Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, January 28, 2013

Monday was cloudy and gradually milder as the day progressed. Light rain froze a bit at first, but by mid-morning temps were above the freezing mark and driving conditions improved.  There was a sudden burst of precip in my VP2 gauge at 11:25 (details below) that I believe may be attributable to the remaining snow melting out of the gauge and into the tipping spoons, all at once.  The rain was quite light all day and I don't think a brief burst of heavy rain actually occurred from the skies above. Clouds overnight and a 20 POP for isolated showers, not much on radar right now. Highs around 50 on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies, and a 20 POP for isolated showers, mostly early. After a night in the 30s, the temps on Wednesday after a warm frontal passage should reach into the 60s with clouds increasing and a 100 POP for showers (and possibly even a thunderstorm) in the afternoon and evening with strong, gusty winds also possible. Lows in the upper 30s Wed night, dropping off after midnight. Thursday should find cooler conditions in the 40s, then 20s on Thursday night with a 30 POP for snow showers. On Friday and over the weekend we should be sunny to partly cloudy, with highs in the mid 30s mostly and lows in the low-mid 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Tuesday was a surprisingly warm day, not predicted, as the sun came out and the warm front punched through, and we soared well into the 60s. Tonight the moon is out through high clouds that are starting to stream in from the strong, active cold front coming through our area Wednesday evening and temps remain mild in the 40s. Our remaining snow and ice completely melted away today. Tomorrow should be cloudy under increasing southerly breezes with high temps well up in the 60s and a 50 POP for showers in the afternoon. Wednesday night there is a 100 POP for showers and even possible thunderstorms with lows in the upper 30s eventually. Heavy rain and strong, gusty winds are expected in parts of the area. Clearing windy and colder on Thursday with highs in the low 40s. Clouding over Thursday night, temps falling into the 20s, with a 40 POP for snow flurries/showers. Friday should clear off and cool down further into the mid 30s as we head into February. It should remain seasonably cold through the weekend. Next week should get milder once again with rain showers possible.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Wednesday was an amazing day! Cloudy, and incredibly mild without sun, as temps reached into the upper 60s once again. Just missed the record for the day of 69 set back in 2002.  Then in the mid-afternoon the heavens started to open up ahead of a slow moving strong cold front moving east into our area. Training showers aligned from the SW to the NE, but moved along that line. My 3.00" rain for the day not only smashed the old daily record for Jan 30, but it set an all-time monthly daily record easily. Rain fell most of the time between about 1500 on through obs tonight, as light rain continues into the early Thursday morning hours. About 90% of Wednesday's rainfall fell in 3 periods during the day and evening - 0.63" between 1515-1650, 0.71" between 1905-2035 and 1.36" between 2215 and 2400. There was only a slight underreporting of daily total rainfall from my VP2 gauge, which is where this "split" data comes from (2.91" vs. 3.00"). The rain on Wednesday was the rainiest calendar day since October 29 of last year when Hurricane Sandy paid us a visit.

Rainfall should continue to fall overnight, and flash flood and flood warnings are posted for our area through late on Thursday. We also had some thunderstorm and tornado watches out on Wednesday but as far as I know none occurred in my immediate vicinity. Thursday should see conditions eventually improve/dry out and cool off with a wind advisory posted and temps in the 40s. Thursday night should cloud up a bit and cool off more, with a chance of light snow or flurries late night into early Friday morning. Friday should feel like winter again, with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s. Over the weekend temperatures should moderate a bit into the upper 30s to low 40s with 20s for lows, then remaining dry and a bit milder early next week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 31, 2013

Thursday put a cap on the month of January with another crazy day. Rain continued from Wednesday early in the morning, through to about 0250, briefly intense around 0100 (see MRR details below), with mild temps and low pressure values continuing through the overnight hours. By sunrise or shortly thereafter (I was still sleeping) skies cleared and the sun started to dry things out. Winds picked up and I recorded my personal high peak wind gust for the month right after 0800 (details below). Temperatures started to drop, pressure started to rise under the clearing, drying skies. By late in the day we were around the freezing mark once again, and then below freezing by late evening. Still clear and moonlit out there now, but snow was falling in the WV mountains most of Thursday and is headed this way, and should be falling here in a few hours, perhaps at or even before sunrise. We should get a light amount, from a dusting to 1 inch is the latest forecast I have heard (70 POP). It should be over by mid to late morning, my morning commute into the office may be problematic. On Thursday morning my commute in by car wasn't too bad, but storm-related wires and trees down and flooded roadways and train right of ways made for a very problematic morning commute for many of my co-workers.  Some of the weary commuters from Thursday's ordeal may not want to go through another day of hassles and take an early start to Super Bowl weekend. Friday should be breezy and chilly with some sun for most of the day after the snow exits to the east, with high temps in the low 30s. Lows Friday night under clear skies should be around 20. Saturday clouds should return as another weak system approaches our area from the west, with more light snow showers/flurries possible Saturday evening (40 POP). Sunday should dry out but remain seasonably cold, with high temps in the upper 30s to low 40s. Next week looks a bit milder, with temps well into the 40s to perhaps 50 on Tuesday, but otherwise seasonable for the most part with lows in the 20s and low 30s.

