Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, February 23, 2013

Saturday was mostly cloudy but with some sun breaking through the lifting/lightening cloud base in the afternoon, milder with high temps in the mid 40s. Occasional light rain fell sporadically through the morning and early afternoon hours. Tonight it is cloudy and with the air temp falling through the 40s and also approaching closely to the dew point temp, which with a stable atmosphere,  is causing fog to form.  Clouds may remain through most of the morning but eventually clearing will take over and we should have at least a sunny afternoon with highs in the upper 40s. Clear with lows in the upper 20s on Sunday night, then sunny on Monday with highs in the mid 40s. Clouding up a bit on Monday night with lows in the 30s, then a 70 POP for rain on Tuesday and Tuesday night, with highs in the 40s and lows in the mid-upper 30s. Wednesday should be sunny with highs in the low 50s. More unsettled weather is expected Wednesday night and Thursday with seasonable temps - no cold waves or big storms on the horizon as we rapidly wind down our shortest month of the year.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, February 25, 2013

Monday was back to work day, sunny, frosty in the early AM, mild in the PM, cooling off under moonlit skies back into the 20s this evening/early Tue morning ahead of our big change later on Tuesday when we are expecting a significant rainstorm to hit, on the warm side of the Great Plains blizzard moving west of our area. A flood watch is out through much of Tuesday, hard to believe right now with the moonlit skies and temps in the 20s right now. Rain should be moderate to heavy at times, with a slight chance for thunderstorms on Tuesday evening. Showers ending Wed morning, then partial sun with highs in the 50s. A 40 POP for showers on Thursday with highs in the 40s, then clouds/sun alternating through the weekend with temps mostly in the 40s cooling off into the upper 30s over the weekend, lows in the 20s and 30s. Tuesday's rain should be our most significant rain of the month, probably will double our total monthly rainfall over the next few days.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Tuesday's first few hours were clear and cold, with temps in the upper 20s. But clouds moved in quickly overnight after I went to bed, and I awoke mid-morning today to a cloud deck that had a very milky sun trying to show through it as I was leaving for the office. Clouds thickened further as the rain shield moved in from the south and west. Rain started mid-day occasionally, but never really got going to generate any flooding that I know of. Temps warmed through the 30s and this evening by obs was in the low 40s. Very light rain/spotty drizzle has continued sporadically early this morning, but should be out of here by sunrise or at the latest mid-morning. Temps will remain mild in the 40s overnight, and on Wednesday under partly cloudy skies should soar well into th 50s with no more rain by afternoon. Cloudy Wed night and mild with temps in the upper 30s. Thursday night should be cloudy with a 30 POP for showers and cooler, with highs in the upper 40s. Gradually cooler from then through the weekend, with some clouds at times and some sun, temps in the 40s through Saturday, then highs in the upper 30s on Sunday. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 28, 2013

Thursday started out mild and cloudy, with a few scattered very light showers during the overnight hours. Mostly cloudy during the day with little sun, continuing tonight with a 20 POP for showers through Friday evening, possibly a snow flurry in there in some colder locations in the area. The weekend looks partly to mostly cloudy with below normal temps in the 40-45 range for highs and lows mostly holding in the 30s due to the cloudiness. No real rain chances after Friday through the weekend and into the early part of next week. Around mid-week models are trying to form a storm that could be a snow producer possibly, but latest runs are tending to track it south of our area into the Carolinas. But that could easily change, Wednesday is almost still a week away. It will remain below normal for the first part of the new month of March.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, March 1, 2013

