day after 1" or more rain was 97°. The NAM doesn't even have Islip hitting 90 today, that will horribly bust lol Let's see what time the sea breeze comes in, I'm hoping for after 2 pm back here in the western part of the island. We hit 90 before 9 am here lol.

LibertyBell
11 hours ago, donsutherland1 said: I don't believe today's light rainfall (0.10" at NYC, 0.08" at LGA and JFK, and 0.06" at Newark) will have much impact on Tuesday's high temperatures. Looking back at Central Park's long record, there were 6 100° days two days after measurable precipitation. In fact, on July 20, 1977, 0.06" rain fell. July 21, 1977 saw the mercury hit 104°. The most precipitation that fell two days before a 100° high was 0.36"; the most precipitation that fell one day before a 100° high was 0.16". The highest temperature two days after 1" or more rain was 99°; the highest temperature one day after 1" or more rain was 97°. The highest temperature two days after 2" or more rain was 95°; the highest temperature one day after 2" or more rain was 93°. Both those cases followed 3" or above rainfall. The highest temperature two days after 4" or more rain was 89°; the highest temperature one day after 4" or more rain was 87°. In short, heavier rainfall would have an impact. The light rainfall that occurred today shouldn't have much impact. The development of a sea breeze, cloud cover, and/or humidity will have a larger impact. In fact, on July 20, 1977, 0.06" rain fell. July 21, 1977 saw the mercury hit 104°. I always wondered how NYC hit 104 that day, because the park had actually cooled down after a 2 day streak of 100+ and then got even hotter the day after it rained! If that rain hadn't occurred, the park would have had 4 straight days of 100+!!!! That day it didn't hit 100 and it rained, was that the day of the big blackout Don or did that happen before? SACRUS
Again the issue more with central park is its used for the center / mecca of NYC weather when reporting. So for example today's the first 90 degree day in NYC when in fact there have been between 2 - 4 already. First 100 degree day in 13 years when there have been more recently in NYC/NJ metro proper. donsutherland1
Today is the first June day on record where both Newark and New York City (Central Park) had low temperatures of 80° or above. The last such occurrence was July 28, 2020. Overall, it is the 32nd such case during the common period for their records. Below is a chart showing the mean high temperature, highest maximum temperature, and lowest maximum temperature for such cases.

That was the second time this month that happened. The last month with two such days was August 2021. The record is 4 such days in June 2010. Even more impressive, Bridgeport, JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Islip, and Newark all reached 90° or higher, while Central Park did not for the first time since June 17, 2022 and only the 12th time during the period of common recordkeeping. The 5° difference between Brigeport (93°) and Central Park (88°) was just 1° short of the record for all days where Bridgeport reached 90° or above and Central Park did not. That record was set on June 24, 2017: Bridgeport: 90°; Central Park: 84°. During the period of common recordkeeping, there have been 149 days when JFK reached 90° or higher and Central Park did not. In contrast, there have been 722 days when Central Park reached 90°F or higher and JFK did not. There have been 46 days when Bridgeport reached 90° or higher and Central Park did not. In contrast, there have been 663 days when Central Park reached 90°F or higher and Bridgeport did not. There have been 38 days when Islip reached 90° or higher and Central Park did not. In contrast, there have been 702 days when Central Park reached 90°F or higher and Islip did not. Intriguing stats Don! How many days have there been when JFK reached 100 and NYC did not? One I remember right away is July 4, 2010.