We are having a nice snowfall in southern DE this morning.  We already have an inch and may get up to 3 inches more.  Medium to large fakes are coming straight down with no wind at all.  Roads are beginning to slush up and school busses are running.  Very pretty sight as it is one of those sticky snows coating everything and turning the trees white as the branches quickly fill up.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, February 1, 2013

Friday started out the month of February nicely with a clipper visit during the early morning hours around 0545 till around 0800 with light, fluffy snow and winds blowing it around a bit. I was sleeping while it blew through, and went in a bit late to the office to avoid travel problems during the snow. It blew through quickly and cleared by 0900, so my trip in was in sunny skies. Temps stayed below the freezing mark the entire day. Now early Saturday morning and we are in the mid teens. Snow evaporated and also blew around a bit during the sunny late morning and afternoon so we don't have a lot of snow left in many spots around the neighborhood. Saturday should start clear very early but cloud up quickly as another clipper system pays us a visit with more snow expected by afternoon through the evening, but with little accumulation (60 POP) - probably even less than what we got Friday morning. Once again we should stay below freezing all day. Lows on Saturday night should be in the 20s. Sunday there is a 50 POP for snow showers but warming up a bit into the mid-upper 30s. Partly cloudy on Monday and Tuesday, with a 40 POP for snow showers on both evenings, highs mid 30s, lows in the 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, February 2, 2013

Saturday was another cold and cloudy day, staying below freezing once again, and also having more snow falling from yet another clipper system in the afternoon. Less wind this time, and very light snowfall for the most part, probably occurring roughly from 1400 to 1800 or so. Clouds remained in the remainder of the evening and early this Sunday morning with temps staying in the mid 20s, with some fog forming in spots, causing freezing fog in those locations that will make for slippery road conditions. Nothing like that noted here at the moment in my neighborhood. Sunday should see a 50 POP for more snow showers, mostly in the morning hours, with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the 20s. Partly cloudy skies on Monday with highs in the 30s once again, lows in the 20s with a 70 POP for snow showers. Tuesday and Wednesday should see partly cloudy skies and temps in the upper 30s to lower 40s, with a 40 POP for more snow showers on Tuesday night with lows in the 20s.  Clouds and sun the rest of the week with highs mostly in the low 40s and lows in the mid-upper 20s but it should remain dry with no more snow the rest of the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, February 3, 2013

Sunday warmed up a bit, getting over the freezing mark for the first time in February. We also saw a little bit of sun, right after a very light snow flurry around 1400.              Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, February 4, 2013