Friday was mostly cloudy and chilly, as we start on March our normal high temp now is about 50 and I only made it into the low 40s for highs today. There were some scattered sprinkles/flurries in the area, but I didn't receive anything measurable, and didn't observe any precipitation in any form at my home location while I was here. Temps Friday evening have been dropping through the 30s, and have finally reached the freezing mark right now at about 4 AM. Saturday should be quite similar to Friday, mostly cloudy and chilly with scattered sprinkles/flurries and highs in the low 40s.  Blustery at times today and tomorrow. It should remain cloudy but starting to dry out Saturday night, with Partly cloudy skies on Sunday and high temps around 40. Lows Sunday night into the upper 20s (about normal for this time of year). Monday and Tuesday should be partly to mostly sunny with highs in the low 40s and lows in the upper 20s to around 30. Tuesday night into Wednesday right now is uncertain, with a 40-50 POP for snow at night on Tue and Wed and snow or rain during the day on Wednesday - lows in the low 30s, highs in the mid 30s to low 40s, depending. Exact track of the storm might be just south of our area, but a minor shift/a minor error in the plotting of the track could make a big difference on how much precip/how much snow we get. The rest of the week looks partly to mostly sunny and warming up a bit into the upper 40s by Friday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, March 2, 2013

Saturday was once again mostly cloudy and chilly like Friday, but even chillier.  Snow flurries were in the area, but I didn't observe any at my station, and my gauge was dry.  Temperatures held in the mid 30s with wind chills in the 20s most of the day. We did see a bit of sun mid-day but clouds came back later on in the afternoon and evening. Some clearing noted at times later on. We have reached the upper 20s early this Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon should still see more clouds than sun, but the flurry "threat" should be diminishing and we should remain generally dry in the local area with highs in the low 40s and lows in the mid-upper 20s. Monday and Tuesday should see partly cloudy skies with highs in the low 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Tuesday evening snow or rain should develop at a 70 POP, continuing into Wednesday with highs in the mid-upper 30s. A 30 POP for snow showers on Wednesday evening but clearing out eventually, with lows in the upper 20s to around 30. Thursday should be sunny and dry, with highs in the low-mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Friday and Saturday should remain mostly sunny, with highs warming into the low 50s by the weekend. Low temps mostly should be in the upper 20s on Thursday evening rising to around 30 or the lower 30s by the weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday,March 3 2013

Sunday was a tad milder than Saturday, and a tad sunnier, but basically was pretty much the same, partly cloudy, chilly, breezy at times, with scattered snow flurries in the area, but not observed at my station. Lows are running around 30 tonight after highs reached just over 40 on Sunday afternoon. Monday should be sunny and seasonably cold, with highs in the low 40. Monday night should be clear and cold, with lows in the mid 20s. Tuesday should be mostly sunny for most of the day, with high temps in the low 40s once again. Tuesday night and Wednesday looks more and more interesting as a upper midwest burst of energy is taking a beeline for our area during the midweek period. Models seem to change with every model run, we are right around the snow/rain line. We might get up to 6-10 inches of snow, and then again we might get mostly rain, with high temps in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. It looks to clear off quickly by Thursday, with a slow warmup through the 40s to around a high of 50 on Saturday, with lows mostly in the 30s. Stay tuned for further updates on this budding snowstorm for midweek!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, March 4, 2013

