The 4 Seasons
Today (and tomorrow) is the 23rd anniversary of PDII. For that i have refreshed the maps for the event and created a new L Northeast map as well. It is Bostons #1 all time storm and BDRs #2 all time and only the 2nd time ever they reached 20" or more. 15-28" at every single climate site in OKX and BOX is impressive. Full radar/sfc loops up here: https://www.jdjweatherconsulting.com/feb-16-17-2003 A similar type storm we had on Jan 25-26th was almost on the level for SNE but id say about a couple/few inches lower on average. 2

I'm putting them at 22.1 since they reported 0.1 on the 7th. You can see it on the radar that they had some light snow pull through just after midnight. I'm going to be aggressive with the 20" line since a lot of these reports end Tue evening/night and trying to toss anything from Tue morning. If i only included the ones that are "final" on the PNS there would hardly be anything. And OKX doesnt even list the times so that makes it even worse. My guess is the airport prob had 24-25” but we can’t change it. We were on ne.weather back then and there was a dearth of Worcester county reports (esp northern half). We had a guy measure in Paxton (28”) and Rutland (27”) so we felt good about a general 24-28” in the towns immediately north west of ORH. There were 30 burgers up near NH border like Winchendon I think reported 30. Can’t remember what Ashburnham coop had but I remember we all thought it was super low (prob because they just stuck a yard stick in the ground at the end). Southern half of county was more like 16-20”….a lot of storms played out like that during 2000-01. Northern half of the county got destroyed. Standard airport SAs did not do this. I have printouts from the 80s and 90s of many SA ob string from various U.S. sites when big wx was occurring. I'll take a look sometime and take pix of them. Even after the METAR format was adopted in 1996, WSI took the raw METARs and converted them back to SA format for our clients/customers, so I have digital file of obs strings of selected cool wx events. It drops off to the west near barre once you are on the west side of the slopes. Lot of easterly flow in that storm so the spine and eastern slopes did well.

It still amazes me it was in the 80s for high several days before. Just is the ultimate "freak out" for ppl! Even more amazing IMHO is that inland sections of SNE already had an official heatwave late April in 2002, and then accumulating snow a month later, during the DAY no less. And the intensity was nothing like May 9-10, 1977, nor was the pattern. If you look at the 500 for 5/18/02, you will go "that produced low-elevation accumulation snow in SNE???!!!" May 1977 you can track the 500 trough from nrn Hudson's Bay days before. It drops almost due S and evolved into a massive 5 contour cut-off low just S of New England. Take a look 12z 5/10/77. Last closed contour goes from Newfoundland to RDU! Omega block. Of note, the block moved E enough for the wrn trough to move E and resulted on the "7 Fabled Days in the Plains" for large, highly visible tornadoes, esp. in the TX/OK Panhandles. It does not look impressive on SVRPLOT, but that was long before storm chasing became popular and detailed account of svr wx were limited if populated areas were not hit. But from a storm chasing POV, it was unreal. Similar to the first week of June 1995 for the same area. Lots of footage of that as Project VORTEX was on it!