Monday warmed up a bit more into the mid 30s, and the snow that was supposed to give us an inch earlier this evening fizzled out before reaching us though officially there is still a 50 POP for snow overnight. Right now it appears to be snowing over much of PA, but that snow is headed east, staying north of the Mason-Dixon line. Also precip, some mixed is over NJ, DE and the Eastern Shore, also headed east and out to sea. Temps tonight are hovering around or just below the freezing mark under cloudy skies. Sun was prevalent on Monday morning/afternoon, but with increasing high clouds in the PM hours. Tomorrow should be up around 40 and partly cloudy, there is a 40 POP for snow showers with little to no accumulation on both Tue and Wed night. A slow warmup into the 40s this week, some clouds around but we should see a fair bit of sun. Lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. No more real cold air around, and after these last little bursts of possible snow over the next day or so, we should be drying out with only minimal 30 POP for rain showers on Thursday or Friday. Over the weekend temps should be seasonably mild well up in the 40s under partly sunny skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Tuesday warmed up a bit more to around 40, with partly cloudy skies in the late morning and most of the afternoon, with some increase in clouds towards evening as yet another "clipper" system approached from the west. The mountains to our west robbed what little moisture the system had, and most all of the snow dumped west and over the mountains., in parts of WV, PA and western MD. Temps early this Wednesday morning are still above freezing in the mid 30s and should only drop to around 30 by sunrise. Wednesday should see sunny skies and high temps in the low 40s. Thursday increasing clouds with high temps around 40 after a low overnight into the upper 20s. Thursday night a mixed precipitation pattern may set up, but mostly north and west of here in any sort of significant amount, and then on Friday a 60 POP for rain with high temps in the 40s. We should clear out Friday night with lows in the 30s, then Sunny over the weekend, high around 40 on Saturday and well into the 40s on Sunday, with lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s overnight on Saturday into Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Wednesday warmed up a bit more into the mid 40s (almost), with mostly sunny skies. High clouds partially covered the skies at times. Tonight it is clear, and temps are dropping into the 20s. Thursday we should see more clouds than sun, a bit cooler due the lack of the sun's warming influence, with high temps in the upper 30s to around 40. Thursday night will be cloudy and cold, running right around the freezing mark as this big winter storm starts heading up the coast and towards our area.  Right now a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain should develop over our area initially overnight Thursday(60 POP), possibly causing a problematic morning rush hour on Friday morning.  Temperatures should warm later on Friday, late morning into the afternoon, with high temps in the 40s. Morning rain should change over to showers in the afternoon (80 POP), then end towards evening. Winds may increase a bit as the storm pulls away. The weekend should be more tranquil, with seasonable temps in the 30s on Saturday and 40s on Sunday with mostly sunny skies. Lows should be somewhere in the 20s. Next week looks milder with some rain chances (30-40 POP) early in the week, with temps in the 40s and 50s and lows mostly in the 30s. A cool down is likely towards the end of the week, but nothing major - yet!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 7, 2013

Thursday cooled down a bit due to mostly cloudy skies most of the day, after a clear, cold early morning. The storms from the midwest and south are headed our way, but will be offshore enough and not phase together till they get further NE up the coast and give New York, Boston and many points in between and beyond a snowstorm to remember.  Appropriately enough on Thursday, Dr Louis Uccellini was named as the new head of the National Weather Service, a real snow enthusiast who is coming into power just at the right time with this epic storm right on our doorstep. We have a winter weather advisory out for our county from 4 AM to 10 AM, we probably will get a mix of sleet, freezing rain, snow or sleet at the onset of the precipitation in a few hours and for a few hours - accumulations of up to an inch possible in some spots, and light ice coating from the freezing rain; probably a problematic morning rush hour so I may sleep in a bit to avoid that. Overnight we should be right around the freezing mark or just above. Friday temps should warm into the 40s with just rain most of the day. Late clearing as colder air moves in, along with increasing winds through Saturday. It should be fairly cold on Saturday with sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s. Moderating temps with decreasing winds on Sunday with highs in the 40s. Monday sees a return of clouds and a 30-40 POP for rain, possibly starting as sleet late Sunday night. The rest of the week looks fairly dry with seasonable temps, mostly in the 40s for highs and lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, February 8, 2013

Friday started out cloudy with temps just above freezing when light rain came in during the early morning hours. Almost all of today's rain fell before 9 AM. My wife noted that when she left for school just before 7 AM, she had a bit of ice buildup to scrape off from her car windows. So there was some light freezing rain - she didn't seem to notice any sort of snow or sleet accumulation however. By the time I left for work it had warmed enough that any ice accumulation that my car might have had was melted and everything was just a bit wet. The storm moved away quickly from my immediate area, and most of the day was just cloudy with temps in the mid-upper 30s to around 40 by early evening. Just prior to obs a bit the winds picked up and I got some good gusts that have kept up to the present time. Still cloudy, only just a short time ago did the temperature finally fall below freezing. Headed down into the 20s by sunrise, under blustery conditions at times and possibly a few snow flurries. Saturday should be sunny and blustery with high temps in the upper 30s. Lows Saturday night in the lower 20s with winds diminishing. Sunny and a bit milder on Sunday with high temps in the 40s and light winds. Late Sunday night there is a 30 POP for light freezing rain with low temps around the freezing mark. A 50 POP for rain on Monday with high temps in the low 40s. Sunny and milder on Tuesday with highs in the 40s, then clouds return with a 40 POP for rain or snow on Wednesday with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the upper 20s. Thereafter the rest of the week looks tranquil with milder conditions continuing, possibly hitting the 50 mark by Friday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, February 11, 2013