Monday was a tad milder than Sunday in the afternoon, though actually a bit chillier further down in the 20s in the early morning hours due to really clear skies and low dew points in the teens. Definitely sunny, and with high clouds starting to stream in by sunset, we had a very pretty sunset on Monday. Temps should once again reach down into the 20s by Tuesday sunrise. Sun will be shining through high clouds in the daylight morning hours but by afternoon more clouds than sun with high temps in the 40s one more day. Light rain or a light mix of rain/snow should start coming in by evening, with temps lowering into the 30s. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday the thoughts I heard most of Monday was that the precip would become all snow, and snow moderate to heavy for most of Wednesday with high temps in the low-mid 30s. The snow will be quite wet. Mixture with rain or sleet is not out of the question. Timing of the end is not sure, whether it will end sometime on Wednesday evening or possibly early Thursday morning. Total accumulations will be varying greatly in the DC area, but in my immediate area right now I think we will get between 8 and 10 inches. More than a foot is possible just a few miles to my west and north, and just a slight shift in the track could give us over a foot here too- and also could result in less than 5 inches too. We should have better ideas on amounts this time tomorrow. Clearing out by Thursday afternoon with temps getting into the upper 30s,around 40 on Friday with sun, and in the mid 40s on Saturday and lower 50s on Sunday with sun should be melting the snow pretty rapidly, helped out also by the stronger suns rays of March. Lows should be in the 20s esp. if we get clear and the winds, which should howl pretty well at times during the storm, calm down significantly.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Tuesday was a day of anticipation of the snowstorm that has started at my location. Sunny in the am, increasing clouds in the PM, then just before obs time the temp started to go down and the dew pt started to go up, and at obs tonight I had just started with a light mix over the last half hour of the day that only amounted to a trace. Got more than a trace out there now, with about 1/2 inch accumulating on favorable locations for piling snow up. Snow should continue to fall through the night and all day tomorrow. Predictions for my county are for amounts of 6-10 inches, but that is still subject to change. I am not going into work tomorrow, I will either take the day off or perhaps we may even get the day off with an official snow shutdown. Winter storm warnings are posted for our area from midnight to 3 AM on Thursday. Temps should remain in the low 30s during the storm, right around the freezing mark. Sunny and gradually milder weather should follow the storm on Thursday and into the weekend. Thursday's highs should be in the upper 30s, rising into the 50s by the weekend. Lows in the 20s on Thursday should rise into the 30s by the weekend. Much more to tell about the snowstorm tomorrow and in possible updates during the day on Wednesday, as long as we don't lose power. Right now the winds are quite light, but the wet snow is certainly going to be quite a load on wires, tree branches and other structures that may be putting quite a strain on the power grid in our region.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Wednesday was supposed to be the big snowstorm day but the forecasted snow didn't quite materialize as predicted and we got less than expected.  Snow commenced right around midnight obs as reported yesterday, first as a mix but quickly became all snow by 1 AM. Snow kept up all night as far as I know, and during the daylight morning hours as I was sleeping mostly, when I was awake all I remember is seeing these really huge flakes of snow falling and the roof of the house across the street being all white. But depressingly enough by the time I got up and going in the early afternoon the snow had stopped initially, then light rain took over and fell most of the afternoon. Temperature rose from 33 during much of the overnight to 36-37 by late morning/early afternoon and held at those values ever since. The small snowpack shrunk with the light afternoon rain and continued to lessen in the evening, though the precipitation had stopped. Winds were quite strong mid-day, and the snow that had accumulated in the early morning hours on tree branches were easily blown off. I never did see the snow stick to the roads, and barely stuck to the sidewalks, mostly accumulating on car tops and grassy areas.  Clouds have decreased slowly through the evening, but the temperature has remained well above freezing. Tomorrow should turn sunny, with highs around 40, so much of the remaining snow should melt off. Lows Thursday night should be in the 20s one more time, then warm up on Friday to near 50 under continued sunny skies and light winds, then highs in the 50s over the weekend, remaining sunny. Showers may fall early in the week, but temps will rise to around 60 on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday's precipitation: 1.02" (LR and VP2) 7.78" Max rain rate @ 1243 but strong suspicions that was a "mini-dump" of snowmelt liquid all at once.
Wednesday's snowfall: 3.2" (estimated as of now - only could find 1.5" accumulations in the backyard in a few locations by mid-afternoon but we had had a few hours of mid 30s temps and light rain, both of which compacted/melted the snow.)
Snow on ground at obs: 1" (average of backyard and immediate surrounding area)
Seasonal snow/sleet: 11.1"
Annual YTD precipitation total: 8.02"

Data for Wednesday as follows:
High temp  38.6° VP2 (0000)(38.7° RS)
Low temp   33.3° VP2 (0237)(33.6° RS)
Obs temp   35.5° VP2 35.6°(RS)
Peak wind gust 30 N (1406)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 95% (0615) to a low of 73% (0000)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 36° to 31°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 30.03"(2337) to 29.65"(0709)
At midnight obs the temp was 35.5° (VP2)/35.6° (RS), PCloudy, Winds 4 NW, Pressure at 30.02" and rising, humidity 87%, dew pt of 32°.

Currently at 0247 EST, the temp is 35.4° (VP2), 35.6° (RS), PCloudy, Winds 4 NW, Pressure at 30.04"and rising, humidity 83% ,dew pt 31°.

