The superstorm that brought blizzard conditions to part of Cape Cod, Nantucket, and into Atlantic Canada remains, by far, the dominant global feature in terms of its expansive windfield. After having dumped 1.7" at Washington, DC, 9.5" at Nantucket, and 20.3" at Charlottetown, the storm is currently centered on the west coast of Newfoundland. At St. Anthony, NWF, heavy snow transitioned to light freezing rain, and light rain. There was a brief period where the light rain returned to light snow despite east-southeast winds suggesting that some colder air moved in aloft  in backdoor style around the storm's intense circulation. Currently, St. Anthony is reporting light rain.

At 11:30 am EDT, the storm responsible for producing blizzard conditions across a swath of eastern New England and Atlantic Canada was passing between Deer Lake, NWF and Badger NWF. Its snow had ended at Gaspé. So far, Environment Canada has reported that the highest wind gust was 201 kph (125 mph) at Norris Point, NWF.

At 2:30 pm EDT, the storm was situated between Deer Lake, NWF and Rocky Harbour, NWF. It appeared to have wobbled to the west as it continued to track northward over the past few hours. At Deer Lake, the winds reflected the westward wobble. At that location, light rain changed back to light snow as the wind shifted from north to north-northwest to southwest to west-southwest and then south-southwest. The temperature also fell from 41° to 32° in the past hour as the wind turned south-southwest.

At 4:00 pm, the storm that had impacted eastern New England yesterday was centered near the vicinity of the Strait of Belle Isle. The storm had resumed a north-northeastward track and had begun to accelerate. In addition, its center was becoming elongated. Nevertheless it remained quite intense as both Mary's Harbour, Labrador and St. Anthony, Newfoundland reported baraometric readings of 975 mb. As the storm continued to progress, blizzard conditions were expected in parts of Labrador including Cartwright and Rigolet.

The satellite presentation was no longer as impressive as it was yesterday. The eye-like feature that was present yesterday had disappeared.

Over the next 24-36 hours, the guidance indicated that the storm could turn more to the east as it continues to weaken.

At 9 pm, the formidable storm that had produced a memorable late-season blizzard had moved offshore from Labrador. It was centered near 55.0N 55.6W and continuing to push farther offshore. In its wake, snow was beginning to wind down in eastern sections of Labrador. At the same time, some of the winds around its huge circulation were beginning to sweep across the southern tip of Greenland.

Overnight, the storm curved more to the east as it tracked farther away from Canada over the Labrador Sea while weakening. At 6 am, it was located near 56.2N 53.3W. Some highlights from its North American impact:

Canada:

Biggest snowfall: 22.8" (58 cm), Rawdon Gold Mines, Nova Scotia

Highest wind gust: 128 mph (206 kph), Norris Point,NL

United States:

Biggest snowfall: 9.5", Nantucket

Highest wind gust: 83 mph, Nantucket

At 3 pm, the storm responsible for the 3/25-27 blizzard was centered near 57.9N 52.3W. It was tracking northward at about 13 mph. However, its center had become elongated and its wind field was pinched between the North American and Greenland land masses. The storm was showing early symptoms that a dissipation process could commence.

At 7 pm, the system responsible for the 3/25-27 blizzard was located near 57.8N 50.9W with a highly elongated, severely negatively-tilted center. It was showing additional signs of dissipation with its energy beginning to transfer to another system centered in the vicinity of 51.9N 33.7W. In response, the gusty winds at Cartwright, NL have diminished to just 5 mph.

That energy-transfer process is forecast to continue over the next 6-12 hours by the GFS with the system being fully absorbed afterward. In response to the developments that will be occurring south of Greenland, weak ridging over Greenland could be enhanced, helping increase the prospects for a period during which the NAO goes neutral or negative in coming days, especially as the AO will also likely be going neutral or negative.

... Record low temperature set for April 16 at NWS Marquette mi...

For the second day in a row... a low temperature record was set at
the National Weather Service Marquette station. The low temperature
this morning... April 16... at the Marquette National Weather Service
office located in Negaunee township was 5 degrees below zero... which
shatters the previous record low of 7 set in 1980. This is also the
lowest temperature recorded so late in the season... and the latest a
subzero temperature has been recorded.