Monday featured clouds and overnight rain (till about 6 AM) to start, then cloudy and mild most of the day, warming up the most in the early evening with temps in the low 50s, then breezes picked up with a frontal passage in the late evening, but temps are still slow to drop off tonight. It should reach the mid 30s by morning. Sunny and mild on Tuesday with highs around 50, lows in the low 30s. Wednesday should be cloudy with high temps in the low 40s with light rain. The rain should turn to snow late in the day or in the evening, with lows in the low 30s, we may get a few inches of accumulation out of that system. Sunny and seasonable on Thursday and Friday with highs in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. The weekend looks stormy and potentially another chance at snow, perhaps more significant snow, and turning colder, with sub-freezing max temps looking to return to our area on Sunday and/or Monday. Lows should be dipping into the teens, particularly if we can get a snow cover and have some ideal radiational cooling nights with very light winds and clear skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Wednesday featured clouds and gradually colder temperatures for most of the day. The evening provided the real excitement for the day, as late afternoon rain turned over to snow in the early evening and piled up to about an inch on grassy surfaces and car tops in my immediate vicinity. For a short time the snow was really coming down in the above freezing temps, and with it being a wet snow, the flakes were really huge, some 2-3 inches in diameter! Temps actually warmed a few tenths of a degree after the snow stopped around 2200, and melted more of the snow on the surfaces where it initially had stuck and accumulated. Streets and sidewalks remained wet for the most part.  Temps have remained above freezing through the very early morning hours of Thursday, and I don't anticipate a great deal of iciness in the morning. Sun is expected to return on Thursday with high temps well into the 40s with lows in the mid 30s. Clouds increase on Friday with highs in the low 50s, then a 50 POP for rain or snow showers on Friday night as a strong front approaches our area from the west with lows in the lower 30s. Sun and cold returns over the weekend, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s. Washington's Birthday Monday should see a bit of a warmup, into the 40s for highs and still 20s for low under sunny skies.

Wednesday's precipitation: 0.23" (LR) 0.15" (VP2 - snow still in gauge and will be melting through on Thursday) 5.19" Max rain rate @ 2230 is indicating to me that a big chunk of snow must have melted through at once, providing an instantaneous rise in the "rain rate". It only lasted one minute.
Wednesday's snowfall: 0.8"
February total snowfall: 2.0"
Snow on ground: 1"

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 14, 2013

Thursday featured a return of a warming sun, melting all the snow that fell Wednesday evening save for a few very shady, north-facing spots in my front yard by the end of the day. The early morning hours did reach the freezing mark, and there were a few icy windshields around to scrape off. With the drying sun melting and drying off the snow and wetness from yesterday, tonight's return to freezing temps will not be much of a problem in the morning on our windshields especially with a mostly cloudy overnight. Friday should find partly cloudy skies with temps reaching into the 50s. Friday night rain showers should be coming in (70 POP) changing over to mixed rain/snow and then snow, with possibly 1-3 inches accumulation and lows around 30. Cloudy with snow showers in the morning (50 POP) on Saturday and highs in the 30s. Lows Saturday night under clearing skies should be well down into the 20s. Sunday shoudl see sun and cold, with high temps in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s to possibly upper teens. President's Day Monday should be sunny and milder, with temps in the 40s. Monday night should cloud over with a chance of freezing rain with lows in the 30s. Rain showers (50 POP) on Tuesday with highs in the upper 40s, then possibly snow showers Tuesday night with lows in the 20s. Sunny and cold on Wednesday with highs around 40.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 21, 2013

Thursday was mostly sunny, still breezy at times, and chilly, with temps only reaching the upper 30s after a frosty morning down into the low 20s. This evening the temps have dropped into the 20s once again, but the dew point is creeping up slowly and we won't get down much lower than what we are at right now, with increasing clouds coming in from our next storm system approaching from the SW. Sleet/snow/freezing rain expected on Friday, light amounts as the storm is weakening as it heads east (60 POP). It will strengthen after it passes us by and re-energizes off the coast in the Atlantic and give Boston and much of New England more snow over the weekend. We should stay pretty chilly on Friday, with highs in the low 30s, then maintaining that temp overnight with more freezing rain and rain heading into Saturday (80 POP). More rain on Saturday after early freezing precip types (PL,ZR mostly) with highs up in the 40s. Finally clearing out late Saturday night, then sunny and seasonable on Sunday and Monday with highs in the low to mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Late Monday into Tuesday we have our next chance at a storm, with potentially another round of mixed precipitation (60 POP) and highs in the 30s and 40s and lows around 30.