Currently radar shows our "snowstorm" from most of Wednesday continuing to move NE out in the North Atlantic, still spreading precipitation offshore of the DE coast, parts of NJ and NY and the southern New England areas at this time.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, March 7, 2013

Thursday was the postmortem day, the day when everyone tried to explain why we didn't get as much snow as forecasted. Actually some places in western Virginia did get a lot of snow (18-24") that was accurately forecasted. The temps were just slightly warmer than expected, and the snow melted a lot as it fell in the immediate DC area. Thursday the sun came out and melted most of the snow that we did get, as the strong March sun and temps up near 50 did a number on the snow left from the storm on Wednesday. We should be partly to mostly sunny on Friday and through the weekend, with highs on Friday in the upper 40s and over the weekend in the 50s, with lows generally in the 30s. Monday we should reach the 60s for highs and 40s for lows with clouds and a chance of showers. Somewhat cooler on Tuesday and Wednesday with temps back down in the 50s with lows in the 30s.

Thursday's precipitation: 0 (LR) 0.14" (VP2 from snowmelt finally falling through the gauge)

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, March 8, 2013

Friday had a bit of a surprise start - my wife reported snow falling on her way to teaching school in Germantown - around 0645-0700 - unfortunately I didn't see this myself as I was sleeping till about 0800 - and I didn't see it on the ground at all though it was cloudy. My VP2 showed a temp at that time of the snow of 36. So it was definitely no more than a trace amount. Clouds stayed around quite a bit during the day with really windy conditions around noon when I had my peak gust for the day. It was warm enough today to completely wipe out my paltry snow pack in my front yard unfortunately.  Tonight it is clear and temps should bottom out around 30 by sunrise Saturday. Saturday and Sunday should be mostly dry and sunny, with high temps well up in the 50s.  Monday should also be well up in the 50s, with clouds more than sun, and an 80 POP for showers after 2000 EST Monday evening. Tuesday should see a 50 POP for continued showers with highs in the low 50s. Clearing off on Wednesday with seasonable temperatures.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, March 9, 2013

Saturday was a clear, sunny day with a chilly, frosty start but much milder afternoon as temps headed over the 60 mark for the first time this month.  With the dry air over us right now and very light winds the past several hours, the temperature has dropped off nicely through the 40s and 30s this evening and is now below the freezing mark once again.  Times in this Saturday email are referenced to standard time except where noted as EDT for Eastern Daylight time, which is reflected in all times after 0200 today (Sunday).       Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, March 10, 2013

Sunday was another clear, sunny day with yet another chilly, frosty start and a big afternoon warmup, much like yesterday with another big diurnal range spread in the low and high temperatures for the day, something typical for springtime with these conditions.  Tonight the temperatures are not as cool (probably only reaching about 40 by sunrise Monday), and dew points have been rising through the 20s and 30s foretelling changes in our weekend pattern as we begin the new week. It should still be quite mild on Monday with highs around 60 with increasing southerly breezes, but clouds will be on the increase and showers should start breaking out in the evening (90 POP) with lows only around 50. Tuesday should see mostly morning showers (100 POP) with highs in the 50s with gradual clearing Tuesday evening under brisk NW winds behind the frontal passage. The rest of the week should be dry and cooler, with highs in the 50s on Wednesday but dropping into the 40s by Friday, with lows in the 30-35 range.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, March 11, 2013

Monday was mostly cloudy and noticeably warmer overnight both last night and tonight. Temps stayed in the 50s during the day, with a little bit of sun at times, but clouds predominated. Rain showers are in the area but I have not received any measurable amounts yet, but by sunrise and the daylight part of the morning we should have some showers falling here. A 50 POP overnight turns into a 100 POP on Tuesday morning.  Clearing will be slow, and a continued risk of showers will be found on Wednesday (40 POP) with highs in the upper 40s and lows in t.6e weekend, with even a slight chance for a bit of snow on Sunday - nothing really significant I don't think at this point.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, March 17, 2013

Sunday was cloudy and threatening for rain showing up on the radar most of the afternoon and evening, but falling elsewhere, or aloft and not reaching the ground. Eventually overnight we should start to see snow, with a winter weather advisory out for our county for 1-3 inches of snow by mid-late morning, when sleet should mix in, then rain mixing in in the afternoon, then all rain by evening. Temps barely reached 40 on Sunday and should probably stay in the 30s on Monday, after remaining in the 30s overnight Sunday, and staying above the freezing mark. Dew points remain in the mid 20s, which should result in some evaporative cooling if the snow ever does reach the ground. 90 POP on Monday, 100 POP Monday night, then a 40 POP on Tuesday for some left-over morning showers.  We should clear out and dry out after that, with high temps in the 40s through the week and lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, March 18, 2013

Monday was cloudy and cold, but the predicted snow for the most part went elsewhere. I had a trace accumulation on my car as I left for the office in the morning, and received no more snow to speak of (though it was snowing when I left for the office around 0900 - but it was really light). Rain came in during the late afternoon and evening, with temps having risen into the mid 30s (from the morning's low 30s). Rain stopped well before obs tonight as it headed off to the E and NE . now it is just cloudy with temps still in the mid 30s. Overnight officially there is still a 90 POP for rain but I don't see much on radar, just a small area well down in southern WV headed this way, but it looks like it may break up over the mountains before it would get here. There is a 70 POP for rain on Tuesday morning, then sunny on Tuesday afternoon with highs in the mid 50s. Lows Tuesday night should drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s. Thereafter the rest of the week should be sunny and cool, remaining below normal for the foreseeable future. Highs on Friday may only reach around 40. 40s look to be the normal through the weekend, with lows in the 20s and 30s. No rain in sight till possibly the end of the weekend/next Monday from some possible coastal development.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Tuesday was cloudy, a bit foggy and cold through mid-morning, then cleared off and with warming, drying westerly component winds our temperatures soared into the upper 50s.  The dew point really dropped, reaching  a really low 9° early this evening before bouncing back up a bit since then.  Temperatures have dropped off again this evening in the dry air, back into the 30s.  Cold temperatures for this time of year appear to be staying around the region well into next week. Too bad we could not have had this pattern in mid-January!  Sunny on Wednesday with highs in the upper 40s, then clouding up Wednesday night with a 30 POP for snow showers overnight into early Thursday morning, with little to no accumulation. Temps in the 30s overnight then staying in the upper 30s and windy on Thursday, with some clearing in the afternoon. From Thursday night through the weekend sunny to partly cloudy conditions look to dominate along with the continued below normal temperatures, with highs in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s to low 30s for the most part. Another chance (50 POP as it stands right now) for rain or snow on Monday, with highs in the 40s once again, then still unsettled through Wednesday as a coastal storm may or may not influence our weather at that time.

Thursday started out cloudy and blustery. Sometime during the very early morning/overnight hours I had a snow shower that dusted my car (and the other cars in the parking area of my complex) but did not stick to the roads or sidewalks. My daytime max temp was only 36.2 and temps have been dropping into the 20s late this evening - we should reach the low 20s by sunrise. Winds should lessen (they already have somewhat) on Friday with more full sun the high temperature should moderate into the mid 40s, still about 10° below normal for this time of year. Clear, cold conditions should return Friday night as we once again visit the 20s for lows. Saturday should moderate a bit more under sunny skies into the upper 40s.  Skies should cloud up on Sunday with highs in the low 40s and a 50 POP for rain. Sunday night into Monday temps should hold in the 30s overnight and low 40s by day with a mixture of rain and snow falling.     Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, March 22, 2013

Friday started out cold and frosty, a modest 26.8 low for the day but that actually is my lowest reading for March (so far). Under sunny skies and a bit less wind, temps climbed into the mid 40s (Still below normal for this cold month of March). Tonight under clear skies and calm winds the temp is once again dropping through the 30s and into the 20s. We look to get even lower by sunrise than my Friday AM min. Sunny with high temps in the low 50s on Saturday. Sunday should turn cloudy with a 40 POP for showers, cooler with highs in the mid 40s. Sunday night a near 100 POP for rain/snow mix with lows in the low 30s. Monday continued cloudy with rain or snow and highs in the upper 30s (80 POP). 50 POP for continued rain showers on Monday night with lows in the 30s. Tuesday a continued but diminishing 30 POP for showers with highs in the 40s. By Wednesday we should clear out, but remain chilly with highs in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
